Introducing a new series, the HawgBeat Recruit of the Week. Each week, we’ll take a closer look at one of the recruits in Arkansas’ upcoming class.
This week’s recruit of the week is Bentonville three-star wide receiver CJ Brown.
Name: CJ Brown
Rivals Rating: 3-Star
Class: 2024
Position: Wide Receiver
Hometown: Bentonville, Arkansas
Other notable offers: Tennessee, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt
Brown’s recruitment started in Nov. 2022 when he received an offer from Purdue, followed by Louisville. Arkansas jumped into the race with an offer after Brown took a visit during a Prospect Day on Jan. 20.
"Originally, I'm from Cleveland, but I moved here when I was young," Brown said on Jan. 27. "But I've lived here all my life. As you can assume, it means the world to me that my team that lives 20 minutes down the road from me offers me to come play at their school where I can stay close. It means a lot to me and my family.”
The Bentonville native took a few more unofficial visits to Arkansas through the spring, while picking up offers from Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt, Kansas State and others. He also took unofficial visits to TCU, Oregon, Tennessee.
In June, Brown started his official visits, making trips to Arkansas, Minnesta and Vanderbilt. He had an official visit planned to Oklahoma State on June 16 and originally had set a commitment date of June 30. He pushed that date up, however, to June 15.
That’s when, during a ceremony at Bentonville High School, he picked up the red hat and called the Hogs. Brown chose Arkansas from a Top 5 that included Tennessee, Minnesota, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma State.
The electric athlete will join Arkansas as a wide receiver. He used to play both sides of the ball at defensive back and wide receiver, but played solely on offense for his senior season.
Brown stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 180 pounds, and has the speed to make plays when he finds himself in space. So far for Bentonville this season, he’s recorded 779 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.
He has also returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. It was in the second quarter of Bentonville’s game against Har-Ber, and Titan Sports said he reached a top speed of 19.79 miles per hour.
That speed is what impresses me the most about Brown’s game. He’s consistently a guy that, if he gets just a little bit of separation from a defender, will make defenses pay.
His size also looks like it will translate well to the SEC. Brown’s frame suggests he could add another 10-15 pounds while in a college strength and conditioning program, which could also cause matchup problems for opposing defenses.
