Hoops Hoop Hogs need toughness on glass against Oklahoma

Login to view embedded media The Razorbacks (12-7, 1-5 SEC) got their first conference win Wednesday against Georgia because of their relentless effort on the boards and their toughness, and they'll need to do it again when they face the Oklahoma Sooners (14-4, 1-4 SEC) on Saturday at Bud Walton Arena.

Arkansas finished the game versus Georgia +10 in the rebounding department, and it was the first time in Southeastern Conference play that the Hogs out-rebounded their opponent.

Assistant coach Chuck Martin met with the media Friday to preview Oklahoma and he said the win over Georgia showed how tough the team is.

"It’s a war every night, so for us to out-rebound them...rebounding is an indicator of toughness," Martin said. "If we can out-rebound Georgia in an SEC game the way we did the other night, it’s an indication that we have toughness."

The Hogs finished with 40 rebounds against Georgia, with 18 coming on the offensive end, a season-high. Martin said freshman wing Karter Knox, who finished with six rebounds and went to the free throw line 13 times, was especially impressive.

"We asked Karter and the other bigs, 'Hey, you’ve gotta commit to going to the glass and really try to put effort into this,'" Martin said. "I give Karter a lot of credit, and (Trevon Brazile), all our bigs, all of those guys, but I mention Karter because he’s the youngest of the group and for him to go rebound the ball in the manner he did and the moments he did, it’s great to see his development in real time."

Oklahoma presents less of a threat on the glass than any of the other teams the Hogs have faced this season. The Sooners rank dead last in the SEC in total rebounds at 32.8 per game and are dead last in both offensive (8.9) and defensive (23.9) boards per game. The Hogs, on the other hand, are ranked 10th in total rebounds, 13th in offensive rebounds and sixth for defensive rebounds.

Arkansas and Oklahoma have a common opponent in Georgia, which the Sooners faced on Jan. 11. The Bulldogs won 72-62, out-rebounded the Sooners 41-33 and had 16 second-chance points. Oklahoma had 10 offensive boards and only mustered six second-chance points in the contest.

Along with Knox, Arkansas has a plethora of players who are getting a taste of the SEC for the first time. Martin said there's a slight learning curve for those guys, and it appears they're coming around.

"For our young guys and our new guys who have never played in this league, it takes some time to get accustomed to the athleticism, the size, the physicality," Martin said. "I think we saw that the other night that they’re starting to make that adjustment."

It can't just be a one-off performance for this group on the glass, though. The Razorbacks have a ton of work cut out for them if they hope to play themselves back into the NCAA Tournament picture, and that starts with a matchup against the Sooners on Saturday.

"(Oklahoma is) a good team, they had some good wins early in the year," Martin said. "I think they beat Arizona early on in the year, I think Georgia Tech they beat early on in the year...so they’re a really good team. This is just an unbelievable league.

"They want to push the ball and get up and down in transition. Their guard play is really, really good. You know they’re going to come in here and be super, super physical, play really, really hard. So it’s an SEC game."

Saturday's game between the Razorbacks and Sooners will tip off from Bud Walton Arena at 7:30 p.m. CT and it will air on ESPN2.

Hoops How Arkansas basketball’s stats stack up to SEC peers

The Arkansas Razorbacks (12-7, 1-5 SEC) have struggled since league play began, but they eased some of the pressure on Wednesday night with a win over Georgia.

The SEC is a gauntlet this season, as five of the top 10 spots in the latest AP Top 25 Poll are Arkansas' conference peers. There are nine total SEC teams in the Top 25, all of which the Razorbacks have either played or will play this season.

Arkansas stumbled out the gate when SEC play started, with losses to Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida, LSU and Missouri. The Hogs were largely uncompetitive in most of those games; the average margin of defeat was 12.2 points and the closest Arkansas came to a win was a 78-74 loss to LSU.

While they're not the worst team in the SEC anymore record-wise, the Razorbacks still face an uphill battle if they want to re-enter the NCAA Tournament picture and play themselves back onto the bubble.

That task gets even more difficult with the loss of freshman point guard Boogie Fland, who underwent successful surgery on his hand and there is "no timetable for his return," according to a release from the school.

With that said, HawgBeat is taking a look at both team and individual stats that Arkansas has this season and how they stack up to the rest of the SEC...

Team Stats

Overall Stats and Conference Rank
StatNumber/PercentageConf. Rank
Field Goal %46.8%8th
3-Point %32.5%14th
Free Throw %72.2%9th
Points76.9 per game13th
Offensive Reb.10.1 per game13th
Defensive Reb.26.2 per game6th (tied with Georgia)
Total Reb.36.3 per game10th
Assists14.8 per game8th
Steals7.6 per game10th
Blocks5.8 per game2nd
Turnovers Margin1.48 (11.6 committed, 13.1 forced)11th

Most of Arkansas' stats have taken a dip since conference play started, most notably in the shooting percentages and points per game. In the last six games, the Hogs haven't shot higher than 45% and they're averaging 64.7 points per game, a steep dive from the 80.4 they were scoring in the non-conference slate.

