I have mentioned Wayne (Red) Hardin on this board before, but with his passing last month, I wanted to once again to pay respect to the College Football Hall of Fame coach from Smackover. He built an outstanding program at Navy, with 5 victories in a row over Army, and achieved an end-of-season No. 2 national ranking in 1963 battling the Longhorns in the 1964 Cotton Bowl with Heisman winner Roger Staubach as Hardin's quarterback. He had another Heisman winner a few years earlier in Joe Bellino at halfback. He was coached in college by Amos Alonzo Stagg at Pacific, and has been credited by Bill Belichick as a major influence on his coaching style. He enjoyed coming back to his roots and visiting family in Arkansas. He was 91 at his passing. If you want to know more about Coach Hardin, google the New York Times April 14 article.
