Here is our breakdown:
1) We were in 12 personnel 3 times on the 1st drive, 3 times on the second drive, 1 time on the 3 play 3rd drive, and 4 times on the 4th series including the 38 yard touchdown pass to Hatcher.
- Out of those 8 times we only showed the same look two times. We showed bunch, I, Weak I, Strong I, and Shotgun.
- We kept the same personnel groupings while using Sprinkle at fullback, H, and even in the slot out of shotgun.
2) We used 20 personnel one time one 3rd and 10 and we hit a dig to Hatcher, Drew was in the slot.
3) we ran 13 personnel 1 time on the first 4 drives. #36 Jack Kraus comes in during those 13 personnel groups. The Second half we used it more. Out of the 13 personnel we threw it 3 times completing just one of them.
4) We ran 22 personnel 2 times on the second drive, we ran once and threw once. We also used it on the first drive as well. Running a play that went for a first down and it was called back with a penalty. Kody comes in at the fullback in 22 personnel.
Dan Enos used formations to get match-ups a lot. We get the most talent on the field during 12 personnel having Sprinkle and Henry on the field at the same time. Enos changed the eyes of the Defense lining them up in different formations. We used 8 different formation's out of the same package group. UTEP tried to bring in an extra DB to defend it because our efficiency throwing the ball with that grouping was very high. He took formations and manipulated the defense by simply taking what they were giving. Here are 4 plays that I will break down.
Play 1: First play of the game:
We came out in 12 personnel with with Keon to the Right and Jared to the Left. Both Hunter and Sprinkle were to the right as well. They showed blitz with FS #21 coming on an A gap blitz off a twist with the Mike. They brought their DT's both in 1 Techniques to open up the A gap. Allen got a pre-snap read and it was three step drop off or run action, then ball was out to Keon with a 10 yard speed out. It was pre-snap because he got the blitz look at the corner was walking off on cadence. Jared was on a post on the back side to occupy the only safety, It became an easy throw all according to formation and pre-snap reads.
Play 2: Second touchdown.
We came out one 3rd down right after BA had missed Hunter Henry and again got them by formation. We came out again in 21 personnel with Sprinkle in the slot forcing them to bring in another DB. Collins and Walker were split to each side of BA. Sprinkle ran a 10 yard dig at the proper depth to attack alignment in the red zone; forcing them to double Sprinkle. Then on the backside Jared ran a fade to the back pylon drawing a double from the over the top safety. Leaving Keon one on one backside on the same fade. BA threw it to the back pylon for a perfect throw and catch. They brought both Mike and Will in A gap forcing a double with the over the top safety on Sprinkle because the mismatch with a corner.
Play 3: 3rd Touchdown.
The Screen to Jared was just a thing of beauty that was being set up by formation again. Their response to our Shotgun looks and 12 personnel was to again counter with an extra safety. First play of the three play series we went 11 personnel (the same look as the bubble screen to Drew) and this time we ran an off-tackle and it was stuffed with them bringing 9 guys on pressure. So Enos wasn't going to be stubborn he simply came out on second and long with 12 personnel putting Keon and Jared on the same side. They showed a look they had already shown 2 times before with Sprinkle and Hunter to the same side. Sprinkle ran a drag route under the flag route by Hunter. They were rolling 3 DB's to any bunch side to occupy any two TE sets. Keon ran a vertical on the hash to take up the FS that was rolled over top of him. Jared had man to man on the outside and ran a 10 yard comeback and with the perfect stem and timing the ball was there and the corner was laying on the ground. This pass was once again determined pre-snap because of alignment there was nothing any DB could do at this point.
That set up the screen for the touchdown to Jared. They were showing blitz to the bunch formation and instead of 12 personnel this time we hit them for only the second time in the game with 11 personnel. Hunter was opposite the bunch to the right and their Cash safety came on a strong side blitz into the Shotgun look. Alex was to the weakside (or bunch side) and so we had a 3 on 2 on the outside. This was an easy read as the alley defender showed blitz by alignment and the safety was high at 10 yards and the corner was elevated at 8. So Keon was inside on the bunch and he kicked out on the safety who came down. Hollister blocked the corner and Jared hit the chute got north and south then did the rest himself. Easy play off of formation and what they gave us.
Play 4: 4th touchdown.
They were starting to get a dose of Walker and Collins after 4 consecutive runs including a 28 yarder by Collins to start the drive. They started to bring their Free Safety again with one on one coverage to the field and zone to the boundary. So Enos saw this and overloaded the boundary with a bunch out of 12 personnel again, The Safeties rolled over the top and zoned the backside with Sprinkle and Henry. Then #21 was caught on a safety blitz again, because last time we showed that look we ran a draw play. Safety read draw and BA read one on one to the field.
A good route coupled with a good throw was a 38 yard TD. Keon broke to the outside changing the corners hips and as soon as he got over the top Keon re-routed the outside release to right back on his original plain never allowing the DB to recover. That is best route running I have witnessed since Petrino was here. Good coaching gets good players into Great positions.
Anyways, I had some diagrams i drew up but for whatever reason I couldn't get them from Word or Paint to this board. I hope you enjoy this read, I know I used a lot of technical stuff and I apologize if I used too much. Hope its interesting to those who chose to read.
