OT 100% NOT the Official Off-Topic/Politics/Corona Thread

They say they're cutting wait times for unemployment benefits (usually 1-2 weeks) so you can get unemployment insurance immediately. That'll go on for 30 days. They've waived the in-person application requirement.

They should do a needs based assessment. My wife and I don't need 2k dollars and it would be supurfluous. With tax season right around the corner, it should be something that is just calculated from your filings.

With the 330 billion alloted, create a portal that is free for US citizens to file their taxes. Based upon your responses, give the amount that would best help families.

Additionally, create a last question asking how much money you could donate. Would be pretty neat to see others helping those that need it the most.

This might be the best idea I've seen regarding this virus.

Far too simple...and MUUUUCH more than 1k per person regardless of income...but yes, like that.

Only 11.5 million people made more than 100k in 2016...so lets say thats doubled just to be generous in 4 years. That would mean approximately 300 million people getting 4k dollars. That would increase the "budget" from 300 billion to 1.2 trillion just off the top line. Then another 46 billion for the second line. Then another 74 billion on the last line.

So you just increased the ask from 330 Billion to 1.3 trillion...or adding a trillion dollars.

I'm sure they have that kind of surplus in the budget

If some kind of universal basic income decision is made to combat the crisis, Mnuchin says it likely won't come until the end of April. If it's still a national emergency after that, more checks will go out four weeks after that.

Do they count my wife and I as one?!? Lol
Doesn't look like it. So if both of you make less than 100k and you got two kiddos under 18...you're looking at 10k based upon his recommendation.

Would be interesting to see whether or not this amount would be taxable. In Texas, you'd be looking at somehwere around 25% of that going to federal, social security, and medicare.

I expect every Republican to reject those checks because "MuH SoCiALiSm"
LOL. Since we're allowing politics on the board now, I expect every democrat to yell loudly at all the Republicans that their privelege does not allow for them to get a check and that not only do they deserve the other person's check, the would like a check for their school loans as well. How could they be expected to pay back the money they said they would pay back.

:)

4 is all? They shared a locker room with a known contagion and only 4 out of 60 tested positive? We need to test errybody

Lol..........

Texas has tested over 1200 people. Can't imagine someone would believe that Texas is batting 1000 on it's test/confirmed case average.
Super odd, that site doesn’t seem to be updating the Texas testing numbers.
Found this elsewhere:
“So far, public and federal labs have tested only 439 people for the virus, according to figures released late Monday by the Texas Department of State Health Services. That does not include “hundreds” more tests conducted by private labs, officials said. That presumably leaves the number somewhere north of 700 people, but The Texas Tribune could not pin down officials on a precise count.”

That is positive. Unfortunately the American population is not the beacon of health
Agreed. But looking at our metrics, and removing Washington as an obvious outlier given their two dozen deaths at a singular nursing home, the mortality rate is lower than Italy even with a smaller per capita denominator of confirmed carriers.
