News surfaced Monday evening that former Arkansas running back Alex Collins has tragically died at the age of 28.
The Baltimore Ravens, who Collins played for in 2017-18, confirmed the news with a statement via their official Twitter account.
The cause of death has not been officially reported.
“With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Alex Collins,” the statement said. “Always quick to greet everyone with a smile, he was a genuinely kind person who carried a special joy and passion wherever he went. May Alex always be remembered for the light and love he brought to so many people in his life.”
Arkansas football also released a statement regarding Collins’ passing.
“We are so saddened by the sudden and tragic passing of Alex Collins,” Arkansas football said. “He was a legendary Razorback and an even better person. His love for the Razorbacks and desire to be a Hog was undeniable. We will miss him greatly. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
In three seasons with Arkansas from 2013-15, Collins rushed for 3,703 yards and 36 touchdowns. His 2015 season was one of the best in school history as he rushed for 1,577 yards and 20 scored as a junior.
A native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Collins was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the 5th round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He spent the 2016 season with the Seahawks and eventually returned to Seattle for the 2020-21 seasons.
Collins most recently was part of the Memphis Showboats roster in the USFL.
As an NFL running back, Collins totaled 1,997 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground.
Former Arkansas teammates and others reacted to the loss of Collins on social media.
