Football HawgBeat's 10 Thoughts from the Weekend: Oct. 12, 2020

1. Ole Miss's offense is a problem - Nikki

Ole Miss may rank dead last in total defense so far this season, giving up a whopping 723 yards and 63 points to the Alabama Crimson Tide, but their offense looks like it can keep them in any game they play this season. They didn't mess around with two quarterbacks on Saturday and it looks like they'll stick with Corral passing and Plumlee just coming in to run. Matt Corral threw 21/28 with no picks and ran for 40 yards too. They run the ball a lot with either Corral or Plumlee and Jerrion Ealy or Snoop Conner. They have the 24th best rushing offense in the country right now, averaging just below 200 yards per game. I imagine they'll pick up the 200 pretty easily versus Arkansas based on what we saw this weekend. Elijah Moore, Jonathan Mingo and Kenny Yeboah have all put up 100-yard receiving games far. By PFF grades, Ole Miss's offense ranks 5th in the SEC through three games. Their weakest point has been offensive line play. The Rebel offense has also been pretty clean so far with just one pick thrown by Corral. He ranks 3rd in the nation with a 76% completion rate. The Rebels are also 7th in the nation in 3rd down conversion percentage at 55%.

2. ..... its defense is not - Hutch

Thankfully for the Razorbacks, Ole Miss’ defense has more holes than Swiss cheese.

Through three weeks, the Rebels are giving up 51.7 points on 641.3 yards per game. Opponents are averaging 8.8 yards per play - which is nearly a first down. All of those marks are by far the worst in the country.

It seemed like Arkansas finally figured some things out against Auburn, so if it can keep that going against Ole Miss, we could be in for a wild shootout - which would be par for the course with these two teams.

What the Razorbacks can’t afford to do is get off to a slow start. Another three-and-out on the opening possession or five straight punts could put them in too big of a hole to dig out of because of how efficient Ole Miss is on offense.

3. RECEIVED VOTES - Nikki

Hutch wrote his column on Sam Pittman returning respectability to Arkansas football and what's better affirmation than the Hogs getting votes from coaches (and SIDs) in the polls. Last week was the first time they've received votes since 2016 in the USA today coaches poll. They got just vote this week despite such a harrowing performance against Auburn but as Pittman has been saying..... It's just the beginning. Since moving to Arkansas ahead of Chad Morris's first season, all I've experienced here are sad, often embarrassing losses. But not anymore!

4. Yes, Arkansas got screwed - Hutch

And not just once, either.

The officials screwed up by blowing the play dead when they did. I’m willing to give them somewhat of a pass on that, though, because I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a backward spike the way Bo Nix did Saturday. Still, it’s always best to let the players play it out and then fix it on replay.

Speaking of replay, I initially wondered if they might not award Arkansas the ball because there wasn’t an “immediate” recovery. The officials are blowing their whistles and waving their arms to signal the end of the play long before Joe Foucha fully possesses the ball. I have seen several fans on Twitter say “but we got it within 2 seconds!” Well, two seconds is a long time in football. However, a respected former official has come out and said that the continuing action by players should have been enough to override the early whistles and give the ball to Arkansas.

Finally, the SEC statement was garbage. It referenced the “immediate continuing football action” discussed above, which in one expert’s opinion actually happened. Plus, the officials making the call during the game didn’t actually give that explanation. There was no mention of there not being an immediate recovery when the ref made the announcement and, when asked about it afterward, Sam Pittman did not say that’s what he was told.

Long story short, the Razorbacks got screwed.

5. SEC Opening Lines - Week 4 - Nikki

Auburn (-3) at South Carolina
Kentucky at Tennessee (-7)
LSU at Florida (-13)
Ole Miss (-2) at Arkansas
Texas A&M (-7) at Mississippi State
Vanderbilt at Missouri (-16)
Georgia at Alabama (-5)

I had a fine week three of betting but doubling down on Florida for no reason other than I don't believe in Jimbo Fisher... was a mistake. I also foolheartedly thought Mike Leach would get his squad together for a comeback week against Kentucky and boy, was I wrong. TWO POINTS. Miss State threw for four more interceptions than they did points on Saturday. Completely embarrassing. And now, in classic Leach fashion, he's saying the team's full of bad apples that need to hit the road. Just two weeks ago, he was loading up a bandwagon...

