Yes, I live in Memphis and the hatred for white people is really quite amazing, and scary. God forbid, If there ever is a race war, this place will be ground zero.

I have never seen such hatred for random individuals in my entire life. Maybe its the shock value after I moved from Austin, a very welcoming melting pot of a city. Either way, it is really bad here sometimes.
Dax I used to sell and collect insurance for a living in inner city Little Rock. I spent all day every day around Central High, Battery Street, Roosevelt Ave, Highland Park project, Granite Mountain Project, out by the airport, etc. I went into places that ambulances wouldn't go w/o a police escort. Yeah, I have felt uncomfortable b/c of the color of my skin, but I needed the job. One of the reasons I needed that job so bad was b/c I was at the wrong end of many other job openings b/c I was a white, heterosexual male.

I hate racisim, but I hate the notion that it can only happen in one direction worse. Giving anybody a pass b/c of the color of their skin is blatant racism. Sterling is a pig but Larry Johnson is a pig too. Giving him a pass that for saying something that would get a white guy crucified is about as raciist as it gets.

I lived there for a while last year and I agree. There were quite a few times I felt uncomfortable. I did not like it there at all. Many times I felt like I did not belong or got stared at like "i dare you to look at me". It even happened in my gym there a time or two.

That said, an elderly black man lived next door to me and was one of the nicest men I have ever met. He was a preacher, so its not a shocker to me that he was nice, but he was an awesome guy.

I truly feel that most of the tension now is about 50/50 half being caused by whites and half being caused by non-whites. I think the white racists are starting to dwindle as the older generation dies off, but there is still plenty to go around. I personally hate racism. It is the dumbest thing you can be if you ask me. (a racist) Someone who justifies it from either side is a complete moron, hands down. You can't give the blacks an edge because of slavery either. Slavery has been around for ever and involves many races. I hate that argument too. There is no way around it. People need to man up and shut up. Racism is stupid.

It is complete B.S. that I have to feel weird in a crowd of people simply because they are of a different color, but as much of a non-racist as I am, I still do more than I do not. Growing up in AR probably isn't a good reference point though. Its a very racist State, so I can see where non-whites feel the need to "watch each others backs" here.-so to speak.

Wonder what would happen if Larry Bird or any other white ball player would have tweeted lets have a white only league. IF anyone thinks that racism is a one way street the are dumb. What if someone created a white coaches association. Ill tell you what would happen, Jesse and the boys wouldn't be able to get their fast enough. I grew up in the middle of the Ozarks and I know people that hate other people because the color of their skin, Im not one of them, at all. But I also see that racism goes both ways and the other side never ever gets called out.
You see these TV shoes about blacks not being able to live in Harrison , Ar. Well if I moved to SW Little Rock I would be dead in a weak. Whats the difference?

I don't even know where to start baber. First of all I never took up for Sterling, nowhere did I defend him, and I didn't offer my voice in support of him, and I think the statements he made were deplorable, but you seem to read what you want to into the post. The fact that whatever Jay Z does doesn't bother you just paints you as one of those who thinks racism can only be committed by a white person. Everything else in your post can also be applied to Jay Z. He owns an entity that is attached to a governing body, which in this case is the NBA, and the NBA has the power to control ownership. Seeing as Jay Z is part owner in an NBA team, just what makes his comments and actions about white people any different from those made by Sterling about black people, EXCEPT he's black. Thanks for making my point for me, that some folks think racism is OK, as long as it's committed by a black toward a white. Would really like to know what you think Silver should do to Jay Z, but I'm guessing nothing.

While i do not support what Sterling said and think he is a POS, i think it was way too harsh to ban him from the NBA for stuff he said in PRIVATE conversations. He didn't make a public statement saying that and like has already been said in this thread, his racism has not crossed over and affected his job as owner.

The seventy nine that voted for that stupid survey tell Will Gragg bye for me, you people are making excuses for Sterling WOW!

