Baseball Arkansas Baseball Portal Intel: New Names Emerging for Diamond Hogs

What a difference a week makes for the Arkansas baseball program. In HawgBeat's transfer update seven days ago, questions loomed on the Razorbacks' recruiting approach with only one commitment. Now, Arkansas has three portal players locked in with other potential pledges on the horizon.

After landing the brother of current Hog shortstop Wehiwa Aloy in BYU two-way player Kuhio Aloy on June 7, Arkansas has added Florida Gulf Coast freshman outfielder Charles Davalan and Milwaukee junior outfielder Carson Hansen.

RELATED: Kuhio Aloy could help Arkansas more than just at the plate

Head coach Dave Van Horn has also received commitments from a handful of JUCO athletes, including Florida Southwestern State outfielder Justin Thomas, New Mexico J.C. infielder Brent Iredale, Coffeyville C.C. infielder Carson Schrack, Crowder C.C. outfielder Kolton Reynolds and Seward County C.C. infielder Trenton Rowan.

The Razorbacks fell victim to the wave of offseason fluctuations as well, as outfielder Hunter Grimes entered the transfer portal on Friday.

Transfers to watch:

USC Upstate OF transfer Koby Kropf.

After visiting Arkansas last week, TCU transfer outfielder Logan Maxwell took a trip to Ole Miss and confirmed to HawgBeat that he plans on taking a few more SEC visits before making a final decision.

A 5-foot-10, 185-pound soon-to-be senior, Maxwell finished the 2024 season with TCU's second-highest batting average at .335. He added 12 doubles, two triples, three home runs and 25 RBIs across 170 at-bats.

Another name that HawgBeat can confirm has talked to Arkansas' staff is East Carolina standout outfielder transfer Bristol Carter, who holds the Razorbacks and specifically hitting coach Nate Thompson in high regard. Since our last update on Carter, Arkansas is still viewed as a competitor in his recruitment and potentially even a finalist.

Editor's Note: Carter reportedly committed to Auburn on Monday morning.

Fans of the Diamond Hogs are begging for some power pickups from the portal, and Arkansas may be on one in USC Upstate outfielder/catcher Koby Kropf. The No. 155 overall transfer prospect finished with a .352 batting average but added 20 home runs and 21 doubles to his resume in 2024.

He told HawgBeat that he is considering the Razorbacks, has talked to the staff and will potentially take a visit should things work out.

The final new name added to the list is Houston freshman outfielder Ace Reese, who checks in at No. 110 after slashing .278/.395/.506 with eight doubles, four triples, seven home runs and 34 RBI. HawgBeat can confirm contact between Reese and the coaching staff.

As for updates on known targets, Jacksonville State third baseman Brennan Norton and Sam Houston State outfielder Malachi Lott are in wait-and-see mode with the Hogs. Stetson outfielder Kyle Jones also told HawgBeat that he currently has Arkansas outside of his list of finalists.

Other nuggets:

Toledo CF Garret Pike.

Note: The following tidbits of information are deemed as nuggets because, well, they're small and potentially insignificant in the grand scheme of things. However, there's always a chance that players here become one to watch, so why not talk about them now?

Finding information on pitchers connected to Arkansas has been a difficult task, and it wouldn't be a surprise if one committed out of the blue. A name that fits the bill is Long Beach State left-hander Myles Patton, who accumulated a 3.26 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 66.1 IP last season.

The No. 98th overall portal player was followed by Arkansas pitching coach Matt Hobbs on social media early in the process, so keep an eye on him going forward.

Memphis outfielder Pierre Seals is confirmed to have been contacted by the Razorbacks, but the staff has likely moved on over the last few days.

Toledo center fielder Garret Pike is one of the best players currently in the portal after hitting .360 with 21 home runs in 2024, but he's considered an MLB Draft lean as of now. Should he return and the Razorbacks still need help at the position, watch Pike closely as he told HawgBeat that he's heard from the coaching staff.

