1. GO HAWGS! WPS! Winning is hard but we still got it done! Proud of the entire program for last night and how they’ve played the first 4 games overall.
2. This bye week could not be timed better. We’re really beat up and this extra week is going to really help us going forward. We’ll get Boyd and Burks back 100% as neither were yesterday. You also bring back Bumper, DG, and Buster back from injury which definitely improves all 3 levels of your defense and also helps your special teams. You also rest Grant Morgan and Catalon and Hudson Henry too and get guys that have played a ton of snaps just a ton of treatment.
3. Barry Odom. That’s it. He’s coaching out of his mind and so is the rest of the entire coaching staff.
4. Offensively we’re really close to finding our identity. Boyd being healthy is a big part of that. As good as Trelon Smith has been, his style is a complimentary style to a slasher. He’s a guy that gets touches after and D has been tackling a guy getting to the second level at full speed trying to stop home runs and them smith comes in and makes guys miss and gets tough yards and changes pursuit angles. Need them both but Boyd’s the bigger key. Also need Hudson in a big way because his ability as a receiver opens up the flats and middle of the field. He would of made that catch Kern missed in the end zone in the first half. He gives you another passing game threat to go with Burks and I think we need one more WR to emerge in the same game. Either moving Burks around some to find ways to get him and Warren going together or involving Woods, Knox, or Tyson Morris more. More weapons used in the passing game the better we’ll click in the running game with Boyd slashing through even boxes.
5. The OL is fine. There’s concerns about movement in the running game and that will come but they’re protecting their butts off and will continue to get bigger and stronger and used to moving SEC guys and will be fine. We’re legit going to have 4 of those 5 guys the rest of this year and 2 more years after. That’s outstanding.
6. Special teams took a step forward. Yes they pulled off a fake punt but we had a guy in position to make that tackle and he didn’t. Probably was getting held but regardless we had a chance to stop it. And with all the injuries and guys hopping in unexpected roles, special teams depth is taking more hits than either O and D because you use players from both O and D on that unit. Punted well yesterday, no missed kick attempts, and the one kickoff out of bounds seemed to be a result of the wind.
7. There’s still a ton of room to get better and everyone in the building knows it. We’ve yet to have a game with a 100 yard rusher. Out of the 5 DEs we’re confident in playing, ones been out since game 1, ones back in a hand cast, one missed time due to grades/injury, and so the other 2 have played a ton of snaps in Williams and Gregory. A&M we should have all 5. We should have Bumper and Grant both healthier than they’ve been and Hayden and AP both backing them up. Secondary will return Buster. What if we can consistently have Burks get his touches and have two other players with 5 catches? We’ve got room to get better with this roster this year.
8. Excited for the rest of the year and once again Go HAWGS. I’m planning on breaking down some A&M tape and posting my notes one day this week.
