Baseball Wernes on third, Polk on first

I have confirmed that Bobby Wernes will coach third base and Hudson Polk will coach first base this season for Dave Van Horn's squad. Wernes has been coaching first base with Nate Thompson at third base, while Polk was a catcher for the past two seasons.

Wernes was promoted to full-time assistant for the first season last year. This will be his fifth season with DVH's staff.

If you were there, you may have noticed the two were lined up this way for the exhibition matchups with Oklahoma State in the fall.

Arkansas Basketball Coaching Search: Hot Board

From @jacksoncollier

Arkansas reportedly has an opening for the men's basketball head coach position as the Razorbacks seem to be on the hunt for a new leader with Eric Musselman reportedly taking the USC opening.

Who could the program bring in as the SEC is set to expand to 16 teams following the addition of Texas and Oklahoma to the league?

Here’s the first edition of the Arkansas Basketball Coaching Search Hot Board from HawgBeat on some options after talking with sources and looking around college basketball.

Chris Beard - Ole Miss

Beard's name has been making the rounds as a possibility since January, when Musselman was initially tied to the Louisville job. Although Beard recently agreed to a new contract with Ole Miss, sources have indicated that the buyout amount is low and Beard "would listen" to Arkansas if the program reached out.

Given that Beard has a connection with some of the Arkansas brass, it is almost a certainty that the administration will reach out. Will he accept the job? Who knows, but it sounds like he would at least hear Arkansas Athletics Director Hunter Yurachek out.

Beard had a rapid rise in the coaching profession after leading Little Rock to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament. He made a Final Four run with Texas Tech and then left for his supposed dream job at Texas, before being fired for a domestic dispute controversy.

In one season in Oxford, Beard turned the program around and has it poised for a return to the NCAA Tournament moving forward. On top of the connections to the administration and familiarity with the state, Beard wins basketball games and is one of the best coaches in the country. He could also likely bring assistant coach Wes Flanigan to Fayetteville and build a fence around the state of Arkansas.

Coaching Career:

1991–1995 Texas (GA)
1995–1996 Incarnate Word (GA)
1996–1997 Abilene Christian (assistant)
1997–1999 North Texas (assistant)
1999–2000 Fort Scott CC
2000–2001 Seminole State JC
2001–2011 Texas Tech (assoc. HC)
2011–2012 South Carolina Warriors
2012–2013 McMurry
2013–2015 Angelo State
2015–2016 Little Rock
2016–2021 Texas Tech
2021–2023 Texas
2023–present Ole Miss

Jerome Tang - Kansas State

Tang has also been mentioned along with Beard since Musselman was tied to Louisville, but mostly as a backup option. His name has popped up for multiple openings, as well, with reports surfacing of frustrations with the administration in Manhattan.

After a great first year at Kansas State that included a run to the Elite Eight, the Wildcats weren't as successful this season in part because of injuries and because their starting center was dismissed from the program despite being cleared by the NCAA.

A long-time assistant at Baylor under Scott Drew, Tang has a strong reputation as a player's coach and has done more with less so far at Kansas State. He is ideal for the NIL market and prospective donors in Northwest Arkansas, and could likely even help return some pieces that have entered the transfer portal already.

Coaching Career:

1993–2003 Heritage Christian Academy (TX)
2003–2017 Baylor (assistant)
2017–2022 Baylor (associate HC)
2022–present Kansas State

Will Wade - McNeese State

I know, I know. Arkansas fans despised Wade when he was at LSU, and he has the show-cause and infraction history, as well, but all things considered, what he did was not all that egregious, and he is an active coach in the NCAA right this second.

Wade just led McNeese to a 30-3 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, where the Cowboys lost to 5-seed Gonzaga in the Round of 64. While he did not have a lot of postseason success at LSU, he was a fantastic recruiter. Schemes are still important, and Wade has the Xs-and-Os chops as well.

If Arkansas fans are willing to rinse the bad taste out of their mouths from his time in Baton Rouge, he would be a strong a-- hire.