I came out +86.57 in week three so I'm up $330 this season.

Will Old Piss

Have the best offense we will have seen so far this season? Matt Corral looks pretty good, Ealy and Conner are 2 very capable backs, and Elijah Moore is no joke. Plus their tight end, can't remember his name, seems to be having a pretty good season. I know their defense is as terrible as it has been for a while, but their offense scares me more than Awburns did.

Arkansas should claim last night as a win.

This is an egregious screwing by the SEC office and its officials. IMO, we need to give the SEC the middle finger and take credit for this game. Tell the SEC we aren't going to take this anymore.

We need to draw as much attention to this as we can. Screw the fines, set up a go fund me. It needs to stop, 26 years of this crap.

Austin Cook

Former Razorback golfer Austin Cook continues his hot streak on the PGA Tour.Either by a Monday qualifier or a sponsor's exemption Austin got into 4 tournaments.Last week,he needed a top 10 finish to qualify for this week' RBC Canadian Open.Today, standing on the 16th tee,he needed a birdie, birdie, birdie finish to finish in the top 10,and earn an invite to the Quicken Loans tournament next week, and he pulled it off. This young man could be in med school right now,but these 6 figure checks might keep him on the golf course for awhile.

Winners and losers - Week 3 - SDS

Winner:

Sam Pittman
The Razorbacks made a heck of a hire. No, they did not win Saturday against Auburn. But three games into his first season, Pittman’s team has shown more fight than the previous two Razorback head coaches managed in their entire tenures. It might not mean a ton in win-loss record improvement in 2020, but the future is bright in Arkansas, and that’s something that hasn’t been said in a few years.

We lost due to an inadvertent whistle

The SEC can take it’s “immediate recovery” BS and shove it up it’s ass next to its “we didn’t want to make teams play back-to-back seasons” explanation for why they made the Covid schedules the way they did while putting Florida in our schedule 2 seasons in a row.

I’ve always looked down at fans who want to go to the Big 12, but man it couldn’t be more obvious that the SEC hates us. Absolutely zero respect as a member. When the stated logic of decisions they make are in direct contradiction of what they did with us, it’s obvious that we don’t factor into their decision-making. When a senior member of the conference is in a tough spot, we will pay for it every single time

Almost missed with the other horrible officiating from the game is the constant left foot/right foot spotting of

the ball depending on who the officials want to win...I defy anyone to review the game play by play and watch when the umpire spots the ball for the next play...on average they gave AU and extra 30(+) yards and subtracted a minimum of 30(+) yards...on one drive in the 1st quarter the spot went from 3rd and less than a yard to 3rd and 2 but we were in such a hurry to line up and run a bad play our coaches didn't pay attention

It’s time

It’s time to move forward. Yes, the Hog’s and their fans got dry f*cked by the officials last night but the Hogs also had self inflicted wounds. With that being said that’s last week and now it’s time to go beat Ole Piss. Gotta get our heads back straight and focus on this week. Ole Piss showed their grit last night. Now let’s go show ours and let’s show this first 3 weeks of the season is no fluke. This is a team to be reckoned with and respected. GO HOGS!!

ST was the difference

If our ST were better and if we would not have chased points early, we would have won that game. At worse, that FG would have ties the game and we go to overtime.

I am proud of our Hogs though. They played tough, they will hurt from the loss but get stronger and have much more confidence going into next week.

What I had hoped for at the beginning of the season was to get better every game regardless of win or loss and that's what we've seen so far

Can TJ Hammonds get a block?

I’m sure several posters on this board are getting tired of seeing TJ Hammonds tough the ball because we go straight backwards every time he gets a play, but if you have actually watched the plays he’s gotten the ball this season (I’ve counted like 6 or 7), every time we call a play for him, we miss several blocks and he’s having to make people miss several years behind the LOS. He hasn’t had the ball in space a single time. Whether it’s poor play design, or we should be calling an audible out of his jet sweep plays due to the defensive alignment, our blockers simply aren’t giving him anything to work with.

I wish we would get a slip screen for him like we did with Trelon Smith yesterday. We know TJ Hammonds is a problem in space. We just have to actually get it to him in space. Just getting it to him on a sweep when he’s running directly into 2 defenders as soon as the ball is in his hands isn’t helping and it’s not doing him justice for what he can do for this team
