Brazile has bought in to Cal

That's pretty much all I've got from my observations. But I watched the Tipoff event Saturday and it's clear we're going to see a different, and better, Brazile this season. Fingers crossed he stays healthy. But he's out there now and five others aren't so there's that. Man he looked very good and he won't be camped out on the 3-line all game. There seems to be a good chemistry between him, Z, Adioo.
Also, Wagner and Boogie and going to be boss. I'm fired up. Zimmerman said Fland reminds him of Lee Mayberry, and I concur. He's at least that good.

Arkansas picked to finish 4th in SEC, two Hogs named All-SEC

The Arkansas men's basketball team was selected to finish fourth in the SEC for the upcoming season, plus center Jonas Aidoo and guard Johnell Davis were named preseason Second Team All-SEC by a panel of SEC and national media members.

Arkansas is ranked 16th in the preseason AP poll and is coming off a disappointing 16-17 (6-12 SEC) season under former head coach Eric Musselman in which it missed the NCAA Tournament.

First-year head coach John Calipari's roster features 13 newcomers — six freshmen and seven transfers. The preseason No. 4 selection is one spot lower than last year, when Arkansas was selected to finish third in the SEC.

Aidoo was voted to the second team after transferring in over the offseason from Tennessee, where he averaged 11.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists a season ago. Aidoo was named AP First Team All-SEC and was voted to the SEC All-Defensive Team after finishing third in the league in blocks (66).

Davis also earned Second-Team preseason honors after joining the Razorbacks from Florida Atlantic, where he averaged 18.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game last season on 48.3% field goal and 41.4% three point shooting.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound graduate senior started all 34 games and scored double digits 31 times, including 35 against Arizona. Davis was a key component of FAU's Final Four run during the 2022-23 season, as he was the first player in history to record 25+ points, 10+ rebounds, 5+ assists and 5+ steals in an NCAA Tournament game since steals became an official stat in 1986.

Aidoo and Davis are the 14th and 15th Razorbacks to be named preseason All-SEC, joining Todd Day (1991-92), Scotty Thurman (1993-94 and 1994-95), Corliss Williamson (1993-94 and 1994-95), Joe Johnson (2000-01), Ronnie Brewer (2005-06), Patrick Beverley (2007-080), BJ Young (2012-13), Bobby Portis (2014-15), Moses Kingsley (2016-17) Daniel Gafford (2018-19), Nick Smith Jr. (2022-23), Trevon Brazile (2023-24) and Davonte Davis (2023-24).

The Hogs will face No. 1 Kansas in a home charity exhibition Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. CT at Bud Walton Arena. Arkansas' next exhibition will be a charity game vs TCU on Friday, Nov. 1 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Arkansas' season will officially begin on Wednesday, Nov. 6, when Lipscomb comes to town. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. inside Bud Walton Arena and it will air on SEC Network+.

Arkansas fans will get their first chance to see the Hoop Hogs on Oct. 25, as No. 1-ranked Kansas will come to Bud Walton Arena for a preseason charity exhibition game. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. and the game will air on the SEC Network.

What was once the ultimate platform for a digital newspaper has gone off the rails.

Anybody else? I managed to ignore it for a long time, but the “For You” section has made it unbearable. I toggle to the “Following” tab right away, but can’t block the amount of accounts that post BS to help prevent stuff. The fact that video auto plays makes it all the worse.

Set mine up to follow all Razorback related news and accounts and just opening the app is a risk of seeing something wildly inappropriate or graphic based on the algorithm.

I’ve tried setting updates to minimize the risk, but until someone can present a fix the bad far outweighs the good.

The Arkansas Razorbacks wrapped up their preseason Tip-Off Tour in Pine Bluff on Sunday.

The basketball team had stops in at OZK Arena in Hot Springs on Saturday and at the Pine Bluff Convention Center in Pine Bluff on Sunday. In Pine Bluff, former Razorbacks Todd Day, US Reed, Andrew Lang, Ernie Murray, Ken Biley and Chris Walker were named honorary captains for the event.

