Familial and friendly associations aside, we in part watch sports b\c we want our local team to win. We want the sports team that represents us to bring pride and honor to our area. Even as a kid, I remember how proud I was when we won a national championship in basketball. We'd go on vacations out of state and I'd wear that Hog gear with pride. I still do today although the majority of my life it's been hard to be a Hog fan. Aside from the 90's in basketball, we've been pretty mediocre to bad with a few bright spots in between. I'm not saying we should all become Yankee, Canadiens, Laker, and Steeler fans. You love your teams and that doesn't change. My life doesn't revolve around sports but it is an important part. Family, country, and being in nature are definitely higher on the totem pole

I've grown more and more apathetic towards college football despite how much I love it. It's become a sport so inequitable and slanted towards the traditional powers. Where as in the NFL you can draft your way to glory, we can't really do that at Arkansas. Our built in geographic and demographic disadvantages hinder us from winning championships. I truly don't think I'll ever see our football team win an SEC or NC. I think if we get the right coach (I don't think that Mike is that coach sadly), we can be a consistent tournament team that can make deep runs every once in a while. I'm just finding it harder and harder to care or cheer for a team that I know has no shot. I'll always be a Hog fan but in this one life I don't want to waste it on a program that has no shot in football. I can't find another team to cheer for, but I think I'm just going to stop caring.

Leagues like the NBA and especially the NFL are more equitable in your chances of winning. There are the franchises that are always good, but all it takes is good draft decisions and personnel moves and you can win it all or at least be in the playoff, in the hunt. MLB and NHL require more planning due to farm systems but can still see smaller teams win. Ultimately I'd describe it like being at the casino. You know you're not going to win most of the time but every once in awhile you want to win something. If it never pays out, why are you throwing your money away. I think in college football specifically we're sitting at a table that we have no shot at getting a payout. College sports aren't the most equitable, especially football. I said before there's still hope in basketball, but in football I don't really see it. Sorry for the Debbie downer poster, just calling it like I see it.
