Arkansas RHP Cooper Dossett to miss 2025 season with torn UCL

CR2_2742.JPG

Arkansas baseball head coach Dave Van Horn confirmed Thursday that junior pitcher Cooper Dossett suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) requiring Tommy John surgery that will keep him out for the 2025 season.

A right-hander out of Springdale Har-Ber High School, Dossett appeared in 14 games for the Razorbacks during the 2024 season. He had a 3-1 record, 5.17 ERA, 20 strikeouts and seven walks in 15.2 innings pitched as a sophomore.

Dossett's last appearance was May 18 against Texas A&M and he suffered an arm injury in that game that eventually ended his season. Van Horn said in June that Dossett was in Fayetteville working out and no surgery was needed for the injury. Of course, that has since changed.

"It wasn't completely torn, it was just kind of weak" Van Horn said. "They thought they could rehab it back, and it didn't. It was just too much pain in there and it was bothering him kind of to the point where we went and had it evaluated again and it got a little worse. Just decided to get it fixed."

Unfortunately, Dossett won't be able to get healthy in time for the 2025 season.

"He’s just got to get strong," Van Horn said June 26. "He’s had injury issues since his senior year, the summer before his senior year. That injury was really scary when it happened, he thought he had really torn his elbow, he didn’t as far as we know. That’s MRIs and using every avenue to figure out what up there. I think mentally he’s okay. Now he’s just got to recover and if he stays healthy, he’s going to be really good.

"He throws that cutter and that slider. Fastball is in the mid 90s, bigger and stronger. Great kid, works extremely hard, you couldn’t ask for anything more but when you are a pitcher and your arm’s bothering you, that’s not a good thing. We’ve got to get him healthy and feeling good about it."

The Diamond Hogs are set to host Oklahoma State on Friday and Saturday for exhibition matchups at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville. Friday's game will start at 6 p.m. CT and Saturday's will begin at noon CT. Both exhibitions are open to the public.

Hoops Basketball practice tidbits

For the late night crowd. Ready for updates?

- Karter Knox and Boogie Fland are both shooting at a high clip from outside. This source said they’ve both been “really good” and “should be first round picks with how hard they work and how skilled they are”.

- That is somewhat expected, especially for Fland, but knowing that that is the level they’re playing before the season even begins bodes well for the Hogs

- Knox has dropped 20 pounds since OTE. Getting around better and improved his quickness and athleticism. Source said he looks really good.

- Thiero getting more comfortable on the perimeter. Should be another perimeter threat but lower volume. Coming into his own and is also a more vocal leader on the team.

- looks like we will see Davis, DJ, and Boogie on the floor together at the same time a bit this season

- positionally Davis is a 2-3, Dj and boogie will be 1-2 and play together a lot as well.

- Z has looked great this week and is in way better shape than he has been in the past.

Trio of Razorbacks nearing return, injury at kicker position

Following the Arkansas Razorbacks' (4-2, 2-1 SEC) 19-14 win over No. 4 Tennessee, head coach Sam Pittman gave an update on the health of some of the Hogs' players Wednesday.

On the mind of every Arkansas fan is the status of quarterback Taylen Green, who suffered a left leg injury in the fourth quarter against the Volunteers that left him out for the majority of the remainder of the contest. Pittman said they're hopeful to have Green ready for the Oct. 19 game against LSU, and that Green's injury is "more of a bone bruise" without ligament damage.

RELATED: Arkansas bowl game projections at midseason mark

"We're also hoping that he'll be ready by next week to practice," Pittman said Wednesday on The Chuck and Bo Show. "Those are still up in the air just a little bit. We feel confident that we can have him back, it's just we're not positive that will happen."

Pittman also provided updates on offensive lineman Patrick Kutas and former Florida safety transfer Miguel Mitchell, neither of whom have seen the field this season for the Razorbacks.

RELATED: Arkansas defense performing at high level in SEC play

Kutas received an MRI scan for a back injury Aug. 30 and hasn't played in a game since Nov. 4 against Florida last season, although Pittman said that Kutas has practiced this week. Information about Mitchell's status has been murky through the first half of the season.

