Hoops Arkansas’ win over Little Rock a tale of two halves

FAYETTEVILLE — The No. 20 Arkansas Razorbacks (4-1, 0-0 SEC) allowed a large advantage at halftime to dwindle to just seven points before they pulled away to beat the Little Rock Trojans (3-3, 0-0 OVC) 79-67 on Friday night at Bud Walton Arena.

The Razorbacks started the game fast and strong both offensively and defensively, and used five turnovers to jump out to an 11-0 lead that would later extend to 39-19 with just under three minutes before the half and 42-24 before the two teams went to the locker rooms.

But in the second half, sloppy play evidenced by 12 Arkansas turnovers allowed the Trojans to make several dents in that lead and make the game much more difficult for the Hogs than expected.

"Thank goodness it’s November, and again, you have a chance to put somebody away, and you mess around," Arkansas head coach John Calipari said postgame. "So at half, instead of being up bigger and bigger, we’re up 18. So the first five minutes of the half set the tone for the rest of the game. First play, what did we do? We gave them a layup under the basket."

In the first half, it seemed as though Arkansas was in for an easy night. Freshman guard Boogie Fland didn't miss any of his five shots and had five assists and two rebounds. Forward Adou Thiero was also perfect on his three attempts and had three steals and a block to his name.

"They’ve got a good team," Little Rock head coach Darrell Walker said postgame. "Do they have more talent than us? Absolutely. But I knew we could compete better. That first five or six minutes of the game we were a deer in headlights. We were terrified for no reason."

But when the teams came out of the locker rooms for the final 20 minutes, Arkansas looked like a different team. Fland was 1-for-6, that lone make a three-pointer that essentially thwarted a final comeback attempt by the Trojans. The Razorbacks turned the ball over 12 times and the Trojans took advantage with 14 points off those turnovers.

Thiero still looked good, as he scored 16 points, but he was also responsible for four of those 12 turnovers. He said fatigue and undisciplined play, driven in part by a lack of depth, played a role in the Hogs' second-half struggles.

"That plays a part in it, but at the same time — I’m not trying to use this as an excuse — but we got like seven people who play right now," Thiero said. "We’re waiting on our two bigs to come back. I know me myself, I’ll be a little tired out there, still trying to push through, but we’ve just got to keep grinding. We’ll figure it out."

Thiero also said even though the Hogs got out with a win, there are things to take from the game and continue to grow.

"I think it's like an eye opener for us — not really eye opener — but just us being able to see how much we're developing, coming together as a team, our team chemistry being built," Thiero said. "I don't think there's bad wins or anything, but you can always take something from a win or a loss, and I feel like we were just going to keep learning and keep growing together as a team."

The Razorbacks' next chance to show that growth will come on Monday as Arkansas hosts Maryland-Eastern Shore. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will stream only on SEC Network-Plus.

Losing turnover battle again costly for Arkansas

Each one of the five losses for Arkansas (5-5, 3-4 SEC) this season featured critical turnovers that the team could not overcome.

The Razorbacks, who lost 20-10 to Texas on Saturday, are now 0-5 on the season in games in which they lose the turnover battle to their opponent.

Saturday's home loss to the third-ranked Longhorns, which was the third-straight loss at home for Arkansas, featured two costly turnovers for the Hogs' offense and none for the Texas offense. A strong performance from the defense, which held the Longhorns to 315 yards of total offense and 4.3 yards per play, makes the close loss even tougher to swallow.

"Obviously we lost the turnover battle 2-0 and ended up losing by 10, so that had something to do with it," head coach Sam Pittman said postgame. "But I was proud of the improvement that we made defensively, and we've got work to do offensively, but it certainly wasn't an effort problem.

"I thought we went out there and played extremely hard. To beat the third-ranked team in the country, you certainly can't turn the ball over or you've got to get them. It was 2-0 and that's what happened, but congratulations to Texas. Sark does a great job over there and they've got a really good football team."

The first turnover came in the first quarter when quarterback Taylen Green tried to thread the needle and hit receiver Tyrone Broden in tight coverage, but the ball hit off Broden's hands and Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron picked the pass off.

