When does patriotism end and abuse of power begin?

The reason I ask is that when Snowden released all that classified info, I thought we should throw the book at him, life in prison, hard labor and he was maybe the worst criminal of all time.

However, I am starting to wonder. First I realize what he is saying could be totally lies, but, I never felt comfortable with the Patriot Act which allows us to put people in prison, no charges, no defense, no charge, no trial and keep them there for years and years.

Now I seriously wonder if in fact, an employee of the US
Government should be forced to not see violations of our basic rights simply because it is the Government doing it. Is there a line between secrecy and total violation of basic rights?

Frankly, I am not sure that Snowden is not an outright traitor, but also not sure if he tried, as he says, to ask questions and was told to shut up.

I guess I am asking, where do the checks and balances start and end that our system was based upon? Is it possible that our own government can be wrong? And if so, what should be done?

Tough questions.