Where Arkansas improved in its win over Georgia was in the free throw department. The 34 attempts from the charity stripe were the second-most this season only to the Florida game when Arkansas shot 35, but the main difference was in how many it converted. The Hogs converted 29 of their opportunities against Georgia compared to 24 against Florida.

"Coaches told me at halftime to drive the ball and stop settling," Arkansas forward Karter Knox, who attempted 13 free throws Wednesday, said. "I adapted to it really well, started driving it, got fouled. Started going for rebounds, got fouled. I’m too strong, they couldn’t hold me down there. Just going in, being aggressive."

ALSO READ: Arkansas flips script in 2 key areas against Georgia

Rebounding was also much improved on Wednesday, and that's a trend the Hogs will need to continue if they hope to make noise in the SEC. Arkansas was +10 in rebounds against Georgia, and it was the first time the Razorbacks won the rebounding battle since league play began.

"We had to take pride," Arkansas forward Adou Thiero said after the win over Georgia. "Word around the SEC, you know, we’re soft. They’re going to try to come here and punk us. Nah. We had to fix that and show we have fight in us. You’re not going to come in here and punk us around, no matter what."

Winning the rebound battle against Georgia is more significant than it looks, because the Bulldogs are one of the best on the glass in the SEC and rank eighth in total rebounds, sixth in offensive and defensive boards, and are second in opponent rebounds. They only allow their opponents to grab 31.3 boards per game and Arkansas had 40.

SEC-only stats

SEC-Only Stats and Rank
StatNumber/PercentageConf. Rank
Field Goal %36.7%14th
3-Point %23.1%14th
Free Throw %71.7%10th
Points64.714th

Defensive Reb.23.58th
Total Reb.36.36th
Assists10.314th
Steals5.8316th
Blocks 6.22nd (tied with Alabama)
Turnover Margin0.16 (10.67 committed, 10.83 forced)10th
Arkansas' stats get worse when it comes to conference-only competition, which is not unusual given the level of competition the Hogs (and most other teams in the SEC) played in the non-conference slate compared to the conference.

Still, Arkansas is one of the best in the SEC in blocked shots, tied with Alabama for second at 6.2 per game. Only Auburn ranks higher with 8.4 blocks per game.

Arkansas' rebounding numbers rank in the top half of the conference as well, though that might be attributed to the 40 (18 offensive and 22 defensive) rebounds they gathered against Georgia.

The assist numbers are bad, and they're likely going to get worse with the loss of Fland. The Hogs are 14th in the conference in assists at just 10.3 per game since league play began.

Individual Stats

Looking at the individual statistic leaders across the SEC, there's one clear-cut leader for the Hogs, and that is Thiero. Obviously, scoring hasn't been great for the Hogs recently, but Thiero has been a bright spot for Arkansas. He ranks 11th in the SEC in scoring at 16.4 points per game and is second in the SEC in field goal percentage.

Thiero's free throw percentage of 69.6% ranks 22nd in the conference, but the 21 he attempted against Illinois on Thanksgiving Day is still the most of any player in the SEC.

No other Razorback, outside of Fland, is in the Top 25 of any offensive category.

That's where the loss of Fland hurts the most. His 5.7 assists per game still ranks second in the SEC and his assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.7 still leads the SEC. He, along with guard D.J. Wagner, top the leaderboard in minutes played at 34.1 and 34, respectively. His 39.1% field goal percentage ranks 16th in the conference and his 83.9% free throw percentage is 10th in the conference.

RELATED: Thiero's double-double effort leads Arkansas past Georgia

Defensively, Thiero still stands out in SEC leaderboards. His 1.8 steals per game is 11th in the conference, and just 0.2 steals away from being ranked eighth. He's not featured on the blocks leaderboard, but there are several Hogs who are in the tops of the SEC in that category.
Zvonimir Ivisic is the highest-ranked Razorback in blocks with 1.7 per game, which ranks fourth in the SEC. Trevon Brazile's 1.5 per game is a few spots down at No. 10, and Jonas Aidoo is at No. 12 with 1.3 per game.

Brazile's six blocks he had against Oakland on Dec. 30 is still an SEC record this season, and Ivisic's five he had against Troy is tied with six other players for second.

When it comes to SEC-competition only, Arkansas representation among the best of the SEC gets slimmer. Thiero drops to 18th in the conference in scoring at 13.7 points per game and he's not in the top 12 of field goal percentage. His 1.5 blocks per game do rank No. 7 and his 1.7 steals are No. 16.

