Biden headed to Texas Tuesday to speak with Floyd's family... I wonder why Trump won't visit?

Like Biden is visiting for any reason other than to gain votes. Come on. Not that I blame him. I’d do the same thing. But hard to act like it’s sincere when he’s had five decades to make changes and has come up with nothing.

Nobody knows the real meaning why he's going. With that attitude, why does anyone visit someone after they have lost a loved one?

Point still stands. In the eye of the public, going and visiting with the family > tweeting from the White House bunker.

because it’s a loved one??? How many other funerals of non family/friends has Biden been to in 50 years? Probably the same amount Trump has.

I have no way of knowing every funeral he's attended. He's been a public figure for the majority of his adult life, I imagine he's attended hundreds of funerals for people he doesn't know.

And it doesn't matter to me if he does it as a publicity stunt, I'm sure the family appreciates him being there. I just thought it was interesting they'd invite Biden, but not the President of the US.

Not ignoring it at all. It’s personal choice. I wouldn’t want Biden at my brother’s funeral. You find that interesting? Or about as obvious as Floyd’s family wanting Biden there?

Biden is a career politician that is simply trying to score points with his voting base. It’s his version of staging a photo holding a bible. Neither of those things should work, but they do.

I have no idea if he’s the best president ever for black people. I’m not a historian. But he’s done every bit as much as the guy before him. And that’s being kind to President Obama.
 
I’ve mentioned this before. I was in the Carter archive in January looking for something else but came across the attached. It’s a summation by the Carter administration of Biden. It praises him as a politician and notes that he was antibusing. Now busing was a complex issue, and I would have agreed with Biden in 1979. But busing was also an important issue for those pursuing civil rights.

People change over forty years. But when you run for president, everything is on the table. I’d like to see him address it.

The budget was balanced in the late 90's but then came 9/11, more big tax cuts, and a search for those elusive weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and poof there goes the surplus.

You know what’s humorous? When a guy complains about us not finding weapons of mass destruction and later uses the guy that lied about the presence of those weapons and caused the fruitless search as some sort of ammo against Trump.

Make up your mind.

Wolves are about to get fat on the sheep. I hate it for the officers and the citizens there but might be a blessing in disguise. People have been asking for it and I bet there about to get a big dose of reality.
Not to mention another 800K out of work, its a great idea........

Section. 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

I would say getting rid of the protection of the law is in direction violation.

Can't imagine what that will look like. What part of the recent riots and looting when there were no police make them think that no police is going to work out? Guess they think you could grab those young men that shot and killed that 77 year old retired St. Louis cop before they did it and tell them they are being bad boys and they would stop?

Copy and paste in spoiler from Bloomberg article four days ago that talks about Camden, NJ. They didn’t abolish policing, so the terminology being used is a misnomer. They disbanded their particular police department and started over by creating a new one with the county itself. Their new force is now double the size of the old one but focuses on de-escalation training, “non-crisis” interactions (the police just hang out with the community more generally it appears), heavier use of body cameras, have an increased awareness of the socio-economic status of those being policed, and have more specific guidelines on what is allowed and on accountability.

The transformation began after the 2012 homicide spike. The department wanted to put more officers on patrol but couldn’t afford to hire more, partly because of generous union contracts. So in 2013, the mayor and city council dissolved the local PD and signed an agreement for the county to provide shared services. The new county force is double the size of the old one, and officers almost exclusively patrol the city. (They were initially nonunion but have since unionized.) Increasing the head count was a trust-building tactic, says Thomson, who served as chief throughout the transition: Daily, noncrisis interactions between residents and cops went up. Police also got de-escalation training and body cameras, and more cameras and devices to detect gunfire were installed around the city.

While many departments define “reasonable” force in the line of duty vaguely, Camden’s definition is much clearer. The department adopted an 18-page use-of-force policy in 2019, developed with New York University’s Policing Project. The rules emphasize that de-escalation has to come first. Deadly force—such as a chokehold or firing a gun—can only be used in certain situations, once every other tactic has been exhausted. “It requires that force is not only reasonable and necessary, but that it’s proportionate,” says Farhang Heydari, executive director of the Policing Project. Most important, “they’re requirements. They’re not suggestions.”

An officer who sees a colleague violating the edict must intervene; the department can fire any officer it finds acted out of line. By the department’s account, reports of excessive force complaints in Camden have dropped 95% since 2014.

Like most matters of policing, however, Camden’s success story isn’t that simple. Members of the police force are now more likely to live in the suburbs than in the city of Camden, according to the local NAACP chapter. “Ninety percent of Camden’s population is minority—we have a lot of young individuals who don’t look like us that are getting these jobs,” says Kevin Barfield, the chapter president.

The higher number of officers on the streets was uncomfortable at first, says Nyeema Watson, Rutgers University at Camden’s associate chancellor for civic engagement, who helped connect the new department to local youth in its early days. “You felt that this eye was on you. It took me some time to adjust to having [police] cars stationed on major thoroughfares,” she says. “That still raises the hair on my neck sometimes, but I know their approach is an attempt to say ‘We’re here, we’re visible.’ ”

In a 2015 report, the American Civil Liberties Union praised Camden for its reforms but noted a “significant increase in low-level arrests and summonses.” The department says it’s mindful of overpursuing petty offenses. “We know when we police a city that has 30% of the residents under the poverty line, a $400 speeding ticket or ticket in general would be absolutely devastating financially,” says Dan Keashen, a spokesman for the Camden County Police Department.

Community organizer Ayinde Merrill and other activists are pushing to create a civilian review board for cases in which force is used. Merrill says the May 30 march felt co-opted by police and city leaders: “We didn’t feel as though the police were truly standing with us. If you’re truly standing with us, come and march with us in plain clothes.”

As some activists call for cities to defund the police, Camden’s reforms are more incremental in nature. “I think the challenge is that you have 18,000 police departments” in the U.S., says Thomson. “It’s an industry that generally is averse to any type of change. The only time change comes is when it’s compelled.”

I think he suspected the evidence was not really that strong but he testified anyway. He was not the president. He was being the good soldier.

Regardless this side discussion is a good distraction from the fact that Republicans are jumping off of the sinking ship. MAGA hats will be a collector's item after November 3.
