The Arkansas Razorbacks held a closed practice on Friday (Saturday's will be open for four periods), and cornerback Jared Collins, defensive end JaMichael Winston and linebacker Brooks Ellis met with the media afterwards to discuss the first two days.
"I think it was good," Collins said. "I think we made strides from yesterday. The first day we were kind of rusty, but we came out and corrected our mistakes, and I think we got better today."
"We were out there getting after it, working hard, running to the football. That's really all you can do on a day without pads," Ellis said. "First day, we could have done better. Today was a lot better and we've just got to improve every day…guys were a lot more prepared."
"Coach [Robb] Smith, he tells us every day 'we can get to Atlanta with the guys we have, and I believe that truth because this guy has come in and changed the culture here. Took us from being basically where nobody was talking about us on defense to now people acknowledge us," Winston said.
New faces in the secondary
Collins, a junior who is a returning starter, welcomed two freshmen corners to the team in Ryan Pulley, 5-11, 210, and Nate Dalton, 6-3, 197. Fellow true freshman Willie Sykes, 6-0, 190, was listed as a cornerback recruit but was seen working with safeties the first day. Walk-on Reid Miller, 5-9, 193, is another freshman to watch who enrolled in the spring semester.
"Pulley is really good. I think he's advanced for being a freshman," Collins said. "He's really patient. He also has good feet on breaks. He plays the ball very well…I feel like he can [help this year].