Where Arkansas transfers landed

1736707834666.png

From @masonchoate:

While the Arkansas Razorbacks have been hitting the transfer portal hard, it is partially as a result of having more than 20 scholarship players decide to enter the portal after a 6-6 regular season that was capped off with a Liberty Bowl win over Texas Tech on Dec. 27.

The transfer portal officially opened Dec. 9 and it was open for a 30 day window through Dec. 28. There is also an additional five-day window for players to enter once their season is over, plus there will be an additional 10-day portal window from April 16-25.

Two freshmen pitchers to watch for Arkansas in 2025

1736522264011.png

From @masonchoate:

Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn and his staff managed to get a few of their top high school recruits from the 2024 class to campus, including a pair of stud pitchers in Carson Wiggins and Cole Gibler.

Van Horn and pitching coach Matt Hobbs have seen freshmen arms put together big-time first seasons in recent memory, including names such as Hagen Smith, Brady Tygart and Gabe Gaeckle, to name a few.

The younger brother of former Razorback pitcher Jaxon Wiggins, Carson Wiggins was rated by MLB Pipeline as the No. 79 overall prospect for the 2024 MLB Draft.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander out of Roland, Oklahoma, was rated by Perfect Game as the top pitcher in the state of Oklahoma for the 2024 class.

"I think he’s going to be a starter eventually here," Van Horn said Oct. 4. "It could be this year. We have some good options if everybody stays healthy. With the schedule we’re playing this year in ’25, we’re going to need them all."

Wiggins appeared four times and threw 3.2 live innings in the fall, according to stats compiled by local media. He gave up five earned runs on six hits while striking out five and walking none. Wiggins pitched a perfect inning of relief with two strikeouts in the Oct. 4 Fall Classic at Baum-Walker Stadium.

"The stuff’s amazing," Van Horn said Oct. 4. "Obviously he’s 18-years-old. You don’t know how they’re going to respond out here in this atmosphere. He’s gotten hit a little bit, but his stuff’s been amazing in our scrimmages. Tonight, they didn’t hit him. Fastball is 97, 98 miles an hour. Throwing strikes. Got a good breaking ball. Looked like a guy that can help us right away tonight."

Wiggins also touched 101 mile per hour, according to TrackMan data, during the Oct. 11 exhibition win over Oklahoma State at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville. He will be a draft-eligible sophomore in 2026, as his birthday lands within 45 days of the draft.

Rated by MLB Pipeline as the No. 128 overall prospect in last year's draft, Cole Gibler hails from Blue Springs High School in Blue Springs, Missouri. Perfect Game rated Gibler as the No. 1 left-handed pitcher prospect in the state of Missouri for the 2024 class.

Gibler was arguably as successful as any Arkansas pitcher in the fall, as he gave up just two earned runs on three hits across five total appearances, four of which were starts. He pitched 7.2 total innings and tied for a team-best 14 strikeouts to go with five walks.

ALSO READ: Wehiwa Aloy looking to put things together in 2025

"Gibler’s been amazing," Van Horn said Oct. 4. "He’s been 94-95 almost all fall for us. These guys are working and lifting, I don’t know, maybe a little tired. But yeah, he’s been real reliable. I think he threw five balls in a row (today). We hadn’t seen that all fall. Then he got it back together. That was good to see. He’ll be a big part of our staff in the spring."

MLB Pipeline said Gibler has good depth on his curveball, which sits around 80 miles per hour, plus he has a "bat-missing sink" to his changeup, which will be in the mid-80s.

Perfect Game put out preseason rankings of the top-75 freshmen in college baseball, and Wiggins checked in at No. 12, while Gibler was ranked 57th.

The Razorbacks will open their season Friday, Feb. 14, against Washington State at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville.

ESPN says Sam Pittman ‘can't backslide’ in 2025

Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman is set to return in 2025 for his sixth season leading the Razorbacks after going 7-6 with a Liberty Bowl win over Texas Tech in 2024.

It's fair to say that Pittman entered the 2024 season on the hot seat, as he even addressed it at SEC Media Days in July. Arkansas athletics director Hunter Yurachek said in April 2024 that it wasn't a "make or break" year for Pittman, but improvement needed to be evident after a 4-8 record in 2023.

“I don’t know that this is a make or break year, but this is a year, definitively," Yurachek said. "We’ve got to show some improvement heading back in the direction away from four and eight, and towards seven and five, eight and four.”

While the Hogs ended up going 6-6 in the regular season, Yurachek saw enough to not make a move. Three of the team's losses were by one score (Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Missouri), plus first-year offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino fielded a top-10 total offense in the nation.

The rest of college football has also remained fairly quiet regarding head coaching changes, aside from Bill Belichick being hired by North Carolina.

Given the lack of movement, the 2025 coaching carousel is expected to be more active. On Monday, ESPN senior writer Adam Rittenberg released a tier list for way-too-early college football coaching hot seats.

