Four-star athlete Braylon Burnside has trimmed his list down to a few contenders, with only a handful of programs remaining in the picture as the summer heats up. The Starkville (Miss.) standout has an SEC-heavy final group.

The two in-state programs, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, both remain in the hunt, to no surprise. In addition to the two heated rivals, Arkansas, Auburn, Illinois, and Texas A&M round out the group in focus for the do-it-all playmaker.

Burnside has already used an official visit to check out the Aggies, while he has another locked in with the Razorbacks for later this month. The four-star dives into the contenders for his commitment with Rivals.com.

Mississippi State is the hometown school that Burnside is extremely familiar with. He's right down the road from the facilities, and Zach Arnett and staff are selling the versatile prospect on staying in town for the next level.

"I like Mississippi State. Me being from around here since a young guy and me staying in the hometown, I think the fans and community would love it," Burnside told Rivals.

Elsewhere in Mississippi, Ole Miss has long been a factor in Burnside's recruitment. Burnside is close with former Rebels star AJ Brown, which can't hurt Lane Kiffin's attempt in pulling the four-star out of enemy territory.

"Ole Miss has a great campus," said Burnside. "I want it to be a battle between the two Sip teams. Which one wants me more?"

Burnside took his first official visit of the summer to Texas A&M, a trip that opened his eyes. Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies made the Mississippi native feel welcomed in College Station, which stood out to him.

"Texas A&M shows love. It’s not fake love. You know it’s real when even the fans come up to you and already know who you are," Burnside said. "That’s real love."

Staying in the SEC, Auburn is a program that Burnside has long been high on. With Hugh Freeze now coaching the Tigers, they are a real threat to pull the blue chip talent out of the Magnolia State.

"Auburn has been one of my top schools since I was little," Burnside explained. "Their energy when they play the game says a lot about them."

Burnside has set an official visit to Arkansas for June 23. Sam Pittman and the Razorbacks have already hosted the four-star on campus, and they continue to push the right buttons.

"Arkansas, they are like the underdogs. They are highly slept on," Burnside said. "I think if I were to play for coach Pittman in Fayetteville, we would make them the best team in the SEC."

Finally, the one team outside of the SEC to remain in contention is Illinois. Burnside is teammates with three-star Illini quarterback commit Trey Petty, which has the Big Ten program on his mind.

"Illinois seems like they have a great team and coaching staff just by what my QB Trey Petty has told me," said Burnside. "Maybe Champaign might be the place for me, I don’t know yet."

RIVALS REACTS

Able to play either side of the ball on the next level at wide receiver or in the secondary, Braylon Burnside is a coveted target in the Mid-South region. To no surprise, the SEC leads the way with Illinois hoping to play spoiler in his recruitment.

Arkansas, Auburn, and Texas A&M have all given Burnside a lot to think about - and will continue to do so. With that said, the feeling is that this recruitment will ultimately come down to the Magnolia State rivals of the Bulldogs and the Rebels.

Both programs have been recruiting Burnside since the early stages, and the four-star is aware of everything that the two in-state schools have to offer. As of now, it's a race that is too close to call until all of his visits play out.

Rivals ranks Braylon Burnside as the No. 193 overall prospect in the 2024 Rivals250 rankings.
