Football Minor changes for coin toss, sideline

The NCAA announced a few temporary pandemic-related rule changes for football aimed to “help mitigate risk of contamination and enhance a safer return to play for all participants without affecting competitive equity.”

First, the sideline area where football teams are expected to stand has been extended to the 15-yard lines. Ordinarily, teams must stand within the two 25-yard lines.

Another change involves the coin toss. For the 2020-21 season, the coin toss will involve only four people: two officials and one captain from each team. Under ordinary circumstances, the NCAA allowed up to four captains per side, as well as media members or ceremonial captains to be involved in the coin toss.

There is simply no rational basis for this decision by the SEC.

So now the virus can discern the difference between conference and non-conference opponents ?? Uh, I don't think so. They should have started the season as scheduled w/o a hitch, have as many games during the day as possible to utilize the germicidal UV light from the sun, and enforce the wearing of masks to all indoor spectators. Added precautions should include taking the temperature of all those who enter and the use of hand sanitizer upon entry as well. Switching to a 10 game schedule within the conference is just nuts.

FB Recruiting HawgBeat Big Board Notebook: July 27, 2020

https://arkansas.rivals.com/news/hawgbeat-2021-target-big-board

CAN YOU BELIEVE it's almost August???

The Razorbacks have *Never* had this many commits by the end of July. I know it certainly makes my job easier when there's so few spots left but we can never know enough about these guys and I can start focusing on the 2022 class more as well, so the work continues.

With 17 commits (18 with Crawford), the Hogs are just 7 away from a full class. They'll need a few guys to transfer to take a full 25 but that usually works itself out.

Now that Arkansas has Landon Rogers back, we have the answer to the one-or-two QB debate.

Still need:
1 WR
1 TE
1-2 OL
1 DT
1 DE
1-2 DB

We'll see how they prioritize needs as they continue recruiting. Could they take another, potentially older LB instead of a 5th lineman? Do they need another DT? If the young guys show out this season, maybe not.

Last week, there were 103 prospects left undecided. Now there are 97.
Only a couple came off the actual big board this week. Two guys from Louisiana committed to other schools, TE Shield Taylor to Stanford and DE Byron Turner to Florida State. Taylor had said he'd have some interest in visiting after he was offered but I never heard much about in-depth interaction with either guy.

Hogs are good at QB and RB. They're in solid position for Ketron Jackson and Jayden Thomas at WR though I'm not sure how close Jackson really is to a decision. He was spotted in a Longhorns shirt this weekend at a showcase.

Three different offensive linemen cut their lists and included Arkansas this weekend. I'd call the Hogs the favorite for one of them, Houston-area OL Remington Strickland. It's the most impressive offer on his list and he talks to the staff frequently. Still an outside shot with Rayshaun Benny, hopefully he can hold out to make a visit but who knows when those are happening. I would be pretty stunned if they got a visit from Utah top 100 lineman Kingsley Suamataia--he's got 10 different futurecast picks all in favor of Oregon. But even if they don't get them, I don't think Arkansas would even be in conversation with guys like that without Coach Pittman and Coach Davis.

I want to catch up with Landyn Watson this week, I think he's the most promising of the DE group right now.

The best thing about this is the staff doesn't have to rush to fill the remaining spots. With how few there are they could probably put some pressure on and get more commitments but they're in a spot where they can afford to wait on some of the higher profile guys.

The Razorbacks did offer a couple new prospects last week that we should watch out for:

Hoops Catching up with Moses Moody

Kinda weak but the UA posted this Q&A with Moses

What were some positives from being in quarantine?
After two years at Montverde in Florida, I was able to spend time with my family before I started my freshman year in college.

What were some creative things you did to do your workouts due to the pandemic?
My workouts included running up and down the stairs at our home and putting up shots at the park.

What was something you missed about basketball during this time away?
I missed out on the national tournament. (Note: Monteverde Academy was the consensus #1 team in the country and the favorite to win the eight-team, GEICO Nationals. Oak Hill Academy, featuring fellow Razorback freshman KK Robinson, was a potential participant as well.)

What are your hobbies outside of basketball?
I like to play ping pong and I want to learn to play tennis.

You are playing your ultimate fantasy game, who is your team?
My team would be LeBron James, Devin Booker, Derrick Rose, Joe Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal.

If you had a prepaid credit card with no limit, what things are first on the list?
I would like to get my mom a boat and I want to be able to put my people in positions to succeed.