A potential backup shortstop option has also heard from Arkansas, as Tennessee Tech transfer Tanner Shiver told HawgBeat that he is "definitely interested in playing for the Hogs." He slashed .296/.388/.559 with 12 doubles, four triples and nine home runs last season.

Yurachek on Arkansas' NIL funding: 'We need a grassroots effort'

Arkansas vice chancellor and director of athletics Hunter Yurachek is currently traveling across the state with select coaches for the ONE Razorback Road Show, which is a bus tour to allow fans the opportunity to hear from those leading the athletics program.

It's no secret that a big part of events such at the Razorback Road Show is to help raise funds. In today's college football era, a big part of the fundraising effort is for Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) funding.

Yurachek did an interview on "The Morning Rush" with Tye Richardson and Tommy Craft on Wednesday and provided some clarity on just how much the athletic department is having to spend on NIL per year.

"It's a seven-to-eight figure number, without putting a specific figure on it, that is what is being spent in NIL across your football, basketball, baseball and women's basketball programs in the SEC," Yurachek said.

ALSO READ: Pittman sheds light on raising NIL funds for Arkansas football

With the hiring of John Calipari as men's basketball coach April 10, the Razorbacks were all over the national news cycle thanks to reports of Tyson Foods chairman John Tyson reportedly making a large financial commitment towards NIL funding for Calipari's team.

While Tyson explained in a recent podcast interview that he didn't just write a big check and call it good, he is going to be helping out. That specific reporting might be something that has hurt the Razorbacks, or at least there has been an effort to clear it up.

During Calipari's introductory press conference, Yurachek made it clear that Arkansas still needs help with NIL funds from everyone, and he reiterated that Wednesday morning.

"We have a great top-end donor base at the University of Arkansas," Yurachek said. "People that have been incredibly generous families that have been incredibly generous to us. But if we're going to be successful year after year in the name, image and likeness programs and compete in the SEC, we need very much a grassroots effort.

"We need people across this state regardless of their means, whether they can give $25/month, $50/month, $100/month. If we can get 10,000 people to be a member of our Arkansas Edge NIL collective and give something consistent every month that we can plan for, that's how we're going to be successful. That's how other programs have been successful in this NIL game."

Part of the need for fans to help out, Yurachek said, is because a lot of the bigger donors are seeing their money go towards facility renovations.

"We just can't from person to person say somebody else is going to take care of that for us," Yurachek said. "We still have some facility needs. The renovation at Bud Walton Arena we have to have in addition to our soccer stadium and our softball stadium so we can continue to compete in those sports. We have donors that will help us with that, but they can't help us with that and also help us with NIL.

"We have this ONE Razorback theme, 'Only Need Everyone,' O-N-E. That's because we only need everyone across the state if they can contribute something to name, image and likenesses, we need them to go the Arkansas Edge website and do so and that's how we're going to be successful."

Football head coach Sam Pittman and other head coaches have been on the road with Yurachek, as has Calipari, who already seems to be laying groundwork with Stephens Inc. CEO Warren Stephens.

Calipari was also in Dallas on Monday for the Mavericks' game against the Oklahoma City Thunder to see former Kentucky Wildcats he coached, plus former Razorbacks Daniel Gafford for the Mavericks and Isaiah Joe and Jaylin Williams for the Thunder.

The Head Hog mentioned Tuesday evening to reporters that he also met with former Razorback and owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, while he was there.

Picture of LSU vs Arkansas O-Line

Do any of you remember the picture about 5-6 yrs ago comparing our o-line to the LSU o-line? If I remember correctly it was in the locker rooms with shirts off etc. Our guys didn’t look like football players and their guys were swollen, mean looking dudes. Laughed at that comparison many times and trying to find it to show some friends. Please share if you can find it.

Oregon State transfer pitcher visiting Arkansas

The Arkansas baseball program is hosting an intriguing portal arm on campus today, as Oregon State right-handed transfer pitcher Aiden Jimenez is visiting the Razorbacks according to his Instagram.

