After a strong start to the season there seems to be a lot of people ready to kick Vanover to the curb. I’m not sure why the opinions on him have done a 180 on him so fast. He’s literally had 1 bad game (really, really bad) and others ranging from okay to great. If you read the game threads you’d think he can’t play at all. Vanover’s strong showing in
Hutch’s article on +/- seems to have been ignored.
He was rightly pulled very quickly today, as an up and down game is not suited for him. His transition defense is about as bad as it gets. And I’m not sure what to expect the rest of the season on his 3 point shot. He’s tailed off a lot from 3 the last handful of games.
He had an absolutely dreadful game against Missouri. He was far from the only one.
Look at his game log and other than the ORU game you’re going to struggle to find many bad games otherwise.
If you dig further into the stats he starts to look even better. He has 4 TO’s on the season. Not a misprint, 4 TO’s in 234 minutes of playing time. Jaylin Williams had 4 TO’s in 14 min against Tennessee.
Maybe you think his stats were aided by a weak non conference schedule and can’t play against SEC teams? Coming into the game he had the 2nd best (Notae is 1st btw) PER in conference play. PER weighs heavily on offense. So maybe he’s weak defensively? Vanover is 1st in Defensive Rating in league play. Again, that’s without today’s game. I expect he’ll be 2nd behind Williams as we had good defensive numbers today.
He’s also the best rebounder on the team. He leads the team in rebounds per minute on the season, and SEC play (if you take out Smith’s 13 min before getting injured vs AU). He has the best hands I’ve ever seen on a 7’3” guy. If he gets his hands on a rebound it’s his.
Anytime you’re a big that rebounds, defends without fouling, and don’t turn it over, you’re going to play. If his 3 is falling he’s a real problem. Williams has more potential, and will eventually pass up Vanover in the depth chart. It may have even happened today. But those ready to kick Connor to the curb are WAY off. If Williams plays consistently well the Williams / Vanover rotation at C is really strong.
I’m not quite sure why the negativity has so far out-weighed Vanover’s actual play. Even Jimmy Dykes, of all people, has gone overboard on criticizing CV. Vanover went for 17 and 5 against Auburn and Dykes seemed disgusted with him the entire game. I hope people will start giving some slack.
So I’m sure he’ll have another Missouri level stinks now that I’ve gone through all this trouble.
