Someone mentioned earlier this week how Bama nearly gained all the possible yards available to them from scrimmage against Ole Miss (ie it wasn’t that much different than Bama vs. air). I think that would be an interesting advanced stat - yards from scrimmage/yards available from scrimmage.
A next level twist would be to plot that vs. offensive time of possession. Would allow you to separate explosive offense (2020 Bama) vs. dominating time of possession offense (2019 Navy) vs. ball control offense (1910’s-2000s Cabot Panthers) vs. anemic offense (Morris Arkansas).
Explosive: High yds gained/yds available, low TOP
Dominating TOP: High yds gained/yds available, high TOP
Ball Control: low yds gained/yds available, high TOP
Anemic: low yds gained/yds available, low TOP