A 6-foot-3, 216-pound California native, Jimenez didn't play during the 2024 season due to a season-ending injury suffered in preseason camp. The now redshirt freshman was expected to compete for a starting spot in the Beavers' rotation.

As a freshman in 2023, Jimenez made 22 appearances with one start and tossed 38.0 innings. In that span, he accumulated a 5.68 ERA and a 5-2 win/loss record. Jimenez struck out 35 batters and walked only seven while holding hitters to a .283 batting average.

Jimenez' longest outing came against Sam Houston in the NCAA Tournament at the Baton Rouge Regional, where he threw six scoreless innings with six strikeouts while only allowing three hits.

During the offseason between the 2023 and 2024 campaigns, Jimenez played for the Chatham Anglers in the Cape Cod League, where he threw another 15.2 innings and held a lowly 1.15 ERA.

According to 64analytics, Jimenez is the 753rd-best transfer in the portal. The Razorbacks already hold commitments from BYU DH Kuhio Aloy, FGCU outfielder Charles Davalan, Milwaukee outfielder Carson Hansen, TCU outfielder Logan Maxwell and Georgia State shortstop Maximus Martin.

FB Recruiting Logan Schram sets commitment date

4-star OL Logan Schram just finished up an OV here last weekend and is announcing his decision Sunday.

It’s between Arkansas, TCU and Texas Tech. He took OV’s to the other two schools in April and May. I like the Hogs here but he’s also got a ton of connections to Texas Tech, who is the biggest threat.

John Daly said he doesn’t like Jeff Long

Good stuff from BOAS. Click on the link for the full story!

Part of Daly’s axe to grind stems from how he says Long treated two of his most prized possessions during Long’s time in charge on the Hill from 2008 through 2017. The story, as Daly recounted today on the Buzz 103.7 FM, begins with Daly’s donation of his trophies from the PGA Championship and the British Open to the athletic department.

They wound up on display at the Blessings Golf Club, the UA’s home golf course in Johnson, Ark. owned by John Tyson, the Arkansas Razorbacks booster who helped broker John Calipari’s arrival as Arkansas’ basketball coach.

Apparently, however, Long put the kibosh on continue to showcase the symbols of the two biggest tournaments ever won by a male Razorback golfer. Daly learned this when he requested they be sent to him for an upcoming interview.

Both trophies were found tossed in a closet, apparently at Long’s request, as Daly recalled on the “Morning Mayhem” show.

The top of the PGA Championship trophy was broken (Daly got it fixed) while the British Open trophy, which had been taken out of its case, got dented. “You feel that disrespect [at] what Jeff Long did,” Daly told co-hosts David Bazzel and Roger Scott. “He had no clue what those trophies meant to me.”

Dave Van Horn reacts to Texas hiring Jim Schlossnagle

CR2_2654.JPG

The talk of the sports world Tuesday revolved around former Texas A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle's controversial exit from the Aggies to take the head coach job with the rival Texas Longhorns.

Less than 24 hours after falling short of fellow Southeastern Conference opponent Tennessee in the College World Series final, Schlossnagle's move sparked plenty of discourse online, especially given comments he made following that loss to the Volunteers.

When asked postgame Monday night about being linked to the Texas job, which opened early Monday with the firing of former head coach David Pierce, Schlossnagle tore into TexAgs reporter Richard Zane, who asked the question.

"I think it's pretty selfish of you to ask me that question, to be honest with you," Schlossnagle said. "But I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again. And that hasn't changed my mind."

Schlossnagle even reportedly told Zane off camera to "never speak to him again." Schlossnagle issued an apology to Zane in his introductory press conference Wednesday in Austin.

Either way, Schlossnage is now at Texas, a program that will join the SEC for the 2025 college baseball season. Also a bitter rival to Arkansas, the Longhorns will now likely be a regular opponent for the Razorbacks and head coach Dave Van Horn.

