Thoughts after Ole Miss

1. GO HAWGS! WPS! Winning is hard but we still got it done! Proud of the entire program for last night and how they’ve played the first 4 games overall.

2. This bye week could not be timed better. We’re really beat up and this extra week is going to really help us going forward. We’ll get Boyd and Burks back 100% as neither were yesterday. You also bring back Bumper, DG, and Buster back from injury which definitely improves all 3 levels of your defense and also helps your special teams. You also rest Grant Morgan and Catalon and Hudson Henry too and get guys that have played a ton of snaps just a ton of treatment.

3. Barry Odom. That’s it. He’s coaching out of his mind and so is the rest of the entire coaching staff.

4. Offensively we’re really close to finding our identity. Boyd being healthy is a big part of that. As good as Trelon Smith has been, his style is a complimentary style to a slasher. He’s a guy that gets touches after and D has been tackling a guy getting to the second level at full speed trying to stop home runs and them smith comes in and makes guys miss and gets tough yards and changes pursuit angles. Need them both but Boyd’s the bigger key. Also need Hudson in a big way because his ability as a receiver opens up the flats and middle of the field. He would of made that catch Kern missed in the end zone in the first half. He gives you another passing game threat to go with Burks and I think we need one more WR to emerge in the same game. Either moving Burks around some to find ways to get him and Warren going together or involving Woods, Knox, or Tyson Morris more. More weapons used in the passing game the better we’ll click in the running game with Boyd slashing through even boxes.

5. The OL is fine. There’s concerns about movement in the running game and that will come but they’re protecting their butts off and will continue to get bigger and stronger and used to moving SEC guys and will be fine. We’re legit going to have 4 of those 5 guys the rest of this year and 2 more years after. That’s outstanding.

6. Special teams took a step forward. Yes they pulled off a fake punt but we had a guy in position to make that tackle and he didn’t. Probably was getting held but regardless we had a chance to stop it. And with all the injuries and guys hopping in unexpected roles, special teams depth is taking more hits than either O and D because you use players from both O and D on that unit. Punted well yesterday, no missed kick attempts, and the one kickoff out of bounds seemed to be a result of the wind.

7. There’s still a ton of room to get better and everyone in the building knows it. We’ve yet to have a game with a 100 yard rusher. Out of the 5 DEs we’re confident in playing, ones been out since game 1, ones back in a hand cast, one missed time due to grades/injury, and so the other 2 have played a ton of snaps in Williams and Gregory. A&M we should have all 5. We should have Bumper and Grant both healthier than they’ve been and Hayden and AP both backing them up. Secondary will return Buster. What if we can consistently have Burks get his touches and have two other players with 5 catches? We’ve got room to get better with this roster this year.

8. Excited for the rest of the year and once again Go HAWGS. I’m planning on breaking down some A&M tape and posting my notes one day this week.

Franks question

I know this is far fetched and there is a lot of football left. Is it possible that Franks realizes at the end of this year that he is not going to get drafted. They finish the year well. Can he come back next year, with the thinking that he had fun this year. They are trending up and I have one more year to make it. I believe he is 24 but would be a 5th year senior?

Good Pub on ESPNU First Team

Greg Mac wasn’t on today but from Danny K and the other dude:
  • Morgan top defensive performance
  • Clark is best story in football
  • At this point, Wouldn’t put ani there DC ahead of Odom; Give him the Broyles Award
  • Regardless of anything else, Pitt should be COTY
  • We would beat Auburn AGAIN if we played at home or neutral field
  • Arkansas passes the eye test
  • Not shocked if we beat aTm
  • Could legit finish 2nd in West

Football Three Hogs named to FWAA Freshman All-American Watchlist

Arkansas redshirt freshmen DB Jalen Catalon, DB Hudson Clark and OL Brady Latham have been selected to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-American Watch List, the organization announced Tuesday.

Catalon leads all FBS freshmen and ranks fourth overall averaging 11.3 tackles per game, while his 45 total tackles are second among rookies. The Mansfield, Texas native also leads the SEC and ranks fourth nationally averaging 7.3 solo tackles per game. In Arkansas’ 33-21 Week 4 win over Ole Miss, he became the only SEC player since 2000 to have at least nine tackles with a fumble recovery and an interception return for a touchdown. A starter in all four games for the Razorbacks, the safety has recorded at least nine tackles in every game and set a career-high with 14 at No. 13 Auburn. Also, he has broken up two passes and forced one fumble. Catalon is the first Razorback freshman to record 45 tackles in a season since Dre Greenlaw posted 95 over 13 games in 2015.

