How do you grade Moz so far. Particularly this off season. To be honest I don't think he has done a very good job and it's not because we lost Heyward to the Cubs. (When you bid more money and lose the player there are other factors at play, i.e. he wanted to play for Madden). My beef is this: our needs for RF, 1B, 2 bullpen guys, and a middle/back end starting pitcher have been known since before the end of last season. Yet here we sit with guys getting signed and the clock ticking. I just think JM should have had his targets picked out and ranked in order to be able to move quickly once a particular target player is off the board. We apparently made a run at David Price. Ok. But shouldn't we have had a parallel negotiation going with a Mike Leake knowing that Price was low odds for us?
It's like he can only work on 1 big deal at a time. Oh, we lost Heyward now we start from scratch with Gordon or Davis. I am in no way advocating panic or overpaying guys for their production. I just would like to see some aggressiveness and hunger displayed in the process. I see lethargy. For example we have the budget - the bullpen upgrade could have been tacked down by now while we worked on all the other stuff. Well it's not and a number of high end bullpen guys are off the board now. We may not end up upgrading at all. Card commentators have bragged incessantly about the new found "financial flexibility" we have this year with the new TV deal. Again I don't think Price was worth that money or Heyward either frankly. I'm just steamed that we haven't moved on crisply from those guys to execute a plan based on an agreed to pecking order. Thoughts?
