OT: Does anyone else think it's not just a coincidence. . .

I think what Josh Duggar did was inexcusable and in no way I would defend him. I also disagree with a lot of the Duggars beliefs. However I do think they were wrong in releasing that it was his sisters. To go through what those girls went through growing up and then have it exposed to the world in this fashion is terrible.

Unfortunately, I met the Duggars once. They were living in motel in the hood in NLR, while Jim Bob did his legislature thing. They drove a church van, that their "community" bought for them because they were to poor to purchase their own (Jim Bob himself told me that). They had like 10-11 kids at this point. I've never watched the show intentionally. But, have seen their big ass house, etc on tv. Where did all this money come from? Something about them is just off. There is no other way to explain it.

This incident does nothing but prove the concerns I have had about them since that meeting. Anyone defending their actions is absurd!

Just read that the same alderman in Fayetteville is putting that non discrimination ordinance back up with some tweaks to make it tougher to fight and address some of the more valid concerns of the first one. I wonder if the Duggars are going to do those robocalls again accusing trans people of being molesters.

Having investigated child abuse in the great state of Arkansas for almost 9 years, I can say unequivocally that sexually incidents like happened with the Duggars happens very frequently. And reading from the comments some of you will be surprised to know that MOST of the time there is never any criminal justice involvement when the offender is that young. And the situation is handled in a very similar method.

This is why I have cut back my involvement here to just sports .... albeit violating my own rule by opening this thread and commenting on it.

Besides it is not just this board it is society in general that sickens me ... on one hand "worshipping" rude and tasteless behavior and it perpetrators .... and on the other the sanctimonious preaching and whining of deluded fools.

There is far too much wrong with this nation .... and we are being plied to ignorance and tolerance of it by the "bread and circus" of our time.

We MUST choose to ignore BOTH the sickness IE "Kardashians" as well as the sanctified buffoons that wail away at them, and focus on the real issues.

. . . that Jim Bob Duggar sent son Josh to a "close friend" for a lecture after Josh "confessed to molestimg his sisters, and said friend is now serving a 56 year sentence for child pornography?

And that the cult that the Duggars follow for their home schooling (ATI) is led by one Bob Gothard ( age 80), who surrounds himself with very attractive young women and who is suspected of assaulting more than thirty of them over the years?

Shades of Carcosa.

Gothard's teaching materials tell girls that if they feel offended, assaulted, whatever, they need to soul search and ask themselves what they were wearing, did they smile at a boy, etc. This makes me more than angry.

I have been vaguely aware of the Duggars for years, since I am from Springdale. I didn't know until a few months ago that they have (had?) a reality show. People actually watched that crap?
Gothard is an uncommon last name. Hope there is no relation

IMO this is just more of the incessant attacks on the family. The Duggar parents opted to handle this issue within their family. That's the correct place to discipline children. I guess the PC thing to do is to haul the 14 year old kid down to juvenile detention and have him locked up. That wouldn't help. I have a brother who was locked up several times back in the 60s for drinking and abusing drugs. All locking him up did was introduce him to some very bad dudes and his problems only increased.

Sadly most people who are not christians have some mistaken belief that christians should be perfect people and should never disagree with society's trends. They gladly jump on some misfortune like this to assuage their feelings of dislike for christians. I have been a christian for over 20 years. Less than half my life. I know both sides of this. I haven't met one christian in over 20 years who doesn't believe they are a sinner. If they did they wouldn't need Christ.

I would be surprised if anyone here is without sin. If so, feel free to cast the first stone at the Duggars. Otherwise understand your own hypocrisy.

No this isn't something you handle "within the family", and that mindset led to 3 little girls being molested that didn't have to be. I resent your implication that you are somehow more "Christian" than I am because I'm deeply offended that these people enabled their son (who needed professional help) to molest their girls.

Thank you japierce. I was afraid I would go off on him about his "I'm a better Christian than you" comments, not to mention his clueless idea about keeping it in the family. And someone should let him know that Christian is always spelled with a capital C.

If he inappropriately touches a girl, I can see trying to handle it in the family. When it happens again, the kid needs professional help and needs to be removed from his home. Not sent to a family friend (who turns out to be a pedophile as well) for a few months. There's a world of difference b\w drinking/drugs and molesting kids. One is an addiction that oftens masks deeper emotional issues and can be treated, the other is predatory behavior for which there's no none effective cure or treatment (at least not that I'm aware of).

Secondly, get off the cross with the Christian persecution crap. I was Christian, became an Agnostic. Non Christians don't expect Christians to be perfect, but when you use your own religious beliefs to try to take away an American citizens rights (LGBT) by stating that LGBT's will molest kids and it turns out you allowed your own kids to be molested b\c you didn't protect them, you're going to catch some sh!t over that.

As mentioned above, if it happens only once and the son comes clean...maybe it can be handled in house. When it happens again, you have a serious problem...and from all reports, the Duggars didn't handle this well at all. Plus...with their tv show and publicly espousing their beliefs, they do hold themselves to a higher standard...fair or not.

I don't want to see Josh in prison or necessarily branded a pedophile for something he did when he was 14...but he should have gotten help from someone who is a professional in helping sexual offenders get to the root of their desire to do what he was doing. And the daughters should have gotten professional help as well.

Lastly...without Josh understanding why he did what he did, there's always that chance he will repeat his offenses, no matter how strong his belief in Christ is. All men and women in the bible sinned and fell short...including David, who was a "man after God's own heart"...yet had a man killed so he could have that man's wife. Josh, nor any other Christian, is perfect...and we all need help to not stray.

