FB Recruiting Arkansas in-state QB commit transferring to Conway from CAC

Arkansas' 2025 quarterback commit is changing uniforms for his senior season.

Grayson Wilson, who spent the last three seasons at Central Arkansas Christian in North Little Rock, will be transferring to Conway to play for Buck James and the Wampus Cats.

Since taking the reins for the Mustangs, Wilson flourished on the field. He threw for 3,413 yards and 41 touchdowns to just two interceptions, and added 837 yards and 15 scores on the ground.

Wilson committed to Arkansas over a year agoand has kept his recruitment quiet. At the time, he held offers from Pittsburgh, Illinois and Central Arkansas in addition to Arkansas.

He was unrated by all of the major recruiting services, and committed on April 15 following the Razorbacks' spring contest.

Now, Wilson is a four-star passer, the No. 4 player in Arkansas for the 2025 class and No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the country according to Rivals.

Throughout the offseason, Wilson has grown not just on the football field but on the hardwood and baseball diamond as well. After winning an Arkansas basketball 3A State Championship, he went to Dallas, Texas, where he was named MVP quarterback of the Under Armour Next All-American combine.

Most recently, Wilson helped CAC baseball to a state championship appearance, a game the Mustangs lost 6-2 to Gosnell.

With the full athletic year behind him, Wilson now heads to Conway where he'll refine his skills on the football field before arriving in Fayetteville to start his college career with the Razorbacks.

As far as Wilson's recruitment goes, he's still locked in to Arkansas and showing zero signs of wavering. He will take his official visit to Fayetteville the weekend of June 21, and plans to enroll at Arkansas early in January, so he can go through spring practice with the team.

Double First Base to be utilized for 2024 SEC Baseball Tournament

From the SEC:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (May 20, 2024)-----The Southeastern Conference will implement the use of a double first base on an experimental basis throughout the SEC Baseball Tournament.

The purpose of the double first base is to reduce collisions between the defense and the batter-runner at first base. It has been utilized in a number of SEC non-conference contests this season.

Guidelines for using the double first base, as prescribed under NCAA playing rules, includes:

  • A batted ball hitting or bounding over the white portion of the bag is a fair ball. A batted ball hitting or bounding over the colored (orange or green) bag without first touching or bounding over the white section is foul.

  • When an initial play is being made on the batter-runner at first base, the defense must use the white section of the double base and the batter-runner must use the colored base except in the case of a dropped third strike. After a dropped third strike, if the fielder is drawn to the side of the colored base, the runner would go the white base and the fielder to the colored base. On a dropped third strike, the fielder and batter-runner may touch either the white or colored base.

  • If there is a play on the batter-runner and the batter-runner touches only the white portion of the double base and the defense appeals prior to the batter-runner returning to first base, it is treated the same as missing the base. Penalty: Batter-runner is out.

  • On extra-base hits or other balls hit to the outfield when there is no chance for a play to be made at the double base, the batter-runner may touch either the white or colored section of the base. Should, however, the batter-runner reach and go beyond first base, they may only return to the white section of the base.

  • Once the batter-runner reaches first base, they shall then use only the white base.
The SEC Tournament is scheduled to begin with four games on Tuesday. The championship game is slated for Sunday.

Baseball SEC Baseball Tournament bracket

The 2024 SEC Baseball Tournament bracket is officially set, and the Arkansas Razorbacks earned the two-seed for this year's competition at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Alabama.

Arkansas (20-10 SEC) ended two games behind Tennessee (22-8 SEC) and Kentucky (22-8 SEC) in the conference standings this season, as the Volunteers earned the top seed in the tournament for winning the SEC East and Arkansas earned the 2-seed for winning the SEC West. Kentucky and Texas A&M round out the top four seeds at three and four, respectively.

Seeds 5-12 will meet in a single elimination format on the opening day of the tournament Tuesday, followed by traditional double-elimination play Wednesday-Friday. The tournament will return to single elimination play on Saturday. A total of 17 games will be played throughout the tournament.

On Wednesday, Arkansas will play the winner of Tuesday’s 7/10 seed matchup that features 7-seed Alabama and 10-seed South Carolina. Baseball Seven Diamond Hogs receive All-SEC honors

Arkansas baseball had seven players honored as All-SEC selections by the league's coaches on Monday afternoon.