So you think Will Gragg is as stupid as you? I guess you think similar discussions aren't going on anywhere but here? This poll was about Larry Johnson not Sterling. Nobody has defended Sterling that I have seen, just pointed out the hypocracy of the politically correct.

Show me where one person has defended Sterling.

Living in Memphis area also, and I 100% agree.

Jay-Z is no longer part owner of the Brooklyn Nets and he only had less than 1% share of the team. Please elaborate what racists comments Jay-Z said about whites and this medallion your talking about.

It would be awesome to compare the Phil Roberson threads to these. A lot of people talking out of both sides of their mouth.

Then go dig em up. You're a mod. Wanna clarify what you are trying to imply?

Simply Google Jay Z racist and read what it says about the medallion and the group it represents. Also very informative bit on what Obama thinks about racism. The Five Percent Group is as racist a group as the KKK, and I have nothing but disdain for both.

I frequent and Memphis and I was robbed at gun point. The guy and I both were black. The dangers of Memphis have little to do with race. Poor example.

The country is gone. I think it is time for good men and women to realize that they no longer have a voice in America. I blame the state run media for what is happening in this country. This Sterling guy is Jewish by the way, how many times have you heard that in the covering of this story? He's obviously not a good person. 95 percent of light skinned people would describe him as a racist, and what he said as a despicable. He's a progressive liberal. Have you heard that on abc, cbs, and nbc? But but conservatives are the only ones that are racists bigots right libs? 96% of African American voted for BO. He got the same percentage of white voters as Bill Clinton did, but his detractors are racists. I read everyday on Facebook from my African American friends that he is given a harder time than his predecessors because of his color. It's just ridiculous right now what is taking place in this country. I'm done. Why can't we just call this guy an idiot and move on? But no, it's got to portrayed as this 80 year old Jewish guy is a prime example of how racially divided we still are as a country. The media will make sure of this. As someone who has truly grown up in a diverse background, I've almost had all I can stand. There is no personal accountability left in this country. It's always someone else's fault, and I'm sick of it. And I am someone who is not prejudice, I hate every frickin body equally. Geezus this crap wears me out.

Yes, the BS wears me out, too. Like you, I'm tired of being lied to and manipulated by the powers that be.

What can we do about it all, be it politics or whatever? When it comes to politics, all we can do is vote to throw ALL of them out of office and start over with a clean slate--so to speak. I decided a long, long time ago to be the change that I want to see in the world---to love others and to treat others the way that I want to be loved and treated. That is what I've done. That is how I raised my children to be. We have to start somewhere and that place is with me and with you and with everyone else---as individuals.

Not a poor example at all. The question of "do you ever feel uncomfortable having white skin" was answered. Hopefully the poster who asked the question was enlightened by finding out that yes it does happen.

The whole point of this thread originally was to point out that while racism goes both ways, time and again the heavy handed punishments are dolled out only to the white offenders. It wasn't to defend the white guy. It was to point out that the media bandwagon is only interested in crucifying the white offender, and gives a pass to everyone else. If you agree that it is fair to do that, then I feel sorry for you and everyone else with that stance. It has nothing to do with supporting Sterling, it has everything to do with making sure all sides are dealt with in the same manner.

So gbbaber, how bout Jay-Z? I believe he's part owner of an NBA team, and has publicly voiced his racist opinion of whites on more than one occasion. Hell the guy even wears a racist medallion around his neck while attending NBA games. I'm still waiting for the hypocrites, liberals, other members of the politically correct cult, including President Barrack, to come out and condemn his actions, and still awaiting for the NBA to fine the guy and force him to sell his shares in the team. Only I won't hold my breath.
Wow, I haven't even heard of the Jay Z medallion story until I read this thread. That says a lot imo.

I was the poster and appreciate the responses. I don't doubt that you felt uncomfortable. But, did you experience racism, really? Bigotry?