"But our kids, we were so beat going into the Tennessee game, so we have got to get some kids back," Pittman said. "That might include (Patrick) Kutas, who hasn't been playing. We hope we get him back. Miguel Mitchell now seems to be healthy and ready to go."

Starting kicker Kyle Ramsey exited the matchup against Tennessee in the second half with what Pittman confirmed after the game as a groin injury. During Pittman's weekly SEC Teleconference on Wednesday, he said that Ramsey had a significant injury that will keep him out for a while. Backup Matthew Shipley will take over kicking duties in Ramsey's place.

"(Matthew) was perfect," Pittman said Saturday. "He made every extra point and every field goal. I was so happy with him, I called him out after the after the game. I called him out with the team.

"I usually don't do much of that, but kid came in there and kicked the field goal and made it 14-13, that's big, to get us into a field goal situation. A lot of guys quit. A lot of guys tuck their head and go, 'Oh, I'm not playing.' He doesn't. He went out there and kept a great attitude and helped us win a football game."

As for the rest of the offense, Pittman said that the team is still waiting to hear back on test results for tight end Andreas Paaske (concussion), but the unit will be close to full tilt Monday with Ty Washington set to return and Luke Hasz healthy. Former Florida State transfer running back Rodney Hill (concussion) is also expected to return Monday, according to Pittman. Hill missed the Tennessee game.

Finally, Pittman said that sophomore cornerback Jaylon Braxton is a possibility to return for the LSU game after previously dealing with tendinitis and a bone bruise.

Arkansas' Head Hog went in-depth on what the bye week will look like for his players before facing the Tigers.

"So, yesterday was a walk," Pittman said. "Film and walk. Monday was also film on LSU. We've got to be strong, got to be prepared mentally. Physically, we don't have to do the banging this week. But mentally, we have to get prepared. Today will be a spiders practice and then tomorrow will be a practice on full pads.

"Then they'll have off Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We'll come back in as a staff Sunday evening to review Ole Miss-LSU tape and see what's new in there and then go for a regular week next week."

Following the bye week, Arkansas will face the LSU Tigers at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville on Oct. 19. That game will kick off at 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN.

Arkansas defense performing at high level in SEC play

One of the main reasons the Arkansas Razorbacks (4-2, 2-1 SEC) are tied for fourth in the Southeastern Conference standings right now is Travis Williams' defense.

The Razorbacks' second-year defensive coordinator, Williams has put on a master class in holding opposing offenses down and not allowing them to get much going. Outside of a few busted plays in the first three weeks of conference play, points have been hard to come by for Arkansas' foes.

In three SEC games, the Arkansas defense has forced 19 punts — three against Auburn, nine against Texas A&M and seven against Tennessee.

RELATED: Carmona, Singleton earn SEC Weekly Honors

The most impressive performance was the seven-punt game against Tennessee. Even after only scoring 14 points against Arkansas last weekend, the Volunteers are still ranked No. 1 in the SEC in scoring offense (46 points per game) and No. 2 in total offense overall with 519 yards per game.

"I just thought Travis did a wonderful job of calling the defensive game," head coach Sam Pittman said after the win over Tennessee. "And more important, getting the kids to believe in what we were going to try to do to stop this very, very, very high-powered offense."

One thing Arkansas did to curb Tennessee's offense was implement a 3-2-6 defense with three defensive linemen, two linebackers and six defensive backs early on. Pittman said another team did it against the Volunteers earlier this season and had some success with it.

"We watched Oklahoma and they had somewhat success," Pittman said. "They held them to 25 (points). With all of that, and then did it fit our schematics? But that’s where it started with, was the tape on Oklahoma, because they’re the only ones that had really done any good at all. The rest of them were in the 50s, 60s, 70s. We implemented some of that because of that."

One facet of the defense that has come along well since conference play started has been the pressure on opposing quarterbacks. In the last three games, the Arkansas defense has sacked the quarterback nine times — twice against Auburn, three against Texas A&M and four times against Tennessee — and forced five quarterback hurries.

In SEC play alone, those nine sacks are good for third in the SEC, behind Ole Miss and Texas A&M who have 11 a piece.