Naturally, Van Horn was asked about Schlossnagle's move during Van Horn's first offseason media availability Wednesday. Van Horn alluded to Schlossnagle's relationship with Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte as something that played a role in Schlossnagle taking the Longhorns' job.

"We knew three weeks ago that Texas was going to let their coach go," Van Horn said. "Turmoil inside of their program. If you look at the wins and losses, it’s been pretty good getting to Omaha, been pretty good. Just been other problems. I think somebody was there that wanted somebody else, and there you go.

"Am I surprised? Not really. But then again, I am a little bit because of what was going to go on at A&M. They’d already made a lot of commitments to upgrade the stadium. Their fanbase is huge, passionate, they show up, they make a lot of noise, they make it really hard for you to win there, they have a lot of tradition. I don’t know."

Schlossnagle has been a head coach in the state of Texas since 2004, when he was hired to lead TCU's program. He left the Horned Frogs for the Aggies after the 2021 season, and he spent the last three seasons in College Station.

"There’s a lot of players, a lot of players to recruit right down the road in Houston, up the road in Dallas and over there and over there," Van Horn said. "I don’t know. I guess… I don’t know. Like I said, you can see me, I don’t know what to think about it. You can get involved in those situations that all you have to do is make a call or send a text, and next thing you know things are happening.

"It’s a tough situation when you jump from one school right down the road to another one. They don’t like each other in the first place. It’s going to be interesting in our coaches meetings. I don’t know who A&M is going to hire. I just know our league is really really good and when Texas comes in and OU comes in this year, it’s going to be even better."

Texas hiring Schlossnagle will not only cause a ripple effect in the coaching world, but the transfer portal will also get more interest. HawgBeat provides unmatched coverage of Arkansas baseball's roster movement, so stay tuned to The Trough premium message board.

Three-star defensive end Trent Sellers commits to Arkansas

From @DanielFair

Arkansas defensive line coach Deke Adams has reeled in another commitment for his unit, as three-star defensive end Trent Sellers announced his pledge to the Razorbacks on Sunday evening.

Sellers was one of several recruits on hand for an official visit in Fayetteville, which helped him make up his mind to join the Razorbacks’ class.

Arkansas was one of several SEC teams working to gain the Mobile, Alabama, native’s commitment. He chose the Razorbacks over offers from Mississippi State and Ole Miss, as well as Nebraska and many others.

With Sellers’ commitment, Arkansas is now up to 15 total in the class and the fourth defensive lineman to join the fold.

For Faith Academy in Mobile last season, Sellers made 69 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss and five sacks.

Baseball Georgia State transfer shortstop Maximus Martin commits to Arkansas

The Arkansas baseball team has added its four transfer portal addition of the offseason, as Georgia State shortstop Maximus Martin announced his commitment to the Razorbacks on Wednesday.

A 6-foot-1, 185-pound soon-to-be junior, Martin finished the 2024 with a slashline of .297/.430/.458 with 46 hits, 12 doubles, two triples and three home runs. He added 21 RBIs and also stole six bases.

Prior to his time at Georgia State, Martin played for Rutgers as a freshman in 2023. The New Jersey native made 59 at-bats and finished with a .203 batting average, two doubles and four home runs.

Martin was rated as the No. 82 overall player in the country in the class of 2022 and was the No. 16 overall shortstop.

RELATED: Arkansas Baseball 2024 Offseason Roster Tracker

According to 64analytics, Martin is ranked as the 209th best player in the transfer portal. His highlight season performance came against Southern Miss, when he finished 4-for-5 (.800) at the plate with two doubles, a triple and an RBI.

Arkansas has already received three commitments in the transfer portal in BYU two-way player Kuhio Aloy, Florida Gulf Coast outfielder Charles Davalan and Milwaukee outfielder Carson Hansen, but Razorbacks will still be busy adding more prospects over the coming weeks.
