The No. 2 Arkansas Razorbacks (32-5, 12-3 SEC) are set to host the Texas A&M Aggies on Thursday evening at Baum-Walker Stadium for the series opener in Fayetteville.

Arkansas picked up a 13-3 win over in-state foe UAPB on Tuesday night to rebound from losing two of three games at Georgia over the weekend. Texas A&M has won seven straight, including two of three games at Tennessee (April 4-5) and a series sweep of South Carolina last weekend.

The Razorbacks lead the SEC with a team batting average of .327, while the Aggies' batting average of .275 is third-worst in the league. The teams have more similar earned run averages, as the Hogs are fourth in the conference with a 3.66 team ERA and the Aggies are seventh with a 4.24 ERA.

Junior left-hander Zach Root will make his sixth SEC start and 10th overall start of the season Thursday. The East Carolina transfer gave up three earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks across 5.2 innings pitched in the series opening win at Georgia last Friday.

Arkansas owns a 51-49 overall record against Texas A&M, including a 24-21 mark in games played in Fayetteville. Under head coach Dave Van Horn, the Hogs are 23-17 overall and 13-5 in Fayetteville against the Aggies.

Baseball Texas A&M knocks off Arkansas in Fayetteville

1745033418866.png

The No. 2 Arkansas Razorbacks (33-7, 12-5 SEC) have now lost two straight weekend series, as the Texas A&M Aggies (23-15, 8-9 SEC) won the rubber match, 9-2, in Game 3 on Friday night at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville.

Arkansas brought the game within one run after six innings, but a lightning delay before the seventh inning seemed to throw things off. The Aggies plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning and three more in the top of the ninth to make it an unenjoyable watch for Hog fans down the stretch.

Left-handed starting pitcher Landon Beidelschies gave up just one earned run — a solo homer — on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts across four innings to begin the game. Righty Aiden Jimenez was starting to settle in before the delay, but he didn't return afterwards and things got rough.

Four different Razorbacks had at least two hits in the game, including shortstop Wehiwa Aloy and catcher Ryder Helfrick, both of whom had doubles. The Hogs had nine hits compared to 11 by Texas A&M. Four of the Aggies' hits came with runners in scoring position and five were extra base hits, including two home runs from centerfielder Jace LaViolette.

LaViolette drove his third homer in as many games to the scoreboard in right-center field in the top of the first inning. Beidelschies didn't allow anything else in the frame, while the Hogs were unable to capitalize on a one out single from Wehiwa Aloy in the bottom half.

After Beidelschies faced one more than the minimum in the top of the second, the Razorbacks threatened in the bottom half with a one out single from Brent Iredale and two out walk from Helfrick. Aggies' starter Myles Patton stranded the runners, though, with his fifth strikeout of the game to that point.

Beidelschies worked the game's first 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third. Charles Davalan led the bottom of the third inning off with a single and he was then advanced to third base on a single from Logan Maxwell before Kuhio Aloy tied the game with an RBI sacrifice fly out that tied the game at 1-1 after three innings. The Hogs managed to get Patton's pitch count up to 69 pitches by the point.

The Hogs picked up a pair of quick outs in the top of the fourth inning, but then Beidelschies issued back-to-back two out walks. It took a dart of a throw from Davalan to Helfrick at the plate to get the third out and keep the game tied after and Aggies' challenged prompted a review that confirmed the out.

Arkansas turned to right-hander Aiden Jimenez in the top of the fifth inning, when he gave up a two out single followed by a two-run homer from LaViolette — his fourth of the weekend — that gave Texas A&M a 3-1 lead.

Davalan singled to leadoff the bottom of the fifth and he went to third via a double from Wehiwa Aloy. Davalan came home to score on an RBI sacrifice fly from Maxwell to cut the deficit to 3-2. Texas A&M then turned to right-hander Luke Jackson in relief of Patton, and Jackson retired two straight to leave Aloy on the bases.

After Arkansas went down in order in the bottom of the sixth inning, the game went into a lightning delay around 8:35 p.m. CT. When began roughly 30 minutes later, freshman Cole Gibler was on the mound for the Hogs and he instantly gave up a solo homer to Aggies' second baseman Ben Royo. After giving up a double right after, Gibler was replaced by fellow freshman Carson Wiggins.

