FB Recruiting Maumelle DT Nico Davillier talks Hogs, recruitment

Someone mentioned to me that if LSU came calling, he'd give them a serious look. We'll see if that happens, they've already got one in-state DT commit and have offered another in the top 250 + 9 other out of state offers

FB Recruiting South-Central Spotlight: Five top uncommitted QBs

Texas actually offered Weigman this morning so little tweak to Sam's piece since then. Braedyn Locke was offered by the old staff but is certainly on-radar, Orji was also an old staff offer but I'm not sure how much they're recruiting him now

30. FELEIPE FRANKS, ARKANSAS
There were a couple of instances of Franks making the wrong read and missing a big play against Florida in Week 11, but overall, he continued to shine from the safe confines of a clean pocket. Franks now ranks 12th in the FBS in clean-pocket passing grade, but as soon as you get him out of that structure, he falls apart.

He ranks near the bottom of the barrel in pressured passing grade at no. 72 among 89 qualifying FBS quarterbacks. The pocket presence just isn’t there for the grad transfer, either — he has converted pressure into a sack on 26% of his pressured dropbacks, the second-highest rate in the SEC. He has also invited the most pressures of any quarterback in the conference with 15 and leads the FBS in sacks taken with nine.

Coach O with nice words about Arkansas

"
Orgeron thanked Pittman publicly for the private call and expressed his fandom for the Razorbacks – just not this week.

“Here’s what he wanted to tell me: thank you for paving the way for line coaches to be head coaches,” Orgeron said. “I rarely talk to any other coaches in the SEC. Maybe sometimes (Ole Miss coach) Lane Kiffin and I talk.

“I consider us friends. There’s a mutual respect between (Pittman) and I. It was my first Division 1 coaching job at Arkansas. I learned a lot from Ken Hatfield. I’m going to see him before the game. I’m glad to see Sam Pittman bringing it back. Obviously when we play them I’m not a fan, but I’m a fan of Arkansas. Arkansas is a great place.”

VERY EARLY Hogs Hoops Eval

After seeing one regular season game against Texas on a neutral site… here are a few VERY EARLY observations. I know it’s early, but just one person’s thoughts:

1) Young, but talented- yes, we all knew this would be the case. We have some real athletes with real potential.
2) Decent Basketball IQ- It does appear from a maturity standpoint that a few of these freshmen / young players are embracing the reality that they will need to be immediate contributors. Isaiah Joe seems to be ready NOW, but others also seem to be ahead of the curve in terms of bball IQ.
3) Could be lacking a ‘go-to’ scorer- again, another thing most people were expecting.
  • While Big Dan is going to get his fair share of points on alley-oops, transition buckets, put backs, etc., he is not a back-to-the-basket scorer and does not look like he’s made much progress in this area from last year. I’d expect 14-17 points a game from Gafford, but he’s not going to be our go-to-guy when a bucket is needed late in the game. It was pretty apparent down the stretch vs UT that this team lacks an identity in crunch time.
  • Isaiah Joe appears to be a guy who could average double-digit points, but I’m not sure he’s really a ‘creator’ either – more of a jump shooter who will get his shots in the flow of the game.
  • Jalen Harris and Mason Jones bring some type of edge to our game, but they probably aren’t going to fill the shoes of Macon and Barford.
4) On the other hand, we may run a better offense than prior seasons- while we don’t have the same type of creators / 1-on-1 guys like Macon and Barford, this team seems to understand their roles. There is much less standing around and waiting on the guards to shoot a pull-up three or chew up the shot clock from dribbling around the perimeter. This could actually prove to be a positive when we play against teams that have shut down defenders.
5) Intangibles are there- this looks like it could be a mentally tough team. Defensive and rebounding intensity are hard to teach, but this team seemed to bring it the other night. We look to have guys who are real winners on this team. Hopefully this is maintained throughout the long season, because this is what should help win some of the closer games down the stretch.
6) This team needs to be coached- we lost a lot of production from last year’s team. We also lost a lot of veteran experience. Coach MA has never been known for trying to out-strategize the opponent (as evidenced by ending games with 2 or 3 timeouts left), but this team will need more hand-holding (especially early in the year). Friday’s loss to UT, the lack of a foul at the end of regulation, ending OT with a sub-par offensive possession and an unused timeout are all things that can (and hopefully will) be corrected.

Not claiming this year’s team to be a sweet-16 contender yet, and after one game it’s definitely a mixed bag of takeaways. With the inexperience on this team, we are in for an up-and-down type ride, but there are clearly some encouraging signs early.

Round 1 saw decisive victories all around except for Tarantula Hawk vs Bullet Ant. The voting margin was slim with Tarantula Hawk barely beating out Bullet Ant for a spot in our Elite 8. We had another upset as well, with Mantis taking home the convincing victory against the Botfly.

Things to know to inform your vote:
1. Murder Hornets: Literally murder anything it feels like. 4 inches long, razor sharp mandibles, and a poisonous sting.

2. Funnel-Web Spider: Most venomous spider in the world. Can reach the size of a Tarantula but with poison that'll kill in minutes.

3. Cockroach: Stupid high defense stats...can survive nuclear explosions.

4. Killer Bee: Poor man's Murder Hornet, but has higher agility stats.

5. Titan Beetle: Bulky with a 4 inch long pincer that can snap a human finger in two.

6. Warrior Wasp: It uses disciplined and calculated attacks dealing the most painful sting in the insect kingdom. Twice the size of a paper wasp with 10 times the stinging power.

7. Tarantula Hawk: Huge with a powerful sting, but is held back by it's lack of aggression.

8. Mantis: Truly the biggest dark horse on this list. Low agility will be its downfall, but it can deliver a knockout if the challenger doesn't take it seriously. Attack stat is sky high.

We're doing great folks, onto the next round we go.....
