This has been talked about a little bit but how long do we really expect to have our Big 3 coaches all things considered? The best case scenario is Sam turns the program around and goes down as a really great hire, bringing us back to national relevance. With the likeliness of that in question, one thing that isn't is the turnover of coaches at all levels of football. My random thought today currently revolves around developing coaches and creating a "coaching tree" from within. Three focuses of that are first Sam retiring after this job and the possibility of promoting Kendall Briles into the role of Head Man. He'd be a younger hire, familiar with the program, and have plenty of coaching connections to rely on including pops. Second promoting Justin Stepp into the role of OC with play calling duties. He'd also be a hire that's familiar with the program, excellent recruiter and brings that element to any staff, and also has familiarity of concepts with at least 4 different strains of the spread concepts with the main two being the Briles' Veer-and-Shoot strain and Gus's 100looks1run strain. Lastly promoting Rion Rhoads into the role of DC. He'd be a more experienced hire that has time spent as a DC and HC at the junior college level, have been around one of the more multiple defensive minds in Barry Odom, and also have time in the SEC coaching the middle of the defensive unit he'd be chief of game planning for. What are you guys thoughts on having potential coordinator hires already on staff vs searching for a completely new scheme? And of course this all revolves around success with Sam.