The tier "Don't do that again" features names like Florida State's Mike Norvell and Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy. Next was the "We want this to work" tier with Oklahoma's Brent Venables, Auburn's Hugh Freeze and more.

Eventually you get down to the "Can't backslide" tier, which is where Pittman is listed alongside names such as Florida's Billy Napier and Virginia Tech's Brent Pry.

"Pittman was among a small group of Power 4 coaches who entered the 2024 season on the hot seat but removed themselves," Rittenberg wrote. "Arkansas recorded a signature win against Tennessee and navigated a tough schedule to go 7-6, which triggered a one-year rollover for Pittman's contract.

"Pittman is just 30-31 and 14-28 in SEC play, and might need to match or exceed his 2024 output to secure his spot for 2025. He's well liked and Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek hired him, but the school also has higher aspirations and would have a very strong candidate pool if its job came open."

It's worth noting that Pittman did NOT trigger a one-year rollover on his contract. He did, however, earn a $250,000 raise that will total $750,000 for the three remaining years on his contract. Other than that, Rittenberg didn't really say anything that Arkansas fans don't already understand.

The Razorbacks have lost 25 scholarship players to the transfer portal since the start of the 2024 season. They've replaced those losses with what is currently ranked on Rivals as the 8th best transfer class nationally, plus they are bringing in 24 commitments via their high school class that ranks 27th nationally on Rivals.

Razorbacks sign Montana State transfer tight end

1736712997247.png

Montana state junior transfer tight end Rohan Jones has signed with Arkansas, he announced Sunday.

A 6-foot-3, 235-pound native of Montreal, Quebec, in Canada, Jones caught 30 passes for 470 yards (15.7 AVG) and nine touchdowns in 2024. One of his top performances came against Idaho State on Sept. 28, when he made two grabs for 93 yards and a score.

Jones was named an honorable mention AP FCS All-American for his efforts, which included a three-catch, 19-yard, one-touchdown outing in the FCS Championship game against North Dakota State on Jan. 6.

Before his time at Montana State, Jones played two seasons with the Maine Bears (2022-23). There, he totaled 31 catches for 363 yards and seven touchdowns.

Since entering the transfer portal Wednesday, Jones has reported offers from Arkansas, Wake Forest, Houston, Louisville, UCLA, North Carolina and Kentucky.

Arkansas vs. Oakland

The Arkansas Razorbacks (10-2, 0-0 SEC) have one game remaining in the 2024 calendar year and will host the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (4-9, 1-2 Horizon) on Monday at Bud Walton Arena.

The Razorbacks are on a five-game win streak and most recently took down the North Carolina A&T Aggies 92-67 last Saturday. The team then took time off for the Christmas break and returned to practice on Dec. 26 to prepare for the final non-conference game of the season.

The Razorbacks and Golden Grizzlies have met on two separate occasions, and Arkansas has won both times. The first matchup came in 2006 and the Razorbacks took a 71-57 victory. The next meeting came in 2011, a game Arkansas won 91-68.

Oakland is led by head coach Greg Kampe, who is the longest-tenured active college basketball coach and has been with the program for 41 years. He has made four trips to the NCAA Division I Tournament in that time and also had four trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament before Oakland made the jump to Division I.

Arkansas head coach John Calipari has his own recent history with Oakland as well. The Golden Grizzlies defeated the Kentucky Wildcats — led at the time by Calipari — 80-76 in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament behind 32 points from Jack Gohlke, who hit 10 threes to win the game.

Florida Game - BWA Atmosphere

I've been critical of this team for a minute.

BUT our fans have been as about equally as bad in terms of creating a home court advantage.

There will be a light crowd for the game tomorrow. Lot of folks who planned to drive over for the game won't because of the weather.

I will be there. I'll try my best to be apart of the old fans who get on their feet for defense, call the Hogs when we can, and for the love of god let the band play more.

I don't even know what color I'm supposed to wear for the stripeout, doesn't matter.

Let's give it a try tomorrow to bring back BWAs notorious atmosphere.

Would we better off if we had just kept Mike Anderson ?

Would we better off if we had just kept Mike Anderson ?

  • LOLOLOL !

  • Whaaaaaa?????

  • Well we wouldn't be soul-crushed right now, because no one would still be following Hog Basketball.

  • No, but could we get Nolan back ?

  • Yes, he never had a losing record and is such a NICE guy.

Results are only viewable after voting.

I personally would be a lot better off, because I would have quit on Arkansas Basketball 5 years ago. I was already in a kind of in a don't give a shit mode, when we FINALLY pulled the trigger.
Then we hired The Midget, and got-dayum, I was hooked on that sweet, sweet Hog basketball high, all over again !! And then the Midget dumped us for that California sunshine and glamor!
Now I'm despondent and depressed.
I NEED A WIN, Cal ! Help a brother out !
