Having any religious holiday be federally recognized while failing to do so with other religious holiday shows bias in our government. I'm not suggesting we ban the day. I'm also not suggesting we forbid people from celebrating a holiday that has religious or personal significance to them, however, anyone who believes in freedom of religion must also believe in freedom from religion. Sometimes we need to be reminded this season is not "owned" by any religious group contrary to what some may have been taught to believe.
It's ignorant and completely unreasonable to have one religion's holiday be recognized by our country's government; warranting a nationwide shutdown of shops and federal buildings, while disregarding all others. Christmas takes over every shop window display, every radio station, every mall, every television station with it's 'Christmas cheer' and nerve-grinding jingles. And yet still people claim there's a "War on Christmas" . As though being moderately inclusive to the MULTIPLE other holidays of the season by saying "Happy Holidays" is somehow threatening your religious freedoms.
I might also add that some in this country don't find the holiday season so pleasant and cheery. We find it a grim reminder of the religious dictatorship that we have in this country. The holiday has been almost completely bastardized by our consumer driven society doesn't mean it isn't at it's core a religious holiday. I know it's laughable to suggest that we actually have a separation of church and state in this country, despite it being one of the core principals this nation was supposedly founded on some conveniently turn the other cheek when its suggested that it be deemed unconstitutional , but wouldn't it be nice if our noses weren't rubbed in it every time a Christian holiday popped up?
Lets all remember during this holiday season that no religious organization decides on the water fountain we drink from, its ok to celebrate the holiday without needing a religious group to stand between us
HAPPY HOLIDAYS !!!
