I don’t think the cop actually did anything wrong, and I can see where the professor was upset that someone called the police over him breaking into his own house. But I don’t think a President should have gotten involved in it either.

I actually think we have made a lot of progress since then but are far from where we should be/want to be. To say Obama set us back is ridiculous; it's the reaction to Obama's presidency in some quarters that set us back.
It's not Obama's fault that there is still a shitload of racists in this country.
It is identity politics and the victimhood mentality that are setting us back. Which party promotes both?

You do realize a member of a protected class means that they are victims of discrimination. That goes hand in hand with the Democratic practice of idenity politics and victimood.
