OT 100% NOT the Official Off-Topic/Politics/Corona Thread

i mean, maybe in the definition of “biases” I’m guilty of one, but it has nothing to do with anecdotal data. You can surely admit that, right?
No, I can’t. Maybe this is where we deviate. Anecdotal evidence, can 100% be accurate. Obviously, there is an increase in incidents. I’m not denying that. My entire premise was based upon you pointing to the state weather map and saying, “look rain clouds have gone up. Aren’t you worried about going outside if it’s raining?” Then I countered with, the rain clouds are just over ****ing Washington county and more specifically chicken farms...that doesn’t mean it’s going to rain in Texarkansas because Texas Roadhouse is allowing 50% occupancy.

You’ve overgeneralized here. Anecdotal evidence means I am generalizing to the whole what I’ve personally experienced (ie it’s raining at my house and since you’re in the same region it must be raining at your house). I haven’t verified that it rained at your house, or at your next door neighbor’s house or at my next door neighbor’s house. I am simply assuming that my direct observation (rain) applies to every susceptible individual (people in my immediate are). This could certainly be true but it may be a statistical anomaly (ie it may be sunny and clear at my neighbor’s house).

Again, if I were guilty of providing anecdotal evidence to support whatever opinion I might have, my statement would have been “I have seen xx number of covid 19 cases at my clinic in Fayetteville so cases must be on the rise”. That may be a true statement, but it’s also possible that what I have PERSONALLY seen is not representative of the population as a whole. I really can’t fathom that I am having to explain this.

And honestly @jdr0269 I am happy to discuss this over PMs or in person if you prefer. Happy to PM you my cell if you’d prefer. Although this thread is a GD quagmire, I would rather not further clog it up with semantics. Hell, I’d love to meet you for a (socially distanced) beer and chat. My treat.

Naw, I got no beef with JDR. We’re just missing each other’s point on a topic and the limitations of message board discussions are the rate limiting factor.

I’m happy to buy the man a beer (or let him buy me one, or both times 5 or 6) and chat.

And I only drink Busch Light so his tab will be like $5.

And yet somehow today in Arkansas we have 314 new cases, 26 new hospitalizations, and 11 new patients on the vent. And given that a large percentage of nursing home patients have "do not resuscitate" orders, it would be hard to think that many of those 11 new ventilated patients are nursing home residents. 127 new cases are from my neck of the woods - Washington and Benton counties. If those cases aren't spreading from asymptomatic carriers, 314 people were cool hanging out w/ coughing/febrile folks I guess.

Then I guess this graph of new cases is comforting to you?

Seems like you are providing evidence to continue to be worried and that opening up the economy was directly correlated to the increase in cases.

From my perspective, which doesn't mean crap, I could care less about the increases in number of cases. More testing should result in more cases and in the case of NWA it seems to be attributed to the poultry industry. IF 80% are asymptomatic and IF it is true that it is rare they are spreading the virus I care less about a spike in those cases, just like I could care less if you got the flu and recovered or didn't feel all that bad. I'd be concerned about the number of REAL deaths caused by Covid not the bullshit cases have having stage 4 cancer, terminal, and died with COVID.

I guess we will see within the next month is there is a huge spike in cases after all these protest where people are stack asses to elbows and screaming...

The more important number to watch (that isn’t directly tied to increased testing) is hospitalizations. And no, I have said before that I am in favor of a controlled and phased reopening of commerce. It had to be done. I think Arkansas has done it pretty well. I am just continuing to keep an eye on numbers, mostly for the sake of my family and my patients. I’ve long given up on trying to change other people’s minds!!

I would agree about hospitalizations but specifically recovery vs death.

Read an article they other day, that the response and treatment by the medical community has adapted as time has gone along for the better and the opinion was this could be one factor in less deaths if there were a second wave. Do you and/or your colleagues agree?

Yes, I think this is rather accurate. I think we've learned a lot about how to manage ventilator settings, prevent vascular events like strokes, and manage fluids to prevent fluid overload in the lungs while keeping the kidneys well perfused. I think we've also learned some of the laboratory warning signs that indicate pending respiratory failure and are intubating before patients absolutely crash. Then we also have some of the newer medications like remdesivir and anakinra that have shown significant promise. So yes, we are more knowledgeable and better able to manage this than we were in March.

I think this claim has legs HP. The dude has a blog and has timestamped each time he's gotten arrested at protests and gotten off without prosecution.

Being arrested at a protest doesn’t mean you were being violent at a protest.