Texas A&M added its fifth run courtesy of an RBI sacrifice fly out and then it scored a sixth on an RBI single from Bear Harrison with bases loaded. Luke Jackson remained the pitcher for the Aggies in the bottom half and he went three up, three down.

Hogs' reliever Christian Foutch came on in the top of the eighth and retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts with rain coming down. Kuhio Aloy reached on an error and Brent Iredale hit a two out single to give Arkansas a pair of runners in the bottom half, but Jackson stranded them by striking out Hogs' freshman Gabe Fraser.

Arkansas turned to lefty Colin Fisher in the top of the ninth after Foutch put a pair of one out runners on base. Both of those runners scored courtesy of a double from Caden Sorell that made it 8-2. The Hogs then turned to right-hander Will McEntire, who gave up an RBI single to make the deficit seven runs before finally getting out of the frame.

Helfrick singled to leadoff the bottom of the ninth and chase Jackson to bring in Aggies' lefty Kaiden Wilson, who picked up the final three outs with little drama to end the contest.

Up next, Arkansas will host in-state for Little Rock on Tuesday and Wednesday at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville. First pitch Tuesday against the Trojans is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and the game will stream on SEC Network+.

Arkansas at Georgia (Game 1)

Head coach Dave Van Horn and his No. 1 Arkansas Razorbacks (31-3, 11-1 SEC) will open a top-10 series against the No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs (30-5, 8-4 SEC) and head man Wes Johnson on Friday evening at Foley Field in Athens, Georgia.

Arkansas swept a bad Missouri team at home last weekend and outscored the Tigers by a score of 51-9 across the three seven-inning games in the process. Georgia entered last weekend ranked third in the nation, but the Bulldogs dropped to seventh after being swept on the road at Texas.

Both teams earned midweek victories Tuesday, with the Hogs earning a 7-3 win over Arkansas State and Georgia picking up a 16-2 run rule win over Presbyterian. These two teams rank near the top of the SEC and the nation in most hitting categories.

"Georgia can really score," Van Horn said Thursday. "They’ve got 92 home runs, somewhere in there, lead the country. No lead is safe. You’ve got to know that when you’re playing them. Just play. It’s different. They had a beautiful grass surface last time I was there and many times I was there.

"I was kind of surprised they went to turf just because of how nice it was but I know they had to go underneath the outfield to bring in some power and different things to their new facility. But they play on turf now. We’re used to that. We played there against Vandy. But it’s a different game when you play on turf a little bit. Yeah, it’ll be a good series. It’ll be a real good series."

Georgia leads the nation with 92 home runs, while the Hogs are tied for fourth nationally with 74 longballs. The teams are back-to-back in the national rankings in on-base percentage, as the Bulldogs check in at No. 3 (.453) and the Hogs are No. 4 (.449).

Designated hitter Rylan Zaborowski paces Georgia and ranks second in the SEC with a .424 batting average. He is tied with Robbie Burnett for a team-high 15 homers on the year and the pair also have 51 runs batted in each. Burnett also has 11 stolen bases and he's been hit by 17 pitches this year.

“It’s going to be an interesting series because if you two teams that are kind of alike, in a way if you really look at it, and then we are on the road so advantage Georgia," Van Horn said. "But this is going to be another tough challenge on the road for our team and I just really look forward to seeing how we handle it.”

The Bulldogs will start junior right-handed pitcher Brian Curley opposite of Arkansas ace Zach Root, who has logged two quality starts of at least seven innings over his last three outings.

Baseball Arkansas evens series with Game 2 win over Texas A&M

1745013996437.png

he No. 2 Arkansas Razorbacks (37-6, 13-4 SEC) evened up the series against the Texas A&M Aggies (22-16, 7-10 SEC) with an 11-5 win in Game 2 on Friday afternoon at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville.

Arkansas scored eight unanswered runs across the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a commanding lead that it didn't relinquish in what was the first half of a doubleheader Friday. The brother duo of Wehiwa Aloy and Kuhio Aloy was on fire, as the former finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run and three runs scored, while the latter added three hits of his own.