Coaching Career:

2005–2007 Clemson (GA)
2007–2009 Harvard (assistant)
2009–2013 VCU (assistant)
2013–2015 Chattanooga
2015–2017 VCU
2017–2022 LSU
2023–present McNeese State

Brad Underwood - Illinois

A name that has been thrown around very minimally, Underwood is an intriguing option at Illinois. While he is 60 years old, he is a consistent winner and has made eight of ten NCAA Tournaments in 11 years as a head coach. In all but one of those appearances, though, he has failed to advance past the Round of 32. His Illinois team did make it to the Elite Eight this season before falling to No. 1 UConn, 77-52.

Underwood is a hard-nosed coach who demands a lot of his players. While it is admittedly an interesting cultural fit, it could be a good hire with his history of winning. His lack of NCAA Tournament success could be a hard-sell after consistent success in the postseason under Musselman, but his quality as a coach can't be denied.

Coaching Career:

1986-1987 Hardin–Simmons (GA)
1988–1992 Dodge City CC
1992–2003 Western Illinois (assistant)
2003–2006 Daytona Beach CC
2006–2011 Kansas State (assistant)
2011–2012 Kansas State (associate HC)
2012–2013 South Carolina (associate HC)
2013–2016 Stephen F. Austin
2016–2017 Oklahoma State
2017–present Illinois

Bucky McMillan - Samford

Without being too reactionary on recent and early success, McMillan seems like a rising star in the coaching industry. His brand of "Bucky Ball" has propelled Samford to one of the best mid major programs in the country. He led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Tournament this year where they nearly knocked off Kansas in the Round of 64.

The exciting brand of basketball could thrive in Fayetteville and provide offensive firepower for the first time in years. Being from Alabama, the worry is that he could potentially leave if the Auburn or Alabama head coaching job ever opens up. There is also the concern about his early success not being sustainable, but regardless, he is a great value hire with a ton of potential who could excel in the portal. His experience as a high school coach will also allow him to build a rapport with coaches across the state, something that had been missing under Musselman.

Coaching Career:

2006–2008 Mountain Brook HS (assistant)
2008–2020 Mountain Brook HS
2020–present Samford

Nick Smith Jr. makes first NBA start

1737388489910.png

Another former Razorback made his first career NBA start over the weekend.

Former Arkansas guard Nick Smith Jr. logged his first career start for the Charlotte Hornets on Friday evening and he made the most of it with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field in a win over the Chicago Bulls. The No. 27 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Smith also added five rebounds, one assist and one steal.

"It means a lot," Smith said during an in-game interview. "I've been dreaming all my life for this moment and I'm truly blessed to be in this position."

A product of North Little Rock High School, Smith has averaged 9.8 points per game over his last five games with Charlotte. He scored a season-high 18 points with four made 3-pointers and five rebounds during a Jan. 5 loss to Cleveland.

"I put in a lot of work," Smith said in an interview Jan. 17. "I feel like it ain't going to do nothing but translate, especially when I get out here in the game. So just continue to put in the work and play my role."

Smith has spent most of the season as a bench player for the Hornets, plus he's averaged 24.3 points per game across three starts with the team's G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm. Smith has appeared in 20 games for the Hornets so far this year and he's averaging 11.6 minutes per game.

NBA insider Jake Fischer recently reported that "rival teams have revealed Charlotte's willingness to discuss the availability of Nick Smith Jr." as a trade candidate. The league's trade deadline is Thursday, Feb. 6.

One of three one-and-done player for the Hoop Hogs during the 2022-23 season, Smith was rated as the No. 2 overall recruit in the country for the 2022 class. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound guard appeared in 17 games and averaged 12.5 points per game during an injury-hampered season that ended with a Sweet 16 loss to UConn.

The Arkansas Razorbacks (11-6, 0-4 SEC) are officially in must-win territory as they prepare to face the Missouri Tigers (14-3 3-1 SEC) on Saturday at Mizzou Arena.

Missouri, which is led by third-year head coach Dennis Gates, is coming off a 83-82 win over mutual opponent No. 5 Florida, which defeated Arkansas, 71-63, on Jan. 11. The Tigers also own SEC victories over Vanderbilt and LSU.