"Obviously we had the one pick, but that wasn’t his fault," Pittman said. "That was a dart on the line. I mean, that was a great throw."

After that play, the Longhorns drove 61 yards on six plays to punch in a touchdown on a busted coverage by the Arkansas secondary to take a 7-0 lead early on.

"That just speaks to the season and when we win the turnover battle or even, we win," Green said of turnovers. "It’s really a big emphasis on that but even if we turn the ball over, we have to do a better job responding. Whether that’s on the sideline or next play mentality, that’s something that we can do better for next week."

Arkansas again turned the ball over on its final offensive possession of the game. With the ball in Texas territory, Green hit freshman receiver CJ Brown for a completion and Brown then had the ball punched out and recovered by Texas. It was rather surprising to see Brown in the game with the team driving down 20-10 in the fourth quarter, as he had logged just 41 offensive snaps all year prior to Saturday.

"We believe in CJ," Pittman said. "If they're out there, we believe in him. We knew the ball was specifically going to go to him. We've ran it in practice and we believe in him. Just unfortunately it happened. And unfortunately the ball went to the hash and stayed inbounds, where their ball went out of bounds. But no, we believe in him. If he's out there, we certainly believe in him. Just unfortunate he fumbled."

The Razorbacks never got the ball back after that, as Texas was able to milk the clock and run the rest of the time down.

"So if, and’s and buts, we got to hang on to the football, and if we do we’ve got a pretty good team," Pittman said. "I think we showed it out here today. But that’s kind of been the story of all our losses and all our wins, you know depending on what we do with turnovers. Even today it was ugly but then it looked good and it was ugly then it looked good, if we hang on to the ball I don’t think it’s a 20 to 10 game, I don’t know if we but we sure as hell would’ve had a much better opportunity."

Winning the turnover battle is clearly key for Arkansas, as the Hogs have proven they can't overcome mistakes.

"I was proud of how hard our team played," Pittman said. "Just the two turnovers really kind of made the difference. Our defense didn't allow them to do a whole lot today either. The disappointing thing was the last drive when we were down three and then the very last drive, that we couldn't get the ball back. Other than that, I thought the kids played extremely hard. Especially the defense showed a lot of improvement."

Up next, Arkansas will host Louisiana Tech next weekend at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville. The game will kickoff at 3 p.m. CT and it will be streamed on SEC Network+.

BREAKING: Devo Davis to enter portal

STORY: https://arkansas.rivals.com/news/arkansas-guard-davonte-davis-to-enter-transfer-portal

Arkansas guard Davonte "Devo" Davis is expected to enter the transfer potal, according to a report from 24/7 High School Hoops. Davis is the fourth Razorback to enter the transfer portal so far, as he joins Keyon Menifield Jr., Joseph Pinion and Denijay Harris.

A native of Jacksonville, Arkansas, Davis was a beloved player for his home-state program, setting records and helping restore the program to levels of success it had not seen in decades.

The tenacious defender appeared in 132 games over four seasons, tied for fifth all-time with Pat Bradley, Steven Hill and Ky Madden. Davis also amassed 3,720 minutes played (4th), 1,118 points (31st), and 314 assists (9th). He was also just the 9th Razorback to reach 900+ points, 400+ rebounds, 200+ assists & 100+ steals in his Arkansas career.

While Davis was in Fayetteville, the Razorbacks went to back-to-back Elite Eights and a Sweet Sixteen in three consecutive years. As a freshman, Davis was called upon to make big-time plays to keep Arkansas' postseason alive, hitting key shots against Oral Roberts and Texas Tech, while also defending Red Raider guard Mac McClung.

His role changed each year, but Davis bought in each time as he played off ball, on-ball and was a primary and secondary scorer when needed. He wore his emotions on his sleeve and garnered the admiration of the fanbase.

Davis's success was not limited to the basketball court. He was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll three times and was on the Arkansas Athletics Department's Honor Roll four times.

Despite being a senior and playing four years in college, Davis has a year of eligibility left due to the COVID pandemic in 2020. Keep track of all of the Arkansas roster updates and portal contacts here.

More information about Davis can be found on his Arkansas roster player page.
