only difference was, unlike Kentucky, MudState actually played lights out for 40 minutes. I hope this puts to bed the notion that Kentucky is just too good for us to beat. The truth is, we are not good enough to come out flat, miss open 3s, get chewed up on the boards, miss layups, not get back on D, get caught sleep-walking on both ends. We can't beat anybody playing like this, but what's worse, we couldn't score 50 and got blown out by 32 ... against MudState.
When we laid a collective egg against KY, I did not blame MA, because that kind of deal happens sometimes, and you rarely see that with an MA coached team. But it's happened again, and as a coach, you've got to own that. Can't have it multiple times in a season.
* 1-of-10 from 3 as a team, less than 23% FGs, 65% FTS, outrebounded 50-39, 3 team assists, our shots were blocked 9 times (same as KY)
* MK looked like he was point-shaving tonight. Absolutely no energy, no movement, turned down point blank looks to pass outside, matador D ... shaking my head at that effort by our best player.
* Durham lost his mind tonight, regressed back to 2014-15 in terms of decision-making and forcing stuff that simply wasn't there. He got caught with the ball late into some shot clocks, so he was forced to launch prayers, but he was a big reason we got deep into the shot clock.
* Hannahs didn't have it, and in a game when he is not making shots, his junior high defensive efforts are glaring.
* Manny led the missed layup parade, didn't give much on the glass or defensively.
* Beard was awful ... fumbling and kicking the ball, dribbling in circles, can't close out on shooters or stop penetration.
* Trey played small tonight ... he's not athletic or long, so he has to be physical and proactive to be effective ... he failed on those accounts tonight.
* Bell did the same thing he did against KY = came out cold, cold, cold, then proceeded to drive too deep too often, and got his shit swatted over and over again. He's good for at least 1 block on his drives per game, but we see what happens when that becomes the go-to part of his offense.
* Jimmy Whitt = the only bright spot. The shot continues to be problematic, but he drove and drove the ball tonight, and he drew SEVEN fouls on MudState by himself (should have been 10 fouls, refs swallowed whistles a few times) ... 11 points and 4 rebounds, 3-of-12 FGs (ouch), but 5-of-6 FTs and he made it his mission to get to the rack, which he did on some really nice drives. Also made a couple of nice passes that should have been assists, but of course we couldn't buy a layup.
* I'm sticking with 16-15, 9-9, but we're going to have to pick up a road win somewhere because I think we lose at least one more at home.
