FAYETTEVILLE — The Arkansas football team held its second open practice of the spring in front of a handful of fans inside Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium on Saturday morning.
Led by fifth-year head coach Sam Pittman, the Hogs began with some warmups and individual drills before transitioning into 11-on-11 team periods with some special teams work mixed in between.
"The defense did a good job of getting the ball out, we had a few fumbles that we picked up and then we had a good amount of PBUs and picks," redshirt freshman linebacker Carson Dean said Saturday. "We’ve been really urgent on tackling and getting the ball out as many times as we can. I feel like as a group we did a better job at tackling today."
With sunny skies and temperatures in the low-to-mid 70s, the conditions were pretty ideal outside of a consistent breeze. Media members joined forces to provide very unofficial stats for the practice from the 11-on-11 team drills, most of which were situational. Not all players who recorded stats are listed, plus some notable players did not participate in team drills.
Notable plays
- Once again, sophomore cornerback Jaylon Braxton picked off quarterback Taylen Green in practice. This time, it was on a ball that Green just airmailed over the middle and Braxton intercepted it.
- Shortly after, Braxton forced a fumble against tight end Luke Hasz and the defense recovered.
- Sophomore running back Isaiah Augustave made two big plays with a 48-yard touchdown reception on a screen play he took to the house, plus he added a 52-yard rushing touchdown later in practice on a play where he shed multiple tackles and also put a nice juke move on to get in the end zone.
- Receiver Isaac TeSlaa caught a 9-yard touchdown on a perfect fade route from Green with cornerback Kee'yon Stewart in coverage during low red zone work.
- Freshman running back Braylen Russell made a very impressive contested catch on a throw from Green with linebacker Brooks Both in tight coverage. Russell continues to impress, but ball-security is an issue right now as he had another fumble Saturday.
- Running back Dominique Johnson had a 19-yard touchdown run in the high red zone drills that looked like his old self — rumblin', bumblin', stumblin'.
- Florida transfer safety Miguel Mitchell picked off Jacolby Criswell on a contest ball in low red zone work.
- Freshman defensive back Tevis Metcalf had a nice pass breakup against quarterback Jacolby Criswell.
- Sophomore defensive end Quincy Rhodes Jr. sacked Malachi Singleton in the red zone.
- Walk-on running back Emmanuel Crawford took a screen pass from freshman quarterback KJ Jackson for 25 yards.
- For fun, defensive end Nico Davillier nearly picked off Green on a pass that just went right to him. Davillier found himself playing far on the edge near the sideline as the BUCK defender and he just missed the interception.
