Regarding [db]Kliff Kingsbury[/db]’s comments, Bielema said he was shocked because in this profession you handle things a different way. He said he’s done clinics for 20 years, and at clinics you talk about how you do things. He was invited in, he said, and he has a great relationship with high school coaches. He talked about how they lay out their program and then had a half hour segment on defense philosophy. He said on defense if they play someone completely opposite of them, they feel that’s to their advantage. He said if people start taking what coaches say at clinics as motivational tools, it’s going to be a very weird world. He said he wasn’t talking with Kingsbury before, so he doesn’t know why he’d talk with him afterwards.

“If that was an ass-kicking, I’d love to know what last year was,” Bielema said. “I’m happy he got to vent, and hopefully he feels a lot better.”

[db]Bret Bielema[/db] said he saw some things on film he didn’t see on Saturday. He said the offense really kicked it into gear and did some positive things. Defensively, if they just could have made some stops on defense they would have had a different outcome. The focus this week is to be good in all three phases, not just one or two.

[db]Jared Cornelius[/db] had a double-fracture and had surgery yesterday. He spent the last two nights in the hospital. There is a chance [db]Kody Walker[/db] can play this week, but they’re waiting to see what the cast looks like. The possibility of him playing is at fullback or special teams.

Bielema said [db]Dre Greenlaw[/db] can get better, but he by no means looked lost out there. He also said there were some real positives on which [db]Santos Ramirez[/db] can build.

Bielema said [db]Cole Hedlund[/db] has missed two field goals in two games, but he’s their best option and has been their best player in practices. He didn’t seem to indicate there was any change coming at kicker.

Bielema said a break here or there, a ball bouncing the right way, a call here or there that’ll go the right way, there’s certain things that just haven’t happened. Against Ole Miss and LSU, the things that began to swing their way were calls here and there and turnovers that went their way.

Bielema said they’d planned to go for 2 points after what he thought was defensive pass interference against [db]Hunter Henry[/db], not an offensive PI.

Bielema said he feels the team’s attitude is back, especially in the red zone. Bielema said last week after being sick really opened his eyes as to how tough [db]Alex Collins[/db] is.

Bielema said there’s a blessing in disguise to have the opportunity to play Texas Tech and their style of offense and now to play Texas A&M. They can see what they did and didn’t do well. The biggest difference with Tech’s offense versus A&M’s is the Aggie receivers are bigger and they’re not afraid to hand the ball off.

He said they can’t allow the quarterbacks to scramble and make yards. The biggest problem on defense has been third-and-long situations. He pointed to the 3rd-and-11 where Patrick Mahomes scrambled for a first down, and that could have been the swing they needed.

D.J. Dean will be the first guy up at punt return, and JoJo Robinson or Damon Mitchell could also return. Robinson and [db]Rawleigh Williams[/db] will remain at kickoff return.

Regarding Williams, Bielema said he took a really big step on Saturday and is kind of waiting on that one big play to really bust through. The plan this past Saturday was to get him in much earlier. He said Williams is excited to go back home to Texas.

Bielema said being in the third year of a redo, everybody wants it to be here faster than it has come. He knew every game would be a battle. Over the history of his career, Bielema was undefeated in regular season non-conference games until now.

Regarding Texas Tech only having four incompletions, Bielema said he knew there weren’t many drops or incompletions, but to see the final statistics he said they were hitting on all cylinders with no drops, no misfires, etc. He said Mahomes threw two bad passes and both were intercepted.

Regarding his brash speaking behavior that everyone loves before he loses. He said he’s been in scenarios where he’s going to stir the pot a little. Regarding the Ohio State deal, he was asked the question and answered. He said he didn’t bring it up, he was asked (by Bob Holt).

Beside Cody Hollister, every injured player can redshirt. He said the injured players, he wants them to work and get back healthy and then make smart decisions when it’s time (regarding the NFL, etc.).

