I've come a long way having never played football but I still lack more technical knowledge of the game than I want to. So, for you guys that have it, jump in here.
Since the spring, I've liked Enos' play calling style. That was solidified in the first game, as it looked to me that he attacked what the defense gave him. I like that in theory. We did the same thing against Toledo. Run wasn't working, so we effectively passed the ball all day between the 20's.
But, unlike UTEP, we we didn't score on those passing plays. So, we were forced to play against a short field, and obviously, your ability to run the ball becomes more important in the red zone.
So, for those of you that really know the game, especially rushing offense, was it more due to play design or players not executing? After seeing 7-10 attempts not go very well, and noticing that our OL wasn't getting a push, I started asking myself if we were relying on too many draws. Line up and run off tackle more. We're bigger and stronger, right? But, then again, our OL didn't get a push all day.
Also, a lot of the tackles were made by their LB's, which highlights our lack of FB, IMO. In years past, we've had FB's picking up that initial second level defender.
I tend to disagree with the heat I see some applying to Enos. I can see where he was just going to what was giving us a better chance to move the ball. But, run play design might've had an effect on that.
Would love educated thoughts.