Defensive end Landon Jackson has been a big part of that resurgence, as he's registered 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss in the last two weeks alone. Sixth-year defensive tackle Eric Gregory has also contributed well to the cause, and has logged 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss in SEC play.

RELATED: Arkansas football program, fans united entering bye week

There's still work to be done in that department, but it's an improvement from the first three games of the season, and it's come against much tougher competition.

Through the first three weeks, Arkansas had five sacks and 10 quarterback hurries. Four of those sacks and five of those hurries came against FCS opponent Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Week 1.

A week later against Oklahoma State, the Hogs weren't able to sack or hurry Cowboys quarterback Alan Bowman at all, and against Alabama-Birmingham the Arkansas defense only registered one sack.

The front seven has been strong when it comes to stopping the run, as the Hogs only give up an average of 106.5 rush yards per game, which ranks No. 5 in the SEC this season.

It's worth noting Tennessee and Texas A&M are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the SEC, respectively, for rushing offense; The Volunteers average 266.8 yards and the Aggies average 232.3 yards. Arkansas held them to 174 yards and 134 yards, respectively.

Arkansas' pass defense is ranked 11th in the SEC, as the Razorbacks are giving up 215 yards through the air, but that number has gone down in recent weeks. In conference play alone, Arkansas is only giving up 202 passing yards per game, which ranks fifth in the SEC.

The pass defense has been helped by the play of sophomore safety TJ Metcalf, who ranks second in the SEC with three interceptions, two of which came in the Razorbacks' win over the Auburn Tigers in the conference opener.

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Metcalf also forced a fumble in that game, and became the the first Razorback since Kenoy Kennedy in 1999 to record two interceptions, one forced fumble and two pass breakups in a single game.

Overall, Arkansas ranks second in the league with four interceptions in conference play — all of which came during that 24-14 win over Auburn in Week 4.

The Razorbacks will need their defense to step up again when they host the LSU Tigers on Oct. 19, as LSU is fifth in the SEC in scoring offense (35.2 points per game) and seventh in the SEC in total offense with 468.2 yards per game. Kickoff for that game is slated for 6 p.m. CT and it will air on ESPN live from Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville.

Rumor Mill: Arkansas makes splash with Thomas

Rivals national analyst Rob Cassidy posted his regular rumor mill piece and touched on multiple topics, including Meleek Thomas and Arkansas. Here is the excerpt for that:

ARKANSAS MAKES SPLASH WITH THOMAS

"Arkansas has long been among the front-runners to land five-star guard Meleek Thomas, and last week's visit seems to have solidified the Razorbacks’ position as one of, if not the, most likely landing spot for the Pittsburgh native.

Thomas recently canceled a visit to Alabama. As of now, a visit to Kansas State remains on the schedule for Oct. 26, but the future of that trip seemed a little up in the air as of Sunday afternoon. A cancellation would be extremely positive news for Arkansas fans, as K-State has the financial support and relationships in place to become a threat.

Should Thomas set foot in Manhattan as scheduled, there could be some white knuckle moments in Fayetteville. If not, it might be time for celebration in the Hawgs' recruiting office."

Players announced for SEC Basketball Media Day

Screenshot 2024-10-08 at 11.04.41 AM.png

The players who will join first-year Arkansas basketball head coach John Calipari at SEC Basketball Media Day were announced on Tuesday.

Calipari will be joined by guard Johnell Davis and forward Adou Thiero in Birmingham, Alabama, next Tuesday, Oct. 15, with a time window of 2:30 p.m. to 4:35 p.m. CT.

Both Davis and Thiero are entering their first seasons with the Razorbacks, as Davis transferred to Arkansas from Florida Atlantic and Thiero followed Calipari from Kentucky over the offseason.

Davis is a fifth-year senior who has spent the last four seasons with the Owls of Florida Atlantic. He was a key part in the team's Final Four run in 2023, as he averaged 13.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game that season. In the postseason, he bumped that average to 15.4 points in five games, including an explosion for 29 points in the second round against Fairleigh Dickinson.

