  • Defensive line coach Rory Segrest described UTEP running back Aaron Jones (1,321 rushing yards last season) a guy who can get on the edge and make some guys miss.
  • When Segrest was with the Philadelphia Eagles as special teams coordinator, they faced current UTEP coach Sean Kugler when he was offensive line coach at Buffalo. Obviously, those two never matched wits, but that's the one known coaching connection.
  • Despite having what is considered a 1A and 1B group on the defensive line, the same four starters have gone wire-to-wire since practices started Aug. 6. Segrest said the biggest difference with those guys versus the next four is that they are more consistent, but they will roll in some players very early Saturday.
  • Josh Williams said he found out he was moving to MIKE when Vernon Hargreaves texted him to come to his office and then said 'you're at MIKE.' It was as simple as that, Williams said.
  • For Hackett, the biggest problem he said he had at MIKE was trying to get his fits down and wasn't tracking the ball. He was having to think to much, but his role is different at SAM. He will still be at MIKE in the 4-2-5, and even when he was a SAM before he was still the MIKE in the 4-2-5.
  • D.J. Dean said he will get to face off with former Hog Kelvin Fisher Jr. when he's on punt return team. He talked to Fisher a couple of months ago, he said. He said Fisher told him he's going to be ready for them, and he said that he better be ready.
  • There were a lot of short answers today from defensive personnel, and it's pretty clear they are ready to hit someone else.
  • More to come with the full report and video.
