OT 100% NOT the Official Off-Topic/Politics/Corona Thread

Board of trustees decides soon (today?) if masks will be mandated all over campus or if we are going “local government” and leaving it up to departments and even individual instructors to decide. My understanding is that the board is concerned with how mandatory masks impacts football.

The chancellor is on board with mandatory masks. We will see.

I'm not sure what the point of letting individual departments decide. Either everyone does it, or no one does IMO. What point does it make if only certain people wear them?

Just make them mandatory unless you're doing physical activity.

No one really wants to take responsibility for the decision. If the university itself doesn’t mandate and enforce, nothing else will matter. Half measures don’t work. Just ask Texas.

Have a friend at the UA that thinks students will be on campus until Thanksgiving then finish the semester out online so that football can be played.

At that point the cake been baked, why not just finish the last 2 or 3 weeks on campus.

He said the NCAA had come out and originally stated they don't support on campus sports without regular students on campus so that's his thought process. NCAA could come out and say different now too and make it moot.

It’s not official, but it’s not a secret that classes will go full remote after thanksgiving. Sending everyone home to multiple states and cities and then bringing them back isn’t seen as smart policy right now. There will also be no Monday and Tuesday classes before thanksgiving either. So the Friday before will be when everyone leaves.

Was the the reasoning for canceling fall break and merging it with Thanksgiving in a way?

Hadn't even crossed my mind but makes sense

So basketball is doomed?

There really is no perfect solution unfortunately. The safest thing would obviously be no football. With colleges and the NCAA wanting to take in their usual millions on millions and more than 50% of the fans backing them who could give a rat's you know what about the safety of players, coaches, teachers etc. Who just want their football back.......it is going to be a massive outcry either way. This is America so they will surely err on the side of capitalism instead of taking the safest approach without a doubt.

Will you protest the viewing of sports if they are played this year?

If football isn't played, it's more than just NCAA taking in millions. Thousands will be out of a job. Programs will shut down. Websites like this one will be in jeopardy. I know I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. We all need to be praying for sports to be played, as safely as possible.

Are millions not out of jobs already?

Seeing that there is a real likelihood that fans might not be in attendance most of the jobs I assume you are referring to would be lost in that case.

I'd prefer that. Remote learning isn't learning. Remote teaching isn't teaching. Not when its done like we did it in the spring. Online teaching requires you to either A) totally not give a damn about your students or B) an acquired skill set over time. Most of us don't fall in either category. Truncated semester in person is preferable if anyone is asking me (spoiler: they are not).

Think I heard on the radio that Tuscaloosa was looking at around 200 million in lost money if no fans could attend games. You think about hotels, restaurants, shops, vendors in the stadium. The lost tax money the city would miss out on to fund their budget for the year. They're so much in play that you don't really think about.

I am too, you seem to be pretty adamant on the NCAA not pushing for fall sports this year. What if Texas opens up High School sports, will you continue to coach?

I will reserve comment on anything relating to Texas until an official decision comes from UIL. I will say that I don't see how they will be cleared to play. They've already said no to fall camps in the area. Our Governor has already done the people a disservice so that mess is still being cleaned up.

If football season is played, the majority of schools won't have to shut down other sports programs. Obviously some jobs will be impacted with no fans in attendance, but the overall situation will be salvageable with a season being played.

I don't think football has to be an all or nothing if the decision is made to keep moving forward. If a stadium holds 100k, drop it to 35k and spread them out. We did that voluntarily last year -- it can work.

Imagine how smart it would have looked now if that stadium renovation had ripped out all the bleachers, reduced capacity, and went luxury instead.

The economy is just now starting to get back moving..lots of businesses can’t handle something like this happening.

Can you imagine how much advertising on TV is going to cost this season?

Lol Arkansas has done that the past 4yrs at least. I would be interested in seeing how that is regulated.

What a cop out. You can disavow everything the NCAA/college coaches are doing but can't give us a straight answer on what you'd personally do in their shoes. Are the coaches just as at fault here because they are going along with it? Should they take off this year?

Cop out? Man please. The NCAA is taking steps towards playing while high school here is allowing voluntary workouts and already canceled fall camps. Not even close to the same thing. Again.....the NCAA is gearing up to play. But in your eyes it is a cop out for me to want to wait on something official from Texas (since they've made no official decision either way) before I give a concrete opinion on it. Whatever you say man. You got it.

And you brought up the entire population as if they had all been tested. It was a totally irrelevant mention. Try staying on topic yourself.
huh? Dying from it is totally irrelevant to people getting tested. When I say 5 have died from over 3 million people, that had nothing to do with testing or how many got tested. It doesn't matter. Which is why I'm not sure why you keep bringing up testing.

Lol still nothing being said from you. If Texas says "we are having a 2020 season", are you coaching?

Are you apart of the voluntary workouts currently being held while the positive cases are booming?