Clark is the nationwide freshman leader with three interceptions and is tied for first among all FBS players. Making his second career start against Ole Miss, Clark turned in one of the most memorable Razorback performances of late, becoming the first freshman in school history to intercept three passes in the same game. His three picks are tied for second-most in a game in school history and third-most in conference history, while becoming the first SEC freshman to intercept three passes since Mississippi State’s Darren Williams in 2003 against Troy. The walk-on was named SEC Freshman of the Week for his performance against the Rebels. Clark is also sixth on the team and fourth among defensive backs with 14 tackles on the season.

Latham has started all four games at left guard for the Razorbacks earning a PFF offensive grade of 69.3, the highest among Arkansas offensive lineman who have played at least 250 snaps this season. He also ranks third on the team in PFF’s pass blocking grade (77.6) and run blocking grade (68.1).

The Razorbacks return to the field against Texas A&M on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 6:30 p.m. in College Station. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network and the ESPN App.

Football NCAA c̶o̶n̶s̶i̶d̶e̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ allowing sub-500 teams in bowl games

The Division I Football Oversight Committee recommended waiving the requirements for bowl eligibility for the 2020-21 bowl season Thursday.

To be eligible for a postseason bowl, a team must meet the criteria to be considered a deserving team, which is generally defined as having a .500 overall record against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. The Football Oversight Committee’s recommendation would eliminate that requirement for the 2020-21 season. For the 2020-21 bowl season only, postseason games could be played Dec. 1, 2020-Jan. 11, 2021.

Schools must continue to meet Academic Progress Rate requirements for postseason eligibility.

The committee’s recommendation requires approval by the Division I Council, which is scheduled to meet Oct. 13-14. The recommendation recognizes the impact of COVID-19 on the 2020-21 playing season.

“Providing a more flexible framework for the postseason in this unprecedented time will provide some certainty moving forward,” said Shane Lyons, director of athletics at West Virginia and chair of the oversight committee. “These are important postseason opportunities for our student-athletes, and this will help everyone to prepare.”

Nick Carparelli, the executive director of the Football Bowl Association, added: “The Football Bowl Association appreciates the efforts of the Division I Football Oversight Committee in recognizing the need for maximum flexibility this bowl season.”

After Party w/ Coaches

I had the opportunity to hang out with a couple of our coaches and their families last night after the game. It wasn’t as much an “After Party” as it was just a few families hanging out.

First of all, we are blessed to have the coaches we have here right now. They are good dudes. They are having fun, just like our players. They all respect each other and it’s very obvious in the culture we are seeing developed among our football program.

I’m not trying to share any earth shattering info and debated posting anything because I am a conservative poster but got some tidbits and comments straight from the guys who do it every day and thought you may appreciate it. I’m not going to share names either but I will say the were position coaches from both sides of the ball.

Soli wasn’t the only guy who blew chunks yesterday. The other was Burks. They think it was a reaction to the shots he’s been getting in his knee. They didn’t even know if he was going to play yesterday. He was definitely not 100%.

Coates wasn’t taking care of class work. That’s why he was left behind for MSU game. He’s a changed guy now and that shouldn’t be a problem moving forward.

Recruiting never ends. Those guys spent a lot of time texting. Recruits are fired up. Some text our coaches more than they text them.

They want guys on campus now. They are confident that if they can get kids on campus they can recruit with anyone.

They also needed the Bye Week. I’m sure they look the same after every game, but they were worn out last night. They said it couldn’t have come at a better time. They know they have a 6 game stretch to end the season and it won’t be easy.

On walk-ons playing and making plays...They have talent on this team. The next man up mentality has been strong.

They agree that Catalon is a stud but one of them didn’t think he’d make it after watching him last year.

There is a lot of teaching going on and the guys are taking it all in.

Against Ole Miss they knew they would play fast so they kept it simple. They only had 2 sets/3 calls up front the entire game.

Sam never spoke Chad’s name last week and the kids didn’t need to hear it.

Marshall is the real deal and probably the only true SEC guy they have up front.

And for all you guys who are down on Fountain, I had to ask about Special Teams. There was absolutely no hesitation in the response. “Scott Fountain is the best ST Coach in the country”. I know that won’t deter any mud slinging towards Scott but now you are disagreeing with guys who actually know.

Lastly...One said it’s pretty obvious that Boyd and probably Frank’s too, are playing not to get hurt.

Again, nothing earth shattering here but I thought I’d share.

Just don't get trying the HUNH offense with this offensive personnel...without Spring Ball we couldn't

implement it or master the concept and when we try to go quickly the play usually blows up 1/2 the time...our game plan should be to maximize your teams chances of winning...go fast if it is to your advantage (rarely this season) otherwise stand at the LOS, make sure that everyone is aligned properly, confirm what play you want to run from the sidelines, eat some clock, and execute the play properly...against Ole Miss it was as if our goal was to get their offense on the field as much as possible and didn't even attempt to establish a running game and control the clock...let's get more efficient with each offensive possession and double the # of 1st downs and limit our disastrous punting game while giving our depleted defense more rest on the sidelines.