Junior pitcher Hagen Smith was named the SEC Pitcher of the Year, while Freshman righty Gabe Gaeckle and Freshman third baseman Nolan Souza were named to the Freshman All-SEC team, second baseman Peyton Stovall and shortstop Wewhiwa Aloy were named Second Team All-SEC and outfielder Peyton Holt and third baseman Jared Sprague-Lott were named to the SEC All-Defensive team.

A native of Bullard, Texas, Smith was by far and away the best pitcher in the conference and arguably the country throughout the entirety of the regular season. His breakthrough campaign led him to becoming the Arkansas career strikeouts record holder with 349, eclipsing former Hog lefty Nick Schmidt.

Smith recorded an 9-0 record, 1.52 ERA, 29 walks and 150 strikeouts across 77.0 innings pitched. The southpaw started 14 games and struck out at least 10 batters in 11 of his outings.

"It’s been great having him in our program," head coach Dave Van Horn said on Friday. "He’s been a starter, he’s been a closer, he’s been a middle guy. He’s done a little bit of everything and he’s been good at all of it. Give him credit, but he’s meant a lot to our program the last three years. He’s been right in the middle of everything good we’ve done."

Smith's ERA ranked first in the nation and he was also top five in hits allowed per nine innings (4.09, 1st), WHIP (.83, 4th) and strikeouts (150, 2nd). He did not commit an error on the mound during the regular season and he limited opposing base runners to just one steal all year.

A freshman from California, Gaeckle emerged as a trustworthy closer throughout the season. After a rough first career outing on Feb. 18 against James Madison, Gaeckle seemed to gain more and more confidence just about every time he took the mound and really blossomed during SEC play.

The right-hander had a 3-2 record, 1.91 ERA, seven saves, 15 walks and 48 strikeouts across 37.2 innings pitched in the regular season. Gaeckle's seven saves ranked tied for first in the SEC with Ole Miss' Connor Spencer and Texas A&M's Evan Aschenbeck.

Gaeckle hasn't allowed an earned run since April 6 against Ole Miss and he has struck out 20 batters in 18.0 innings in that span.

“I think Gabe is going to be really, really, really good," Smith said on Friday. "Probably one of the best freshman pitchers here in a long time. There’s been a lot of good ones. He just goes out there and gets experience. He goes out there in those big spots. It’s not easy for a freshman to get out like that in an SEC game and throw in big sports. It’s awesome that he’s getting that experience and does really well.”

Souza played multiple positions for Arkansas during his freshman campaign, as he saw appearances at third base, second base and designated hitter in 38 games. The Hawaii native was effective in 108 at-bats as he mashed seven home runs, seven doubles and hit for a .259 batting average.

Stovall slashed .339/.404/.548 with nine home runs and 37 RBI through 43 regular season games this year. He posted 17 walks and totaled 60 hits, including 10 doubles. During SEC play, Stovall has posted a .315/.438/.390 slash line with six homers and 20 RBI in 30 league games.

Aloy led Arkansas in home runs (13) and RBIs (54) en route to slashing .276/.368/.495 for the Razorbacks. He also racked up eight doubles and seven stolen bases in 55 games played.

Sprague-Lott and Holt earned All-Defensive recognition thanks to highlight plays made throughout the season. Sprague-Lott finished with seven errors during his senior campaign, a big drop off from the 15 he made a year ago at Richmond. Holt only made three errors all year and finished with a .966 fielding percentage.

Football Anton Juncaj one of biggest DL transfers of offseason

According to Rivals' National Recruiting Director Adam Gorney, Albany transfer DE Anton Juncaj is one of the top 10 biggest DL transfers of the offseason.

Here's what Gorney had to say about Juncaj:

"A few years ago, Jared Verse transferred from Albany to Florida State and parlayed that into a first-round NFL Draft pick a few weeks ago. Could Juncaj be on the same path? Arkansas is certainly hoping so as Juncaj totaled 55 tackles and an amazing 15 sacks last season at Albany.

"It’s a huge step up to the SEC but Juncaj clearly has elite skills and could be a major contributor for the Razorbacks."

Quote from Sam Pittman on Juncaj towards end of spring practice:

"A lot of really good, he played well Saturday, and he needed those reps up there against (Carmona). I thought he played really well. I’ll tell you what he is, he plays extremely hard, but he’s very, very strong. Has good leverage, and obviously he set the record over there at I believe Albany, for a reason. We’re really glad he’s here, but he’s playing the run and pass."