This has nothing to do with being Christian or not. I don't care at all about your history of non-Christianity, Christianity, whatever it is. This is about a family of hypocrites covering up a crime while admonishing others who don't live life the way the Duggars see fit. How you could possibly defend that is unthinkable.

Any one who thinks it's ok to have 19 kids is goofy ! I have 2 and, I'm convinced that
that's all I need !

Let's not be stupid with comments like this. I find the lack of wisdom and immorality on this board as spalling as the Duggar situation. Compared to most of us, the Duggars have done a better job of parenting their children than most of us on this board. Even Jesus had Peter deny him 3 times! So, let's crucify him too! Remember, the Duggars do not watch TV like we do. Those kids were not exposed to the immorality that is on TV on a daily basis. The family friend to do construction work was part of a discipleship program much like Teen Challenge and the Gospel Mission Union. Their children are not "street wise" like kids who go to public schools. If you were to talk to those children, you would find them so protected from " what's what" in our culture, that you would classify them as being " naive". I know this because my children were home schooled and that is how they were/are viewed.

The way by the way Lolly Hog, the man you referred to is not Bob Gothard, his name is William and he goes by "Bill Gothard". Just thought you would want to get the right inmate when you go to crucify him.

Did Jim Bob and his wife handle this correctly, they did what they thought was right and appropriate at the time. Would the do things differently now, like many of us who are parents, absolutely. But let's not make a young naive teenage boy a hardened criminal and turn around and elect the Clintons for a 3rd term! Now, who's the hypocrite?

You can resort to name-calling and can stand on your faulty moral pedestal all you want - that said, if you consider what the Duggar's boy did as incestual rape, you certainly have that right. The fact that you seem to ignore SEVERAL MAJOR POINTS OF THE CASE: The first being that he was a juvenile and the girls were not even aware that they had been molested, the second being that Josh told his parents and asked for help, himself, the third being that the Duggars got he and the girls professional help, and the fourth that he was cleared by the institution that he received certified counseling from.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. I believe in the power of prayer and the power of Christ. I believe that people deserve second chances and while I get that you seem to think that Josh Duggar should be in prison for life for his actions as a kid - I certainly don't have to agree with you (and for that matter, won't lose any sleep at night because some over-critical, self-righteous hack disgusts my position on the issue)
I don't care if the girls never realized they were being molested or not. They were still molested.

all these judges on here......all these EXPERTS that know every bit of the whole story.

Ask to consider anything but lynching of the whole family and you are a pervert that believes rape is a good thing. Some are sad that the young girls were even allowed to be alive to be touched by their brother. They should have been aborted and then some posters would feel better

Isn't it convenient that a select few are allowed to keep a thread like this on the Razors Edge while all the underlings would have been sent to the Grim Bottom long ago. I have to say the Mods that are currently running this board are a joke. I want a refund and cancel my subscription please!!!

That's your first "major point"? She didn't know she was molested, so it doesn't really count?

Time to take my roofie game to a new level.

I know, it's kind of stunning to learn there are people out there who believe that it's not so bad if you get to second base with your pre-pubescent sisters, as long as you don't wake them up.

Regardless of what you think the Duggars deserve, people who can even begin to rationalize this as 'just a boy going through puberty' will always be an enigma to me. People who rationalize it and in the next breath bemoan what society is coming to....well, that's just irony.

I am astonished that some are defending this abhorrent and aberrant behavior. The Duggers are part of the Quiverfull movement; google it. They remind me of 17th Century Amish but with appliances.

We toss around the phrase "drinking the Kool-Aid" on here a lot.
Who remembers where that phrase actually came from?
I can kinda sorta (not really, but trying to be nice) see defending the Duggars, because they could be seen as "victims" of Gothard's cult.
But defending Gothard??
Sooner or later that Kool-Aid will kill ya.

I am serious Bob. Your agnosticism shows. Thanks for the stone. No, I am not a troll. I am a former Razorback player who is partially crippled from laying it on on the line in 1974, So, no, I am not a troll. I am the father of 6 children. My children were homeschooled before the Duggars began to have children. I am very familiar with the ATI homeschooling program that the Duggars were/ or are a part of. I have taken "heat" from Christians and Agnostics for having more than 1.7 children, which I believe is the statistical norm. I have taken " heat" from church people because I home schooled. I have taken " heat" because my children were not allowed to go certain places, do certain things, and had a dress code. With a heavy heart, I can say I have one son who is bitter about the way he was raised and 5 children who are grateful for the way we choose to raise them.

I am very offended personally by some of the things that were said on this board, not because of what Josh Duggar did, but because the parents choose to do things different than the norm. Those statements and the ideology that because they had several children and homeschooled and are conservative in their morals and faith, are not the reasons why this "act" took place. No, Bob, I am not a troll. Thanks for asking.

Hey, mods, how about deleting these kinds of posts, do not send them over here, please.

The Duggars are on record saying that not only did they send Josh for manual labor & "christian counseling" but after he came back to the family and turned himself in to the police - both he and all of the girls got professional counseling from a legally certified individual. So to say that they just did the "manual labor christian counseling" is factually incorrect. They did get Josh a professional shrink so that argument is just untrue. I'm not saying that they got it 100% right - but they were far from negligent

For the record, I've never seen the show and don't really care about the Duggars - except that they are Christian brothers and sisters. You can believe or not in the power of Christ to transform an individual or not - but the fact is, they got Josh christian counseling and professional (non-christian affiliated) help. That would be good enough for me if he was cleared - by the professional - which he was.
How’s this take treating you today?