Arkansas' struggles to rebound continued against LSU, as the Tigers won the battle on the boards, 42-37. If the Hogs want to start an SEC winning streak, they'll have to rework their mindset toward being more physical.

"The mindset of what’s going on before in the rebounding area is, if you don’t hit first, you’re going to get hit," associate head coach Kenny Payne said Friday. "So, you have to go attack that guy that’s coming in to get the offensive rebound. You have to meet him first. He cannot take two steps forward before you go to him.

"If that happens, you end up under the basket. These are some big, strong guys, and they end up getting second and third possessions because of that. And also, our guards, we have a team, we need all five guys crashing the boards. Not just the bigs. Not just three guys, we need all five."

Hoops How to Watch, BetSaracen Odds: Arkansas vs. Georgia

The Arkansas Razorbacks (11-7, 0-5 SEC) are still searching for their first win of Southeastern Conference play and will host the Georgia Bulldogs (14-4, 2-3 SEC) on Wednesday night at Bud Walton Arena.

Georgia is coming off a close 70-68 loss to No. 1 Auburn, while the Razorbacks got thumped on the road at Missouri last Saturday. Arkansas fell behind 18-2 to start the game and never recovered.

The Hogs will also be without their starting point guard, as Boogie Fland was listed as "out" in the first SEC Availability Report on Tuesday night, and according to a report from Jon Rothstein will be out for the remainder of the season.

Head coach John Calipari revealed after last Saturday's game the freshman hurt his hand in the game against Florida the weekend prior. In his place, the Razorbacks are planning to use a committee-style approach at the point guard spot, associate head coach Chin Coleman said Tuesday.

"Obviously it’s natural for D.J. to move into that role," Coleman said. "He’s done it his whole life. He’s done it in his career. So it’s an easy fix for him just moving to that role. But committee wise, Johnell (Davis) will have to take some of that responsibility, and Billy Richmond, who has played that position some in high school. It’s different obviously on this level, but he has played the position so we’re going to ask for him to take some of that.

Hoops ESPN analyst says Calipari made mistake with 9 rotational players

When John Calipari was hired to lead the Arkansas basketball team, he had the unorthodox idea to bring just nine rotational players onto the team in his first year.

That decision has backfired to this point, with injuries to key players leading to fatigue and a lack of chemistry on the roster. Arkansas is now 11-7 overall on the season and winless through the first five games of Southeastern Conference play.

"I think John probably made a mistake only having nine guys on scholarship," ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg said on The Chuck and Bo Show on Tuesday. "I understand exactly why he did it and it makes common sense in the world of the portal and trying to develop team chemistry. You want guys that are part of the solution and feel like they're involved, but guys are playing so much year-round and I think guys get beat up a little bit."

The injury bug has been prevalent throughout the program in the last three months. Forward Jonas Aidoo missed almost the entire preseason with a foot injury. Guard Johnell Davis' wrist has hampered him immensely, and now freshman point guard Boogie Fland is dealing with a hand injury that will likely sideline him for at least Wednesday's game against Georgia.

Arkansas associate head coach Chin Coleman said Tuesday the plan is to use a committee of players to fill the void left by Fland.

"Obviously it’s natural for D.J. (Wagner) to move into that role," Coleman said. "He’s done it his whole life. He’s done it in his career. So it’s an easy fix for him just moving to that role. But committee wise, Johnell will have to take some of that responsibility, and Billy Richmond, who has played that position some in high school. It’s different obviously on this level. But he has played the position so we’re going to ask for him to take some of that."

The shortened rotation makes sense in a vacuum. In a perfect world, a basketball team really only needs nine players. But in the real world, injuries happen. On top of that, with less players on the roster, it requires those players to live up to the hype more often than not.

"We’ve got nine guys and if Boogie is out for a while we may have eight guys," Calipari said after the loss to Missouri. "Well, guess what those eight guys got to do? Play well. All of them. You can’t have four of the eight and get it done."

