JUCO corner could take a Sunday visit to Florida

Florida has left no stone unturned as the coaches approach the final stretch run before National Signing Day. On Thursday, the Gators sent defensive coordinator Geoff Collins out to North Dakota to check on junior college cornerback Joseph Putu.

At this time the Gators have not offered the Wahpeton (ND) North Dakota State College of Science prospect, but are looking to possibly bring him in on a very late official visit on the eve of the dead period in recruiting.

“I am heading to the airport now for an official visit to Arkansas this weekend,” explained Putu. “They [Florida] mentioned me taking a flight after Arkansas to Florida and then spend a couple of hours there for a visit. My visit to Arkansas doesn’t start until tomorrow [Friday] and I'll be at Arkansas till Sunday morning and if I do visit Florida, I would go there Sunday.”

The Gators have only been eyeing the 6-foot-2, 195-pounder for a few days, but is one of many schools to inquire about him.

“Florida is kinda late though, they called me yesterday [Wednesday] saying they were going to come and see me. I said okay and then Collins came by and I told him I was going to Arkansas for a visit because I promised them I would visit. Arkansas offered a few days ago and then Ohio State, UCLA, California and then Florida called me within the last three days.”

The proposed visit to Gainesville is a fluid situation at this time, but there is interest from Putu in making it to the Sunshine State.

“If I do get down there I want to see the campus and meet with all the coaches,” said Putu. “It’s DBU there and they have the best defensive back in the SEC and have put them out for a while. I just don’t have an offer from them.”

So far Putu has taken official visits to Tennessee State, UAB, Toledo, and Arkansas this coming weekend. Heading into that visit it seems the Razorbacks are the team to beat for his commitment.

“They have been messing with me for a while,” said Putu of Arkansas. “I don’t know if I would commit on the visit while I am there, but I would like to wait until Wednesday for Signing Day.”