The events featured meet-and-greet sessions with players and coaches, a community service event where the team partnered with Samaritan's Feet to pass out 3,000 pairs of shoes and on-court drills in front of fans.

"This program did not start with me," Arkansas head coach John Calipari said after the event in Pine Bluff on Sunday. "This program was what Eddie Sutton did, what coach (Nolan) Richardson did, what the other coaches did. So you want to make sure you're tying everybody into this."

Braylen Russell makes most of opportunity against Tennessee

Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman said after the Razorbacks beat Auburn two weeks ago that true freshman running back Braylen Russell had earned more carries, and the four-star out of Benton made the most of that opportunity in the 19-14 win over the Tennessee Volunteers over the weekend.

Russell was the Hogs' leading rusher on the night, as he ran for 62 yards on eight carries. The most important carries came on Arkansas' final offensive drive, which featured two runs by the Benton High School product.

The first run was a 24-yard scamper that put the Hogs right on the edge of field goal range at the 22-yard line with the clock stopped at the two-minute timeout. One play later, Russell's number was called again and he powered through for another 11 yards on an inside zone play.

One play after that, backup quarterback Malachi Singleton — who was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday — pulled the ball from Russell on a read option and ran it in for what ended up being the game-winning touchdown.

Pittman was all smiles after the game, and said even if Tennessee didn't put up much fight to keep the Hogs out of the end zone at the end of that drive, as color commentator Kirk Herbstreit insinuated, he was proud of the effort by his true freshman running back. Russell chose the Razorbacks over the Volunteers in his recruitment out of high school.

"I thought it was great, especially when we were a little bit out of field goal range and he ran the inside zone," Pittman said. "He got moving, now, and he’s hard to stop. I don’t know if they let us score that last score or not. I don’t know ... But they did a good job and I was proud of Braylen."

Russell's first run on that final drive was the longest of his young college career, and gave the Arkansas offense, which had struggled for much of the night, a spark that helped set off a crowd-storming victory.

The 62 yards he rushed for under the lights against Tennessee are nearly three times more than his previous game-high, which was 23 yards in the season opener against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Pittman said on the radio after the game the offensive line, which has been criticized by the fanbase heavily this season, deserves some credit as well for the way the running backs were able to break free.

"Let’s talk about the offensive line," Pittman said. "We talk about them a lot, so let’s talk positive about them tonight. They did a hell of a job opening holes for Braylen there at the end and they did a really good job all night of pass protection. Tennessee has got some really good players, too. I was really proud of the offensive line."

No one on the coaching staff has seemed surprised by the way Russell is progressing, as Pittman said a few weeks ago he expected the work load to increase for Russell.

"Anytime a guy that you haven't played a lot goes in and has early success, you play him a little bit more," Pittman told reporters Sept. 24. "I imagine his load per game will amp up a little bit more, but we just saw that he was practicing extremely well. We always have believed in him."

The Arkansas Razorbacks are in the midst of their first bye week of the season and will get a chance to rest ahead of a rivalry game with LSU on Oct. 19. Kickoff for that game will be at 6 p.m. CT and it will air on ESPN.

Arkansas' official depth chart for LSU game

FAYETTEVILLE — The Arkansas Razorbacks (4-2, 2-1 SEC) have released the depth chart for Saturday's matchup against the No. 8 LSU Tigers (5-1, 2-0 SEC) at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville.

Arkansas is coming off its first bye week of the season, while the Tigers are riding high after a 29-26 overtime win over Ole Miss on Saturday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The only change in this week's depth chart comes at the kicker position, where senior Matthew Shipley is listed as the starter after redshirt senior Kyle Ramsey exited the Tennessee game with what head coach Sam Pittman described afterward as a significant injury that would keep Ramsey out for a while. Backing Shipley up is freshman kicker Charlie Von Der Meden.

Stay tuned to HawgBeat.com for the latest on which players listed on the depth chart could be out due to injury following the bye week.