I used to play a lot of basketball and played a lot of pickup games in DC. We played in some pretty tough areas and I always had a guy or two who wasn't happy to see anybody white there. Most of the guys backed off if they saw you could play but there were always a guy or two who just didn't like you. I got it. Life was tough there and a lot of these guys came from some really shitty situations. I got to know some of them pretty well. I can only speak for my own experiences but I learned that it is not as simple as 'just pick yourself up by your bootstraps'. And, I always felt that I had to prove that I was a good guy. I was coming into their neighborhood to play. I never took it personally because I got it. It wasn't hatred, it was their experience in their life.

Your experiences shape how you view the world. Sorry, but I think it's a cop out to say 'all racism is the same'. It's really hard for white people to experience racism in this country. Equating LJ to Sterling is deflecting from the real issue of bigotry because we are uncomfortable with the topic.

I am now off my soapbox.

The "white victim" act is one of the most arrogant, ignorant, and disrespectful "arguments" that could made. It trivializes and minimizes a real life problem experienced by a significant portion of population. Institutional racism is a fact, these aren't opinions, and some of you mock a phenomenon that negatively impacts millions. I

I don't doubt that you are sincere, but to gloss over racism and more importantly discrimination, doesn't make you a racist but it defies legitimate peer reviewed social science.

By all means pierce, enlighten us on all of your first hand real life experiences that qualify you to speak with authority to or for either side of the issue. Knowing the "Political Correctness" handbook by heart and quoting it often does not really make much of a case.

I don't know about anyone else, but I have definitely experienced this...

I was focused on getting my rap career started only to have stall in progress. I choked in the middle of a rap battle and was booed off stage. I broke up with my pregnant girlfriend, Janeane, and got with my new girl Alex who I met at factory I used to work in.

I realized that my life has remained pretty much the same since I graduated from high school. At first, I considered myself to be a victim of circumstances and blamed others for my problems. Over time, I began to take responsibility for my life and how much control I had over it. I really questioned whether my group of friends, including "Future", were holding me back from moving onto bigger things. I then decided to put my dream of a music career on hold so I could provide for my mother and sister.

My friends would constantly say I was an incredible rapper but we only got to see snippets of my skills. I entered myself into this tournament consisting of three rounds where I had to rap against a member of the "Free World." I won two of the rounds and made it to the final round.

In the the last round I had to battle "Papa Doc" the tournament's most feared rapper. "Papa Doc" knew all my weak points so I had to address them in my freestyle. I used my 'white trash' background and the various inflictions the "Free World" had put upon me. I simply acknowledged the difficult life I had as a springboard to reveal the truth about "Papa Doc" and how he tried passing himself off as a thug but actually came from a privileged background.

"Papa Doc" was obviously left speechless and dropped the mic and backed down. As I exited the venue, my boy "Future" suggested that I should stay and celebrate my victory. He offered me the position that would let me host battles at the Shelter (the spot where we do rap battles). I refused and told him that I needed to get back to work and do things my own way. "Future" accepted this and respected me for it.

I left "The Shelter" feeling more confident about my future.

I would refrain....DaxC has convinced himself that if a white person experiences racism it must be all in their head.

On the other hand Dax, if you would like to visit Memphis and take a stroll with me in midtown and downtown, I can assure you your ignorance would be put to rest.

I agree that there are many examples of discomfort. And, I didn't say it is in your head but I do think it is more socio-economic than racism.

I just think that there is a big difference between inherent racism/bigotry and discomfort or fear.

The stories I have heard only support that opinion. Not being a jerk but interested in examples.

So what im gleaning from Daxc is that ONLY white people can be bigots and racist? Other race's could be prejudice but otherwise its just socioeconomic difference?

Do you really need specific examples to prove racism towards whites is real? really?

Fine...

My girlfriend and I were eating at Sekisui in midtown just a few weeks ago. She is 1/2 native american and I am white. She could easily pass for almost any race....seriously, she is dark and sexy....so freakin hot. Anyways....

