1. Ole Miss's offense is a problem - Nikki
Ole Miss may rank dead last in total defense so far this season, giving up a whopping 723 yards and 63 points to the Alabama Crimson Tide, but their offense looks like it can keep them in any game they play this season. They didn't mess around with two quarterbacks on Saturday and it looks like they'll stick with Corral passing and Plumlee just coming in to run. Matt Corral threw 21/28 with no picks and ran for 40 yards too. They run the ball a lot with either Corral or Plumlee and Jerrion Ealy or Snoop Conner. They have the 24th best rushing offense in the country right now, averaging just below 200 yards per game. I imagine they'll pick up the 200 pretty easily versus Arkansas based on what we saw this weekend. Elijah Moore, Jonathan Mingo and Kenny Yeboah have all put up 100-yard receiving games far. By PFF grades, Ole Miss's offense ranks 5th in the SEC through three games. Their weakest point has been offensive line play. The Rebel offense has also been pretty clean so far with just one pick thrown by Corral. He ranks 3rd in the nation with a 76% completion rate. The Rebels are also 7th in the nation in 3rd down conversion percentage at 55%.
2. ..... its defense is not - Hutch
Thankfully for the Razorbacks, Ole Miss’ defense has more holes than Swiss cheese.
Through three weeks, the Rebels are giving up 51.7 points on 641.3 yards per game. Opponents are averaging 8.8 yards per play - which is nearly a first down. All of those marks are by far the worst in the country.
It seemed like Arkansas finally figured some things out against Auburn, so if it can keep that going against Ole Miss, we could be in for a wild shootout - which would be par for the course with these two teams.
What the Razorbacks can’t afford to do is get off to a slow start. Another three-and-out on the opening possession or five straight punts could put them in too big of a hole to dig out of because of how efficient Ole Miss is on offense.
3. RECEIVED VOTES - Nikki
Hutch wrote his column on Sam Pittman returning respectability to Arkansas football and what's better affirmation than the Hogs getting votes from coaches (and SIDs) in the polls. Last week was the first time they've received votes since 2016 in the USA today coaches poll. They got just vote this week despite such a harrowing performance against Auburn but as Pittman has been saying..... It's just the beginning. Since moving to Arkansas ahead of Chad Morris's first season, all I've experienced here are sad, often embarrassing losses. But not anymore!
4. Yes, Arkansas got screwed - Hutch
And not just once, either.
The officials screwed up by blowing the play dead when they did. I’m willing to give them somewhat of a pass on that, though, because I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a backward spike the way Bo Nix did Saturday. Still, it’s always best to let the players play it out and then fix it on replay.
Speaking of replay, I initially wondered if they might not award Arkansas the ball because there wasn’t an “immediate” recovery. The officials are blowing their whistles and waving their arms to signal the end of the play long before Joe Foucha fully possesses the ball. I have seen several fans on Twitter say “but we got it within 2 seconds!” Well, two seconds is a long time in football. However, a respected former official has come out and said that the continuing action by players should have been enough to override the early whistles and give the ball to Arkansas.
Finally, the SEC statement was garbage. It referenced the “immediate continuing football action” discussed above, which in one expert’s opinion actually happened. Plus, the officials making the call during the game didn’t actually give that explanation. There was no mention of there not being an immediate recovery when the ref made the announcement and, when asked about it afterward, Sam Pittman did not say that’s what he was told.
Long story short, the Razorbacks got screwed.
5. SEC Opening Lines - Week 4 - Nikki
Auburn (-3) at South Carolina
Kentucky at Tennessee (-7)
LSU at Florida (-13)
Ole Miss (-2) at Arkansas
Texas A&M (-7) at Mississippi State
Vanderbilt at Missouri (-16)
Georgia at Alabama (-5)
I had a fine week three of betting but doubling down on Florida for no reason other than I don't believe in Jimbo Fisher... was a mistake. I also foolheartedly thought Mike Leach would get his squad together for a comeback week against Kentucky and boy, was I wrong. TWO POINTS. Miss State threw for four more interceptions than they did points on Saturday. Completely embarrassing. And now, in classic Leach fashion, he's saying the team's full of bad apples that need to hit the road. Just two weeks ago, he was loading up a bandwagon...
I came out +86.57 in week three so I'm up $330 this season.
