When Arkansas broke its losing streak on Saturday with an overtime win at Florida, there were many eyes on interim offensive coordinator Kenny Guiton.
One pair of eyes was CJ Brown, a 2024 three-star wide receiver from Bentonville who has been committed to the Razorbacks since June. Watching the game from home, Brown told HawgBeat he was pumped up for the Hogs to get the win.
"When I say I was hyped, like, that was ... coach Pittman said that wasn't the 2-6 team, that was the 0-0 team, they really proclaimed that," Brown said. "I think that Kenny (Guiton) at OC really ... that changed a lot of things. Like, they want to play for him."
Guiton was elevated to interim offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from wide receivers coach. Brown said the former Ohio State quarterback-turned play caller is as close as family, which just made him all that happier to see Guiton have success in his new role.
"I've developed a relationship with him, I mean, he's like an uncle to me." Brown said. "That's what it feels like. Like, we developed that type of relationship. So ... I'm probably as happy for him as he is for himself right now."
Brown is having a stellar season in his own regard for Bentonville as a senior. The Tigers are 7-3 and 6-1 in the 7A West, with a bye this coming weekend before facing either Cabot or Springdale Har-Ber, and a big part of that is Brown's play.
In the regular season, Brown said he's somewhere around 1,040 yards and 19 total touchdowns. Fourteen of those touchdowns have come through receptions, one rushing, one passing and three kickoff return scores.
Brown said he's just focused on being a better athlete, and he hopes a state championship is in the Tigers' future.
"I think it's gone real smooth," Brown said of his senior season. "I've just been working, trying to get better. I mean, ultimately I want to win a state championship. That's my main goal, but me doing really well this season is just a byproduct of trying to get to the state championship and win it.
The 6-foot-1, 183-pound pass catcher said making contested catches and route running at the things he's been working on most.
"Last year, I had a lot of being able to run straight by kids," Brown said. "So this year, just perfecting my route running and paying attention to detail. I think I'm one of the best after the catch."
Brown said he's planning on signing and enrolling early, and he'll be on the Arkansas campus in January to go through spring practice for the Razorbacks.
