First, I was in Plano, TX yesterday on a father / son weekend with one of my boys and we took some time to listen to the game. Needless to say, I was disappointed with the outcome of the game, and after reading the board it sounds like we played like crap (to put it nicely).
After doing some thinking on the drive home this morning, I decided to take a look at who the Hogs are within the SEC. After quickly doing the math since joining the league (23 seasons) here is who and what we are:
Annual Ave Wins = 6.6
Annual Ave Losses = 5.5
Annual Ave Conf Wins = 3.7
Annual Ave Conf Losses = 4.3
In 23 seasons, we've only won 5+ conference games in a season 6 times. In 23 seasons, we've only won 9+ total games in a season 6 times and 8+ total games in season 10 times.
Since joining the SEC, our HC coaches have included:
Danny Ford - Former National Championship coach (122-59-5)
Houston Nutt - Coached 10 seasons and also coached at Ole Miss (135-96)
Bobby Petrino - considered one of the all time best college offensive minds (92-34)
Bret Bielema - 3 time rose bowl champion coach (79-40)
Those coaches have an overall 65% winning percentage.
Regardless of who is coaching and frankly, we've had some very prestigeous coaches for the type of program we've shown to be, we are sub .500 conference wins and nearly 7 total wins annually.
Our recruiting has stayed basically the same, no matter our great years and no matter the coach.
This is who we are, and as a 44 year old fan, I've decided to step back. Will I still be a fan, sure I will, but no longer will I have any expectations for our program. Our best seasons, we'll sneak in 5/6 conference wins and 9/10 overall, but we are who we are......reality stinks!
