With the likes of Toledo, Memphis, Temple, Duke, Utah, Houston, and Iowa doing as well as they have this year, does it put to bed the argument over stars? The following is a look at their average class ranking since 2013 and important wins they've had this season:
  • Toledo - average ranking is 83 (13 - 70th, 14 - 90th, and 15 - 90th) - beat Arkansas
  • Memphis - average ranking is 85 (13 - 90th, 14 - 89th, and 15 - 77th) - beat Bowling Green (coach being mentioned for Miami), Cincinnati, and Ole Miss
  • Temple - average ranking is 72 (13 - 85th, 14 - 59th, and 15 - 73rd) - beat Penn State, Cincinnati, and East Carolina
  • Duke - average ranking is 61 (13 - 68th, 14 - 58th, and 15 - 62nd) - beat Georgia Tech (at beginning of year when they were highly ranked), Boston College, and Virginia Tech
  • Utah - average ranking is 50 (13 - 44th, 14 - 67th, and 15 - 41st) - Michigan, Oregon, Cal, and Arizona State. (they got exposed against USC, though)
  • Houston - average ranking is 73 (13 - 50th, 14 - 78th, and 15 - 90th) - beat Louisville
  • Iowa - average ranking is 57 (13 - 53rd, 14 - 59th, and 15 - 58th) - beat Pitt, Wisconsin, and Northwestern
Now, people are going to argue competition, but there is no argument for these teams having more highly rated recruits than the teams they beat. Toledo's QB was highly rated, but these teams are built on low three stars, two stars, and no stars. Just something I've been mulling over the last few days...
