The Arkansas Razorbacks will take the field for the 2023 college football season in 33 days when Western Carolina visits War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock on Saturday, September 2 for a 3 p.m. CT kickoff.
Here at HawgBeat, we will count down the days until head coach Sam Pittman and his team run through the “A” for the first time.
With 33 days remaining, we will take a look at a current player, former player, some interesting scores, highlights and other miscellaneous things in Razorback history tied to the number 33.
Highlights:
Current Player: #33 Dylan Hasz
A native of Bixby, Oklahoma, Hasz was a two-star prospect coming out of high school. He played on both sides of the ball and tallied 54 total tackles, two tackles for loss, 19 pass breakups and five interceptions. He also totaled eight receptions for 28 yards and a touchdown. Hasz played at safety for the Hogs during spring practices.
Dylan is not the only freshman Hasz on the team. His brother — Luke Hasz — is a tight end and former four-star prospect.
While Dylan may not play defense early, he should be given plenty of opportunity on special teams to begin his career.
Former Player: #33 Bobby Burnett
A native of Smackover, Arkansas, Burnett was a star for the Razorbacks from 1963-65. During the 1964 championship season, Burnett ran for 318 yards and eight touchdowns. His most important score was a three-yard run to lift Arkansas to a 10-7 victory over Nebraska and cap off a 11-0 season.
The 6-foot-3 running back was even better in 1965. He ran for 947 yards and 16 touchdowns, resulting in him being picked in the 10th round of the 1966 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. Burnett was the AFL Rookie of the Year and was also selected to the 1966 AFL All-Star team after combining for 1,185 rushing and receiving yards.
1976: Arkansas 33 - Utah State 16
In 1976, the Razorbacks opened the season against the Utah State Aggies in Little Rock. This was the second ever matchup between the two programs, as Arkansas beat Utah State the season prior, 31-0.
The No. 13-ranked Razorbacks beat the Aggies 33-16 behind the performances of quarterback Ron Calcagni and running back Ben Cowins.
Arkansas finished the 1976 season 5-5-1 overall before a 1977 season that saw head coach Frank Broyles lead the Razorbacks to an 11-1 overall mark.
2003: Florida 33 - Arkansas 28
Going into this game, the No. 11-ranked Razorbacks — led by head coach Houston Nutt — were sitting at 4-2 overall and the Gators were 5-3 overall.
Coming off a seven-point loss to a top-10 Auburn squad the week prior, Arkansas was looking to get its season back on track against the Gators. Down 33-7 in the fourth quarter, the Razorbacks rattled off three-straight touchdowns to bring the score back within reason, 33-28.
After what seemed to be a game-changing interception by the Arkansas defense with over a minute to go, the Razorbacks were penalized, offsetting the play. The Gators then kneeled it out and won the game.
Brandon Allen's 33 completions against Ole Miss
In 2015, Arkansas prevented Ole Miss from playing for an SEC title after it beat the Rebels 53-52 in an all-time classic.
Quarterback Brandon Allen threw 45 passes and completed 33 while collecting 442 yards and six touchdowns. The 33 completions is still a school record.
One of those 33 passes was a completion on 4th-and-25 to tight-end Hunter Henry, who decided to lateral the ball backwards, resulting in an Alex Collins' run to pick up the first down on a play that is now known as the "Henry Heave."