Here is the full Arkansas depth chart ahead of Saturday's game against LSU, which is set to kick off at 6:00 p.m. CT at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville.

Kentucky Preseason #23...Interesting

G: A poor shooting defensive first off-guard
G: A career bench shooter who provides no other asset beyond shooting...even though he's very good at that
G: Duplicate of the second guard, but a much worse shooter
F: Stretch 4 with pretty good numbers (probably their best player)
F: 22 mpg back to the basket C who magically grew 2" when he got to Kentucky

Anyone know of a way to short a basketball program's year?

Here's an update on Greg Brooks Jr. He's fighting, once a Hog always a Hog

It's easy to get frustrated with the transfer portal or even when kids simply pick other schools besides Arkansas.. but the most important word in all of that is "kids"...

That's someones kid. Prayers for he and his family. To go from playing 60 snaps opening week to now, whoa.

From this Hog fan I'm pulling for him.

Start at the 6:00 mark

Update on Arkansas' brewing first base position battle

After weeks of scrimmaging against themselves in fall ball capped off with a three-game exhibition series against Oklahoma State over the weekend, the Diamond Hogs still have a position battle brewing at first base.

Arkansas' three main contenders for playing time at the corner infield position — returning redshirt sophomore Reese Robinett, Rhode Island junior transfer Michael Anderson and BYU sophomore transfer Kuhio Aloy — have all showcased different skill sets throughout the fall.

A big-bodied slugger from the northeast, Anderson led Rhode Island in RBI last season (41) and set the NCAA Division I single-game record with 12 RBI against Stonehill on March 20. In two seasons with the Rams, Anderson totaled 23 home runs and a .289 batting average.

According to stats collected by media during the fall, Anderson finished 6-of-32 at the plate (.188) with three long balls, nine RBI and 13 strikeouts. Between him and Aloy, according to head coach Dave Van Horn, Anderson is the better defender.

"Aloy, he's still learning the position," Van Horn said Thursday. "He may end up being an outfielder down the road. Last year, BYU, he just DHed, he didn't really do anything and they signed him as a pitcher, if that tells you anything. So they didn't have him hit in the fall and so he had a lot of time off from swinging the bat, trying to become a pitcher. He had a couple of really good weeks there."

At BYU, Aloy slashed .269/.329/.447 with nine doubles, a triple, eight home runs and a team-leading 37 RBI. He was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, but had a 60-to-32 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Sporting some of the best exit velocities on the team, according to Van Horn, Aloy has still struggled with swinging and missing (13 Ks this fall), but his four home runs and 11 RBIs give him an edge from the plate.

"Last week, it didn't go great for (Kuhio), but he's definitely a threat at the plate and he doesn't get cheated, pretty good eye," Van Horn said. "He's had some really good days and you'll see him this weekend, probably DH a little bit."

Finally, Robinett is the lone lefty of the trio and he impressed as a member of the Marth's Vineyard Sharks NECL Summer League team, as he hit for a .331 batting average with 11 doubles, nine home runs and 32 RBI.

Those offensive numbers have dropped off a bit with the Razorbacks this fall (9-for-37 at the plate, .243), but his experience within the Arkansas program and natural defensive ability make him a promising candidate for the upcoming season. Robinett even played third base in the Diamond Hogs' final exhibition match against Oklahoma State on Saturday.

"Robinett is the best defender, didn’t really have the great fall with the bat," Van Horn said Saturday. "Played outstanding defense, so we’ll get it figured out."

It should be mentioned that while Anderson, Aloy and Robinett are the three most likely options at first base, others could be in the mix as well. Junior college transfer Trenton Rowan played at the position in exhibition No. 3 against the Cowboys, and senior Kendall Diggs may be a possibility once he returns from injury.

Arkansas' 2024-25 baseball season will begin Feb. 14 with a four-game series against Washington State at Baum-Walker Stadium. Be sure to tune in to HawgBeat for updates on all the offseason action.

