Not going say much today. This was a really bad game and we all know that. It doesn't take a football wizard to know that scheme wise we are being figured out. Our quarter quarter half defense isn't going to work verses these 5 wide schemes. They get better players in the slot matched up with our lack of speed at LB, and throw short to the cover 3 side and they overload the cover 2 side and get three guys working against 2 on that side and get their fastest guy matched up with our Mike LB. We are getting out schemed really bad right now in a lot of areas. People have scouted us well and they are playing the numbers game and finding our holes. Kingsbury isn't even a great coach and he had us figured out. With teams like this we should be challenging wideouts in press and forcing them to make throws in tight windows. Mahone threw two deep balls into tight windows and threw two picks. Also our pressures aren't scaring anyone. Two times we ran A gap pressures and we were 1 out of 2 in effecting the throw. Ellis got after the Qb in the first drive of the 3rd and forced him to short arm a wide open throw to incomplete it. The other time Ellis did a poor job of disguising it and their qb hit a slant right off of it. Anyways, its really bad right now and we are in a lot of trouble, this team has no leadership and have been poorly prepared for both games.
Grades:
QB: Frankly he regressed today. He made some really bad throws in this game the one pick he threw was horrendous no one was within 20 yards of who the threw it to. The pass to Sprinkle was worse, because even Enos on the sideline (if you can read lips) said, "All you had to do was throw the ball." Same story second verse, and I like the kid and feel like at times he gets too much blame, but folks I have coached long enough to know that sometimes you have to bench people for the betterment of the team. You as a coach are responsible for the TEAM not an individual.
Grade: F
RB: Collins was better and Williams is a good back up.
Grade: A-
OL: Best game of the year by these guys, we ran the ball and they still pass protected rather well.
Grade: B+
TE: Good game, but these guys have to stop getting dumb penalties.
Grade: B
WR: heavily scrutinized and depth is being really tested and to me they are coming up HUGE. We have lost 3 of our top guys due to injury and they still are making plays. Proud of this group and the coach of the year on this group right now is a guy that I have frankly doubted in the past. Michael Smith deserves credit, this group has seriously improved.
Defense: Just F
Dline was bad at staying in their rush lanes, Dre Greenlaw was the only guy who had a pulse Saturday as far as tackling. Safeties were as bad as you could ever see anyone be in a D1 game. Liddell was caught out of position all night long and none of them can tackle. Corners were decent in coverage, but to be honest they were a victim of a poor scheme against what they were doing. Tackling on the other hand was horrible by the corners.
Special Teams: Bad why can we not hit chip shot fg's? oh wait we don't have a ST coordinator, instead we do this ST by committee.
F
Coaching: I hate it because I like these guys, but two weeks in a row they have been schooled by novice at best coaches. I grade myself every year after the season and I re-evaluate how to get better. I really want BB to succeed here, but all he does is run his mouth instead of getting better and it is blowing up in our faces.
Last thought, there is too much talent out there to be playing like this. I don't care what anybody try's to tell me if we had consistency at Qb and actually changed the scheme from time to time of defense we would be 3-0 right now PERIOD!! Last two games we have been OUT COACHED NOT out talented. In his tenure we have went into the 4th quarter with a chance to win 8 times and we are now 0-8. That isn't a lack of talent that is a lack of a CLUTCH QB and a coach that freaks out in the 4th quarter.
Have a great day, I was just brutally honest in this, sorry if it offends you.