Regarding A&M, Bielema said his guys know if they line up and are ready to play fast and physical, good things can happen.

Dan Enos

When asked, [db]Dan Enos[/db] said he has never been around a team that has had so many injuries to key players like this one has so far. With those injuries, he said he was excited to see the younger guys play and contribute.

Enos said they put a huge emphasis on running the ball last week and were very disappointed with the way things went on the ground against Toledo. They did a better job identifying fronts and getting the right play.

He said he was surprised to see the offensive PI call on Henry, but he said you can’t let one play define them. He said if you agree with the call or not, it doesn’t matter. The call is the call and they have to move forward.

Regarding A&M’s talented defensive front, Enos said it’s going to be a huge challenge. Arkansas has not allowed a sack this season, so he has been pleased with the pass protection. They had a guy at [db]Brandon Allen[/db]’s feet on the first third down, but other than that it has been good. He said if they’re not good with their fundamentals and hold the ball too long, those ends will make an impact.

He said a week ago, [db]Kendrick Edwards[/db] was on the scout team. It goes to show, and they told the players, you never know when you’re going to get your opportunity. Enos said he did a great job and practice really well last week with a different level of maturity. Now that he has a taste of action, he expects that to carry on moving forward.

Enos said he felt Allen played well but had four or five ‘minues’ on the day they wished they had back. He said Allen overall played well on third down and did well in the run game getting them in the right play. Bielema said they went to Tampa 2 coverage and then they went to man free after the timeout. Allen threw the ball too soon to [db]Jeremy Sprinkle[/db]. Enos said they didn’t lose the game because Allen threw that one bad pass, there are plenty of things to point to, he said.

Enos said John Chavis’ defense plays fast, they’re athletic and very, very well-coached. He said Chavis does a tremendous job and has a great reputation. He said they watched a lot of LSU tape from last year to start preparing for the defense.

Enos said this will by far be the best defense they have played so far this year. He said they do not want to be one-dimensional against A&M, he knows that.

Coverages they’re seeing this week is different with more quarters from Texas A&M versus more Cover 3 and Man Free like Texas Tech ran. They threw more deep comebacks and more midrange throws against Tech. They didn’t see much press man coverage last week, so there weren’t many bomb opportunities against Tech.

Robb Smith

Defensive coordinator [db]Robb Smith[/db] said Texas A&M saw the game and they’ll have to make some adjustments after the Texas Tech game. Smith said they’re going to have a better plan and execute better this week. He said they didn’t hold up their end of the bargain against Texas Tech. He said when they’ve got a guy in space, they have to have more than one player there to make the tackle. He said they didn’t play fast. He said they have physical football players, and 99 percent of it is putting guys in the right place, and that’s on him.

Smith said at halftime last weekend, they needed to be more physical and disrupt the quarterback. He said it was on him, and the main talking point at halftime was to get more pressure on the quarterback. He said Tech executed at a high level and deserves credit, but he feels they made some things too easy on them.

Smith said he likes the athleticism having [db]Brooks Ellis[/db] and [db]Dre Greenlaw[/db] on the field at the same time, and part of putting Greenlaw out there was due to the personnel of Texas Tech, but [db]Josh Williams[/db] will play more when they go to a three-linebacker look at times this week. Smith said Greenlaw got off to a really good start and played with a lot of poise. He made some mistakes but nothing he can’t correct. He said they will evaluate things week-to-week, but the plan is to move forward with those linebackers as starter.

He said they’re dynamic on the perimeter and they catch the ball well. He said their receivers are big and strong but have a shiftiness they have to be prepared for. He said they have to make sure they have the right matchups and make sure they have the help they need on the perimeter. He also said they need to do a better job of putting pressure on the receivers.

Regarding [db]Kliff Kingsburry[/db]’s comments, the only fuel he needs for his fire is re-watching the film of the Tech game. He said Kingsburry can say whatever he wants. That’s his prerogative, Smith said.