Trevon Brazile confident, adjusted with new-look Razorbacks

_DSC3437.jpeg

Heading into his third season with the Arkansas basketball team, redshirt junior forward Trevon Brazile hopes to elevate his game under first-year head coach John Calipari.

The 6-foot-10, 230-pound athlete tested the NBA Draft waters at the end of a rocky 2023-24 season, but he opted to return to the program after a chat with Calipari during the offseason. Fans got a first look at Brazile during Arkansas' first Tip-Off Tour event in Hot Springs on Saturday, which was essentially an open practice in front of around 4,000 fans.

When asked after the event what part of his game had improved the most over the offseason, Brazile had a short response — "Everything. I just have more confidence.”

That newfound self-belief will go a long way for Brazile, who averaged 8.6 points and 5.9 rebounds as a redshirt sophomore last season. The former Missouri transfer started the year with seven double-digit performances in his first nine games, but knee problems and bad team play hindered his impact throughout the campaign.

The Springfield, Missouri, native credited his new teammates and coaches for his development over the offseason.

“When I came in, they told me how they want me to play, and how could I not listen to those guys?" Brazile said. "So just trying to go out there and do what they say.”

After grinding through the summer behind closed doors, performing in front of fans brought new juice to what was essentially an open practice, according to Brazile.

“It adds some adrenaline, obviously there’s a lot of people watching," Brazile said. "So you want to look your best no matter what. You always want to look your best, but it amplifies when there’s 4,000 people in the room.”

Even though he's been in Fayetteville for the last two seasons, because of the new coaching staff in town, Brazile said it doesn't feel like the same Arkansas program he transferred to in 2022.

“Obviously I’ve been here for a couple years, but when you have a whole different staff, they do things a whole different way," Brazile said. "It kind of feels like a new program. It’s definitely been an adjustment at first, but I feel like my teammates and my coaches have helped me adjust just fine.”

One of those adjustments has been Brazile's play. During the summer conditioning period, Calipari challenged Brazile — along with his teammates — to have an "attack dog" mentality.

"I mean, his resume speaks for itself, so I just try to do what he says." Brazile said July 29. "This summer I feel like I’ve made a lot of progress with not shooting threes. Just being what he calls an ‘attack dog.’ Just trying to be an attack dog."

The Tip-Off Tour will have its second and final stop in Pine Bluff on Sunday, and Brazile said the chance to get out in front of more fans across the state is something they should have been doing for a while.

“Going around the state, meeting people and playing in front of people that might not be able to get to a game or never see a practice or player in real life," Brazile said. "It’s a good thing for the state.”

Doors for the Tip-Off Tour at the Pine Bluff Convention Center will open at 3 p.m. CT Sunday. The team will participate in a meet-and-greet with fans, as well as a community service project with Samaritan's Feet, before beginning drill work on the court. Be sure to stay tuned to HawgBeat for the latest updates.

Arkansas vs. Oklahoma State (Exhibition No. 3)

The Arkansas baseball team is set to host Oklahoma State for the second exhibition of the week Saturday afternoon after defeating the Cowboys, 8-1, Friday evening.

Head coach Dave Van Horn's pitching staff held Oklahoma State to just one hit in 29 at-bats during Friday's contest, and Diamond Hog pitchers struck out 18 batters with only one walk.

Offensively, the Razorbacks finished 13-of-36 at the plate (.361 batting average) with 10 punchouts, six walks and five extra-base hits. The standout of the day was junior college transfer third baseman Brent Iredale, who racked up four hits in four attempts with one RBI.

Admission and parking is free to the public for Saturday's games. Concessions will be available and no outside food and drinks are allowed except in the Hog Pen. There will be no television or stream option.

“The way we’re going to work it on Saturday, is we’re going to probably play 10 innings, but we’re going to play two 5-inning games,” head coach Dave Van Horn said Thursday. “We talked about this yesterday, and we had talked about it originally when we were making plans to do this, to play a little bit more than nine innings. So we decided to go 10. So at the end of five innings on Saturday, we’ll take a five- or 10-minute break and let them fix the field again.”