Last season, his numbers were even higher, as the Gary, Indiana, native averaged 18.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists per contest. He worked out for several NBA teams after the season ended, but opted to remove his name from the 2024 NBA Draft and play at Arkansas.

Thiero is heading into his third season of college basketball after playing two seasons at Kentucky under Calipari. Last season he appeared in 25 games and averaged 7.2 points and five rebounds per game.

Where Thiero stands to improve the most is in his three-point shot, something he's said has been a focus for him this offseason.

"That will make it harder for defenders to guard me, because they cant just sit back," Thiero said Sept. 12. "When they’re closing out, I can shoot the ball and it’ll go in, so they’ll have to get a hand up and I can beat them off the dribble. With my size, I can get to the rim, finish, with my athleticism I can dunk on somebody.”

Davis and Thiero are two of seven transfers on this year's team, which only features one returning scholarship player from a season ago — junior forward Trevon Brazile.

The Arkansas Razorbacks are currently in preseason practice and will take the floor for preseason charity exhibitions against Kansas inside Bud Walton Arena on Oct. 25 and at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, against the TCU Horned Frogs on Nov. 1. Be sure to tune in to HawgBeat for updates on the Hoop Hogs ahead of season tip-off.

Arkansas stat leaders through 6 games

Going to run this as a homepage story sometime over the next few days, but no point in making y'all wait for it

-------------------

The Arkansas Razorbacks (4-2, 2-1 SEC) have reached the midway point of their regular season and they are riding high off a 19-14 upset win over the Tennessee Volunteers in Fayetteville.

Through six games, the Razorbacks rank 41st nationally in scoring offense (33.0 points per game), 13th in total offense (484.8 yards per game) and 8th in third down conversion percentage (52.8%).

Defensively, the Hogs rank 34th in scoring defense (19.2 points allowed per game), 39th in total defense (321.5 yards allowed per game) and 33rd in third down conversion percentage defense (33.3%).

Quarterback Taylen Green, who suffered a left leg injury in the win over Tennessee, ranks third in the Southeastern Conference with 1,502 passing yards on the year. Green's five interceptions are second-most in the league and his 56.6 completion percentage ranks 16th, but he's also 8th in the conference with 326 rushing yards despite taking 13 sacks so far.

Utah transfer Ja'Quinden Jackson ranks 4th in the SEC with 566 rushing yards and second with 10 rushing touchdowns, making him the fastest Arkansas player to the 10-rushing touchdown mark in a season since Madre Hill rushed for 10 touchdowns through the first five games of 1995. Jackson leads the league with 99 carries to this point in the year.

Receiver Andrew Armstrong checks in at No. 2 in the SEC with 552 receiving yards on 38 receptions. Oddly enough, Armstrong is the only FBS player with 35+ receptions or 500+ receiving yards and zero touchdowns this season. Ole Miss' Tre Harris is running away with the league lead, as he's caught 52 passes for 885 yards.

Linebacker Xavian Sorey Jr., a Georgia transfer, ranks 6th in the league with 40 total tackles, which is just one behind former Hog and current Ole Miss linebacker Chris "Pooh" Paul Jr.'s 41 tackles.

Cornerback Marquise Robinson and nickel Doneiko Slaughter are both tied for 6th in the SEC with four pass deflections, although the Arkansas Athletics official stats also has safety TJ Metcalf credited with four pass deflections as well. Metcalf is tied with Texas A&M's Marcus Ratcliffe for 1st in the SEC with three interceptions.

Starting punter Devin Bale ranked second in the league with an average of 48.1 yards per punt, which checks in just behind South Carolina's Kai Kroeger (48.3).

Kicker Kyle Ramsey is 7-12 on field goals and his 58.3 field goal percentage ranks 14th out of 15 qualified SEC kickers. Ramsey does have a longest field goal of 51 yards, which he hit in the Sept. 14 win over UAB.

Ramsey did hurt his groin in the win over Tennessee and he was replaced by Matthew Shipley, who hit a 23-yard field goal and nailed the only point after touchdown attempt he had.

Below are the team stat leaders, plus a look at who leads the Hogs in Pro Football Focus numbers.