We were sitting on the patio and a black guy came up to us and asked for money. I flatly said no, so he proceeded to ask my girlfriend if she would give him some money. Mind you, this man had obviously been drinking....one of the main reasons he wasnt getting a dime from us. After he asked my girlfriend I told him "not today man, we are trying to eat dinner". He just stood there staring at us while we were eating, not leaving, just hovering. I said "dude, leave us alone, go away"

Obviously angered, he looked my girlfriend straight in the eye and and said "you half bred n***** bit**, you and this fu***** wood think you're better than everyone else."

By this time I had stood up and our little waitress girl bolted over. I thought our waitress was gonna kick his a$$. Manager came out and all was over.

Satisfied?

I have many more, some similar, some not. But I am offering you the chance to experience it for yourself in beautiful Memphis. Please come visit me. I will take you out for sushi or BBQ and you can learn for yourself. BTW, i dont know where you live, but is obvious you are VERY sheltered.

DaxC, I just looked at your profile, LOLOL, you live in one of the most affluent parts of the country. Your opinions are no longer valid. Take a look below at the Wikipedia description of your town. Good lord man. I am embarrassed for you. The world isnt flat dude, come outside of your 1mill dollar home....

YOUR TOWN IS 2% BLACK!!! You no longer have a dog in this fight dude. Does a black person even reside within a 10 mile radius of you? Do you know what a black person looks like that isnt on TV?

McLean[/B] is an affluent, [5]

The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.3% [1]

Figures. He and pierce talk the talk and spout the PC company line but clearly neither has any real clue what life looks like away from their world of enlightenment or they would know better than to make such ignorant statements in the name of the almighty political correctness code.

Here is the deal boys. If you, I, or any other white guy harms someone due to skin color, ethnic origin, or religion, we are bigots. If a muslim blows up a bus full of jews, if Nolan calls white folks crackers and honkeys, if Larry Johnson calls for an all black BB league, if an enlightened liberal badmouths Christians, etc., they are bigots too. Whine otherwise til you choke, it's still the truth.

The real irony in all of this to me is that the dax's and the pierce's of the world are actually the most racist. You guys continue to believe that black folks need to be treated differently, need to be protected by you, and need to have different rules simply b/c they are black. Doesn't get much more racist than that.

I guess if someone said there ought to be a white-only league for guys who never get a chance to play in the NBA, they'd be banned.

Dax actually lives in a segregated town, where there are more llamas than there are other races. Not joking

In all honesty, I did not think there were places in this country that had less than 2% black people....How is that even possible? Not by accident I can tell you that! Now that I know, I have to believe that is done by specific design.

It is somewhat disturbing that you reside in that city and feel good about yourself. While at the same time, claiming racism is fabricated because you havent seen it first hand. Of course you haven't seen it directed at you Dax, you don't let other races into your town.....your beautiful little bubble

You should be ashamed to have participated in a discussion under this topic, when your community actively keeps other races out.

You sir, can easily be classified as an ignorant fool. Hell, Sterling might own a house next to you, considering you both have the same general attitude about keeping your distance from black people

You seriously think that a drunk guy coming up to your table and asking you for money is comparable to inherent racism that minorities feel in the world today? Seriously? You think some guy interrupting your dinner at Chili's is on the same level as bigotry. That's your view, and I suspect that you are sincere but I think that makes my point.

I played football at UVA and stuck around the DC area. I am pretty sure that I have seen the same things that you have seen based on your example. McLean is a pretty nice area. Chose it for a lot of reasons but demographics wasn't one of them. Unfortunately that is sad commentary on our world. Now if somebody said that their ambition was that one day have all of the homes in McLean be owned by african american's, I would think that they were trying to inspire young people. But, that would sound a like like LJ wouldn't it?

I might be a fool, but remember, a pretty smart guy once said that the greatest lesson in life is to learn that even fools are right sometimes.

