Prompted by the "star gazer" debate, I spent some time Sunday afternoon going back through old Rivals final rankings (which are the only thing I think should be considered in this discussion) and final AP Polls. I went back to 2002, when Rivals started, and the Top Ten rankings starting with 2005. I didn't record anything below Top 10 (except for Wisconsin , see below). Here's what I got. Just as an example - last year's Top 10, followed by the team's four previous recruiting class rankings. (If I were filing this in court I would go back and check everything. If I made a mistake, I copied something down wrong or it's a typo).

2012 Top Ten (AP Poll) - with previous 4 years Rivals rankings

1. ALABAMA (2012 - 1st. 2011 - 1st. 2010 - 5th. 2009 - 1st)
2. OREGON NR 9th NR NR)
3. OHIO ST 4 NR NR 3
4. NOTRE DAME NR 10 NR NR
5. GEORGIA NR 5 NR 6
6.TEX A&M NR NR NR NR
7. STANFORD 5 NR NR NR
8. SCAR NR NR NR NR
9. FLORIDA 3 NR 2 NR
10. FLA ST 6 2 10 7

I didn't really know how this was going to line up until I typed it.

I think we can agree this data shows that stars matter more in the SEC than anywhere else. Surprise! Most of all, I think, it shows that coaching matters. Surprise! Florida State and Miami are consistently in Top 10 in recruiting, and the only time either of them ended up in Top 10 was FL St last year. We all know about Texas . And LSU is always up there in recruiting, but fell out of the Top 10 last year with bowl loss to Clemson.

Everyone also knows that CBB coached players up at Wisconsin, but I thought this was worth repeating:
He took over there in 2006 with previous 4 classes ranked:
2006 - 41
2005 - 33
2004 - 60
2003 - 24
He finished the season ranked #6 in the country in 2006.
His next 5 classes were ranked: 2007-34, 2008-41, 2009-43, 2010-67, 2011-40, 2012-56. His teams finished those seasons ranked:
2007- 24th
2008- not in top 25
2009- 16th
2010- 7th
2011 - 10
2012 - not in top 25

I can't figure out how to put this is in Danny's "No coincidence" thread, and this may not work out either, but here's a post a made a couple of years ago (which took a lot of work).
I think the argument on "do we need a top ten class to get to the CFP?" is not quite the same as "do
stars matter?"