Nine-hole hitter Justin Thomas Jr. added two home runs in the game, while Brent Iredale busted out of his slump with a clutch double and three runs batted in, as well. The Razorbacks tallied 12 total hits in the game compared to the Aggies nine, and the Hogs had seven hits with runners on base.

Back for his first start since Feb. 23, right-handed pitcher Gage Wood was met with a dangerous Texas A&M lineup that didn't take it easy on him. Wood only managed to retire one Aggie on a strikeout, and allowed three earned runs on three hits with a walk and a wild pitch on 20 pitches before exiting the game.

Luckily for Wood, the relief duo of Ben Bybee and Gabe Gaeckle combined for 8.2 innings of two-run ball with 10 combined strikeouts. Gaeckle, who was replaced by Wood in the starting rotation, went 5.2 innings to close the game down.

In his first start since early in the season, Wood wasn't exactly excellent. He started things off with a walk before getting tagged with a two-run blast to make it 2-0, Aggies. After a strikeout, he allowed a double and a single, which forced Arkansas to make a pitching change to righty Ben Bybee. Bybee got the Hogs out of the jam, but they were down 3-0.

Arkansas quickly responded in the latter-half of the frame, as Charles Davalan doubled and Wehiwa Aloy singled to lead things off. The Hogs earned their first run via a Carson Boles sacrifice fly out, then Kuhio Aloy singled and Rocco Peppi got plunked with a pitch to load the bases with one out. Brent Iredale drove another run across with a sac-fly but Ryder Helfrick ended the inning with a strikeout and Arkansas down 3-2.

Bybee worked his way through two Aggies quickly to begin the second, but surrendered a solo homer to make it 4-2, Texas A&M.

After a 1-2-3 top of the third for the Hogs' bats that included two strikeouts, Bybee fended off the Aggies with two punchouts of his own in a hitless frame.

The red-hot Wehiwa Aloy sent a ball 448 feet to left field to open the bottom of the third, which made it 4-3 Aggies at the time. Kuhio Aloy also reached base with a single, but the Hogs couldn't muster any other runs against the Aggies.

The top of the fourth was the last inning for Bybee, who drew a flyout before letting an Aggie reach with a single. Arkansas changed to righty Gabe Gaeckle out of the bullpen, and he got hit with a single to begin his day. He bounced back with a groundout, then picked the runner off at third base, who was almost half-way up the line for some reason.

Arkansas needed its offense to pick up the pace in a big way in the bottom of the fourth, but back-to-back groundouts didn't give hope for that reality. Fortunately for the Hogs, Justin Thomas Jr. smacked a homer over the left field wall to tie the game up, 4-4.

Gaeckle returned to the mound in the top of the fifth, and drew a groundout for out No. 1. He then worked the count full before walking a batter, then got tagged with an 0-2 single to give the Aggies life. Gaeckle avoided danger with a strikeout and groundout.

Like he's been all series, Wehiwa Aloy was clutch again with a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth. Boles followed that with a single before Kuhio Aloy drove in the lead-taking run with a single of his own.

The fun didn't stop there, as after a pitching change to righty Brad Rudis, Maxwell got plunked with a pitch to load the bases with no outs. The struggling Iredale came to the plate and doubled to left field to increase Arkansas' lead to 7-4. The Hogs were down to the final out of the frame after a Cam Kozeal RBI groundout, but Thomas sent his second bomb of the day to left center to hand Arkansas a 10-4 advantage.

Gaeckle was excellent in the top of the sixth, with two strikeouts and a popup. The Razorbacks went down in order in the bottom half thanks to a Kuhio Aloy double play, which wiped Boles (walk) off the base paths.

After a scoreless seventh inning from both teams, the Aggies cut the Hogs' lead to 10-5 on a leadoff solo homer from Blake Binderup in the top of the eighth. Gaeckle retired the next three in a row, including the last two on six straight strike, to limit the damage. The Hogs plated an insurance run via an RBI groundout from Wehiwa Aloy in the bottom of the eighth.

The Aggies went away quiet in the top of the ninth despite Gaeckle allowing a one out single, as he finished out his 5.2-inning relief appearance by closing down the game.

Up next, Arkansas and Texas A&M will play the second half of the doubleheader Friday evening at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville. It will stream on SEC Network+.