A couple of years ago I would break down this ignorant nonsense point by point, post all the readily available legitimate information that clearly and thoroughly rebukes your misinformed perception of the world...but I won't. I just don't care that much anymore, so "You win", obviously you are extremely educated as it pertains to such matters and I was foolish to attempt to discuss this subject with someone who has studied it so extensively. All the best going forward...

Where in the world did you get any of this from my comments?

My theme is that I find it absurd that people are comparing LJ comments to Sterling's actions.

I studied sociology and anthropology in college and spent a good deal of my time researching race relations in the south. It's still a topic I have a big interest in, and I read a few books a year to dig deeper. Institutional racism is a real thing. There's a difference between calling someone a derogatory name and setting up a socioeconomic system in which only a privileged few can get ahead in life. Yes, we have made great strides as a society, but still have a long way to go. japierce gets it, as do a few others in this thread.

Charles Barkley said it best on TNT the other night. To paraphrase slightly, he said the guys with the pointy hats on their heads who call people names are just idiots, but guys with money and power and the ability to give or withhold economic benefits are racists. Sterling is a racist. I don't care if the man has a black head coach. The man is a racist and if he worked for my company he would be fired just the same.

And above all, what I've learned in this thread is that despite Memphishogs claims that Memphis is the bees knees - it sucks as bad or worse than I originally thought.

Chapter 2 paragraph 6 of the Political Correctness Handbook.

Never let yourself be drawn into a debate you can't win. If cornered, simply state that you are above such arguments and you are not going to waste your valuable and enlightened time debating such an unworthy opponent. Be sure to mention that you have plenty of facts readily available if you ever need them for someone worthy of seeing you flex your intellectual muscles. DO NOT TRY TO ARGUE FACTS.

You've got it down to an art. Much smarter than those rubes who try to pass off left wing studies as facts and hope nobody notices the source. Lucky black folks having brilliant libs like you to protect them by constantly reminding them they can't be living under the same rules as everybody else. You are such a racist and don't even know it.

It would have been fine if someone just wanted money, that situation is easily handled. Apparently, you decided to ignore the rest of the message. That is fine, it is what best supports your argument. Verbally abusing my GF with racial slurs as well as calling me a wood is OK I guess.

I am happy for you, that you will never feel the pain of racism in your bubble. It must be easy to never see a loved one cry because of unwarranted harassment based on race. I feel bad for anyone that goes through that, no matter what race they are. It is simply, unwarranted hate.

You, on the other hand, deserve a slap in the face from reality. You were a privileged college athlete that moved to an an all-white district....yet you think you understand racial tensions because you played a sport with other races. Yes, fools can be right in certain instances i suppose, but that most certainly does not apply to you here.

If you truly believe that we are all equal....than how is inherent racism limited only to whites? I cannot believe someone actually spews that garbage. I guess a sheltered lifestyle can do that to anyone. Thanks Dax, for being a part of a movement that inhibits growth.

Do you think that anybody who believes that racism and bigotry are real are left wing or 'libs' like you say?

In a country where 64% of people are white and white median income is 35% higher than minority median income, I really don't feel that people can truly experience reverse institutional racism.

People make stupid comments and do stupid things. But, that is not structural racism.

Well gosh, I didn't do any college research on the subject. I just have life experience to go by and surely that doesn't count.

Did any of your research include poor white people in America? There are millions and millions of them you know. You think the guys with money and power do anything to help those people? You think poor white folks have any kind of leg up on getting out of poverty b/c they are white? Only difference between them and poor blacks is they don't have laws in place to protect them, no fears of discrimination claims against them, no EEOC laws to see that they get good jobs in the blue collar world. Matter of fact, when special rules are made for minorities to get to the front of the line, it is the poor white folks they are getting in front of.

Sterling is a racist. So is Nolan. So is David Duke. So is Obama. So is Larry Johnson. Racism comes in all forms from all walks of life regardless of color or financial status. The current PC trend of magnifying on one side and ignoring it on the other aint making it any better.
