OT 100% NOT the Official Off-Topic/Politics/Corona Thread

Well, you might be surprised but no I wouldn't have said that. I could not care less how late Donald Trump stays out. Those curfews are designed for the citizens/protesters to get home safely.

Well it's not like I disagree with Trump 100% of the time. I even sided with him earlier in this thread when it involved the Twitter stuff.

It's just for every 1 thing I agree on, there's 15 new things daily I don't agree on. And 90% of that is caused by him because he can't stay away from opening his mouth/Twitter for longer than 30 minutes.

He wouldn't be in this mess if he could just keep his mouth shut.

No you missed the point. I was trying to point out that it would be exceedingly hard to tell exactly how they felt about this particular incident by using such a broad based reading as an approval rating. So many different things go into an approval rating, none of which are as insignificant as a single photo op that you and others are blowing out of proportion, but you are depending on it to tell you if his religious right supporters would approve or disapprove of the photo op? Seems futile.
Ok, we can tally up how many of the Christian right leaders speak out against it. Right now I have the tally at 0 but would love to be proven wrong.

If you don't think clearing out a peaceful protest so the president could do a photo op/video of him with a bible in front of a church is not big deal, that is fine. Had he stood out there and said a prayer of unity and peace. A prayer for those affected by the pandemic, by the riots, by the looting, by the death. But he didn't do that. He used the bible and that church as a way to repair his broken ego from the story of him hiding in the bunker. That is a move of a small, broken man.

If I wasn't a religious person maybe I wouldn't find it a big deal either. Personally I find it highly offensive. It is just the way I was raised. But I am not sure you could ever convince me that a stunt like this would be defended by the Jerry Fallwell Jr's of the world had it been Mr Obama or even Mr Bush.

I am not hear to tell you that you need to feel it is a big deal. Or that you should not support Trump bc of it. What I am saying is that it is ok to say when a bullsh*t move is a bullsh*t move. You can still be a supporter of the president and call his ass out from time to time. I promise you that he doesn't have undying loyalty to you, so don't feel the need to have it for him.

There it is.

So to summarize, you have no idea how many, if any, religious right leaders agreed or disagreed. Nor do you have an efficient, accurate way of knowing. But you're damn sure that they wouldn't agree if someone else did it. Just because, well, because you're sure of it. Got it.

This is the problem at hand that seemingly will not and cannot be solved. Each side only sees it from their perspective that supports their confirmation bias.

Because it has been shown that most Americans can‘t think for themselves and believe everything they read and hear on TV, this divisiveness will continue to threaten our democracy.

Those who are in the middle and can see both extremes are ridiculous, Trump has implemented some good policy but is a complete social ruhtard, agree that George Floyd's death was beyond abhorrent and police brutality is an issue, but that looting, stealing, arson, and the shit show going on right now is bullshit... are left to wallow in no man's land and are letting these GD extremists on both sides ruin it for everyone!

It seems you are calling me an extremist and I'm not sure why exactly (surely it's not just because you disagree with me), but I get your overall point. We all suffer from confirmation bias and slew of other heuristics. We are not designed to be rational, but that also does not necessarily mean that there is no such thing as a valid opinion or point of view. Right and wrong still exist, but it's easier to feel right than it is to think critically. I question myself all the time wondering if my concern and views are both true but overly amplified through an echo chamber. I, personally, try to guard against it and am at least cognizant of it. To the extent people CAN think for themselves, I try very, very hard to do so. I'm guessing much harder than most. It takes significant effort, forces you to get our of your comfort zone and can be uncomfortable, so most do not.

This nails it. It’s sad that we’ve had the candidates we’ve had the past decade or so. But if you’re telling me Biden is going to change things...(insert joke about selling a bridge in Brooklyn).

I'm wondering If this turns into a witch hunt on cops and actually makes the country less safe in the process. Want better employees? Offer more money and more incentives. Just like other industries

So you are triggered by Trump carrying a Bible but seem to be ok with these destructive riots. Tells me a lot
Yeah gassing peaceful protesters for a photo opp shows what a good Christian he is. Did he sign any Bibles afterwards? Asking for George Will.

crickets on what "this mess" is
crickets on explaining why the photo ops are different. Is a photo op not a photo op?

Lots of crickets for dicktales.

I answered you above. It doesn't matter though. You obviously have a Trump statue sitting in your bedroom that you stroke every night. No matter what I say(or anyone else in this thread), you're just going to say the opposite because you get off on being different.

It's cool, I still love you.

Yes, all of the above(except for the re-election hopefully).

He's bungled everything he can so far in regards to the virus and the riots.
Disappointing answer. "He''s bungled everything" with nothing else. Thought I taught you better?

Was your chance to shine. Now you're in a mess............ just because I say you are. No proof or examples, just speaking it into existence. Like CNN.

I mean, I've spent the last 50 pages or so posting tweets and articles detailing why he hasn't been a great leader the last couple months.

It is my opinion that he's done a bad job.

No it's clear that I've failed you. I will try to do better. We should probably drink a handle or so before we do our training though.

Not sure how I would be able to get a read on all Christian Right leaders but the ones I have looked into are silent as a mouse.

I found the below poll. Most appear quite seem quite dissatisfied with his handling of the protests. While not addressing this classless stunt specifically it does indicate that a large swath of his Christian Right support is not happy

Trumps speech yesterday before the "photo Op". At the end, he said he was going to pay his respects to a very special place.

Reporter to trump, “is that your Bible?”
Trump replies, “it’s a Bible.”

My question is, what kind of a question is that? Who cares if he owns a bible as long as he protects the rights of religion, which he has done. Thats why he has the support of evangelists. Its not because they expect him to be a shining example of Christianity.

On a side note, if he had answered that atrocious question with a simple "yes", most here would have called him a liar. Im not sure what difference it makes, anyways

What Presidents haven’t “respected the rights of religion” in modern history?

considering separation of church and state is pretty important.

Go look up past Presidents “showing respect” to St Johns. Quite a bit different than holding up a Bible upside down and taking a photo. As the leaders of the church have said, tear gassing people so you can take a photo is the exact opposite of showing respect to a place like St Johns.

Exactly, i wonder if they owned a bible? Im certain none of the others were asked this question.

You guys are wondering why so many people support the guy, its because he hasnt been treated fairly since before he was elected. That bothers a lot of people. None of the past presidents, at least in my lifetime, have been treated the way this guy has been. Yes, he says stupid things, we havent had a president that hasnt. Anyways, wonder why he has such staunch support, thats the reason imo

Well we elected a reality tv star who says stupid things on a daily basis, so yeah he’s going to be treated differently.

The cops are saying no tear gas was used, they used smoke after asking the protesters to move back 3 times. They werent going to allow Trump to walk through the crowd, for good reason. Im sure people take pics in front of that church all the time, its a historic place. Who are you to say how he pays his respects. Did he muck it up for the camera a bit? Sure, hes a president, the most powerdul man in the entire friggin world, hes a narcisist, as anyone would have to be to desire to be president. We know your morals are beyond reproach, you have reminded everyone of that numerous times in this thread, but mocking faith is a place i wont go, its dangerous waters if youre a believer. If you arent a believer, find some damn respect or something better to do with your time

I’ve been waiting on someone to post what happened.

No tear gas was used. Trump didn’t say go after those people. I guess I’ll find it and link as to what happened.

if you think Trump is a believer, you’re blind. Can’t recite scripture, cheated on all 3 wives, and ran fraudulent charities and universities.

He’s a con man.