Arkansas' season stats, PFF grades through 6 games

From @RileyMcFerran

At the midway mark of the season, Arkansas (4-2, 2-1 SEC) has a much-needed bye week to rest up and refocus before closing out its 2024-25 campaign.

Head coach Sam Pittman's squad began the year with a 70-0 blowout over Arkansas-Pine Bluff at War Memorial Stadium before losing in heartbreaking fashion, 39-31 (OT), at then-No. 16 Oklahoma State in Week 2.

The Razorbacks rebounded in less-than-stellar fashion with a 10-point home victory over UAB, and then started SEC play by knocking off Auburn, 24-14, at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Arkansas then lost the final Southwest Classic at AT&T Stadium, 21-17, to then-No. 24 Texas A&M.

Arkansas shocked the college football world over the weekend when it defeated then-No. 4 Tennessee, 19-14, behind a remarkable defensive performance from Travis Williams' bunch.

Through those six games, Arkansas finds itself improved compared to last season in most offensive and defensive statistical categories. The Hogs boast three top-25 offensive and five top-50 defensive categories.

Logan Schram sets commitment date

4-star OL Logan Schram just finished up an OV here last weekend and is announcing his decision Sunday.

It’s between Arkansas, TCU and Texas Tech. He took OV’s to the other two schools in April and May. I like the Hogs here but he’s also got a ton of connections to Texas Tech, who is the biggest threat.

Taylen G

Still has some of his normal misses but I thought he played his best game so far. Stood in the pocket and made some really good throws. I didnt get to watch every play because we had baseball tonight but what I did see the misses were way down. Threw behind sategna on big play but he made the catch. Other than the Teslaa wide open he never saw and the Anthony short throw I don’t see much to be up set about.

TAKEAWAYS

1. Isaiah Sategna reliable in the pass game

Isaiah Sategna's production has seen a tick up since the start of conference play, as the speedy receiver has 14 catches for 184 yards and a touchdown in three SEC games.

Against the Volunteers, Sategna made five catches for 72 yards with a long of 23 and consistently caught them while in traffic. This development is big for the Razorbacks, who have been far too reliant on Armstrong to move the ball down the field.

2. Taylen Green poised when protected

When he receives time in the pocket, Taylen Green has shown the ability to make high-level throws. I think back to the picture-perfect dimes to Armstrong along the sideline or the bullet to Tyrone Broden in the fourth quarter.

Against Tennessee, Green completed 19-of-27 throws for a 70.4% completion percentage, his highest of the season. More importantly, Green didn't put the ball in harm's way, which allowed the Hogs to have sustained drives to run out the clock.

3. Andrew Armstrong an NFL prospect

It was already time to start talking about Armstrong as an NFL prospect, but the more he continues to put up stat lines like he did against Tennessee — nine catches for 132 yards — the higher his chances become to play at the next level.

Through five games, Armstrong has made 38 grabs for 552 yards but surprisingly zero touchdowns. Despite not playing in the season-opener against UAPB, Armstrong is on pace to eclipse the 1,000-yard receiving mark this season.

Following Arkansas' (4-2, 2-1 SEC) 19-14 win over the No. 4 Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday at Razorback Stadium, two Razorbacks earned weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference on Monday.

Arkansas redshirt junior left tackle Fernando Carmona Jr. and redshirt freshman backup quarterback Malachi Singleton earned recognition from the SEC office for their performances.

Carmona was named SEC Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week after securing the edge against a talented Volunteers defensive line, which recorded a season-low two sacks during the contest. According to Pro Football Focus, Carmona earned a 60.4 offensive grade and an 84.0 pass-block grade versus Tennessee.

It's the second time of the season that Carmona has been named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week (Aug. 31 was the previous), and he is the first Arkansas offensive lineman to win an SEC weekly award multiple times in a season since Ricky Stromberg in 2022.

Singleton was named SEC Freshman of the Week after scoring the game-winning touchdown with 1:17 minutes remaining against the Volunteers. The former four-star completed 2-of-3 passes for 31 yards and rushed four times for 15 yards while stepping in for injured starting quarterback Taylen Green.
