I cant possibly think of how this would benefit the state, but I did indeed see something on ESPN about the governor of Louisiana is wanting to shut down a lot of Louisiana college athletic programs including LSU football. Anyone else heard anything or got any info on this. Blew my mind when I saw it. Im curious to see what yhis is all about

No one in Louisiana thinks this is anything more that political posturing. Zero chance this happens.

He isn't cancelling football. What he is saying is that they are in a statewide budget crisis. He wants a new tax passed and he is trying to scare the citizens into supporting it. He is saying that funding for the university and all other state ran organizations will be dried up forcing them to close the doors until new funding (the tax) is allocated. This would potentially end the semester and make the football players ineligible to play next year due to incompletes on their transcripts.

There is no way in hell he let's that happen and the state capitol building isn't burned to the ground. Could you imagine the vitriol and rage this would provoke. It will never get that far.... one way or another. It's a massive game of chicken to see who finches first. The Governor or the people

New Gov. wants to raise taxes. Not going to cancel football, just ignore that.

You think those cajuns are mad after the Hogs hang an 'L' on them in Death Valley?? Tell them their football program is canceled and they'll need to start rooting for Ole Miss or Alabama... they would literally storm the state capitol with torches and pitch forks :)

No way this happens...no way!

Thats what I would think is that it should help the economy. How does taking away all that money help increase state finances? Doesnt make much sense to me

Not enough to overcome a $970 million dollar deficit this year and a $2 billion projected deficit next year. They're going to have major budget problems until oil prices come back.

Yes I understand it's not enough to overcome the total deficit but what is the benefit of taking away something that actually turns a profit? I don't see the logic.

You don't see the logic, because you don't understand what he is saying.

People continue to think he is threatening to take it away. He is not saying that in any way. All this discussion about how taking football away would be dumb is not understanding how this works. He is saying in the event that they do not fix the budget, the school will run out of money in April. There would not be any money to pay the staff, and they would have to declare bankruptcy. This would force all students to receive "incompletes" on their transcripts, thus making student-athletes ineligible for the fall. It would also allow those players to transfer to any university without sitting out a year, more than likely.

Makes sense. Thanks

Isn't football one of the few sports that actually turns a profit at schools like LSU?

The new governor is not canceling football per se

He's saying the schools don't have enough money to continue operating through the semester If the colleges close, no one receives their grades, no one graduates, and none of the players will be eligible next fall