Where the nine-man rotation seems to have hurt Arkansas the most is in the performances of some of the guys it brought in. Injury aside, Davis' wrist is all good, according to him. But he still hasn't made as big of an impact as was expected in the preseason, as he's averaging just 8.3 points per game on 40.9% shooting and he turns the ball over 1.7 times per game.

"For (the SEC), he's a little bit of an undersized small forward, and that impacts him defensively, rebounding the basketball," Greenberg said. "Johnell's got to try to be more aggressive, but it's hard to be more aggressive when you're playing against the athletes (in the SEC). There's a big difference in the athletes in the American Conference and, especially this year, in the SEC."

That said, with Fland likely out with that hand injury, there's an opportunity for Davis to show his worth. He's averaging 28.4 minutes per game, but he could see himself thrust in a larger role with the Hogs' point guard out.

"What you say is, there's 15 shots to spread around," Calipari said on his radio show Monday. "Who needs maybe three or four more shots of those 15 to get going? Nelly. He's used to taking 17, 18 shots. When you're taking eight, nine or seven, it's a lot harder. So we need to get him more shots."

Even through the Hogs' struggles this season, though, Greenberg said he isn't selling his Calipari stock.

"You don't win National Championships or go to Final Four without knowing what you're doing," Greenberg said. "This is an anomaly, this is out of character for one of his teams. Being that he's done this for about 35 years, I'd say the odds are in Arkansas' favor."

FINAL: Arkansas 39, Texas Tech 26

The Arkansas Razorbacks (6-6, 3-5 SEC) will play in the Liberty Bowl for the seventh time in program history Friday when they take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (8-4, 6-3 Big 12) at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee.

Both teams will look much different than they did in the regular season, as Arkansas has lost more than 20 players and a significant amount of starters to the transfer portal, while Texas Tech will be without both its coordinators, its starting quarterback and its star wide receiver.

"The majority of the kids that are going to play in the bowl are going to be on the team next year, so we are using that as development and belief," Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman said Dec. 12. "Just because you’ve been hiding over in the corner, doesn't mean you can’t play. It’s just somebody that had developed faster, or we had faith a little bit because we’ve seen them do things. I think this bowl prep is going to enhance our football team."

The Razorbacks will have two first-time starters on the offensive line, a whole new group of starters at receiver and redshirt sophomore Rodney Hill is expected to start at running back. Defensively, the Hogs will have a strong group of familiar faces, led by defensive tackle Cam Ball and linebackers Xavian Sorey Jr. and Stephen Dix Jr. in the middle.

Texas Tech will start true freshman Will Hammond at quarterback. The Austin, Texas, native led the state of Texas in passing as a senior last fall with 3,901 passing yards and 35 touchdowns, while rushing for an additional 1,077 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Pittman has led the Razorbacks to a bowl game for the fourth time in five seasons, and to the Liberty Bowl for the second time in his coaching tenure at Arkansas. He is one of only five Arkansas head coaches in program history to lead the Razorbacks to bowl games in four of their first five seasons at the helm.

HAWGBEAT'S PICK

Total points OVER 53 (-110)

When Arkansas last played in the Liberty Bowl during the 2022 season, it hit this over by itself with 55 points in a victory over Kansas. Obviously this is a different matchup with different players, but it wouldn't surprise me to see another back-and-forth high-scoring affair.

For one, Texas Tech's defense ranks 120th nationally in scoring defense (34.5) and 123rd nationally in total defense (451.9), while the Red Raiders rank fifth in scoring offense (38.6) and eighth in total offense (459.8).

Those defensive statistics are especially important because the Razorbacks will be without multiple key players on the offensive side of the ball, so playing against a weaker unit will allow Arkansas to put up more points.

The one concern for Texas Tech is that it'll be without starting quarterback Behren Morton, but Arkansas won't have star edge rusher Landon Jackson or safety TJ Metcalf to make plays in the backend.

It's difficult to predict what will happen in a game when both teams' rosters are in flux, but I lean toward it being a weird, messy, roller-coaster of action that sees the over hit.
