The Razorbacks are now halfway through with spring ball and the guys are taking a well-deserved break until next Tuesday. The players can go wherever they please for this shortened spring break, Pittman just wants to make sure they come back and stay safe.
Practice seven took place under cloudy conditions with a slight wind chill but it stayed dry enough to keep the practice outdoors and open to the media (for the first 8 periods).
The Hogs started off with individual drills all over the field. I was in my spot next to the defensive linemen with the DBs across the field. Clips of those drills are in
here.
Jalen Catalon made his return to practice and his reps were as good as you'd expect from a freshman all-sec player despite the time off the field. He had a great rep in one-on-one coverage on Treylon Burks who, after dropping the pass, had to do pushups (on his 21st birthday by the way, happy birthday TreyBob). Catalon read the route assigned to Burks by Briles well. He was also one of the first successful DBs in a drill the Hogs did on the goal line.
The DB/WR pairs would go one by one, allowing Coach Carter to yell plenty of helpful tips at his DBs after each rep. The point stressed in the drill was to hold ground on the goal line, stay square and ready to come up for the play. Carter is consistent in his energy level, it's clear why the DBs as a whole have taken a big step forward. Trey Knox went first in the drill and beat his man to the corner for a grab, landing pretty hard.
One of the first DB v WR drills they did was to work on the defensive back's ability to shed their block and get inside leverage. Going one by one, the whole group was bringing energy to each mini competition. Analysts and grad assistants provided encouragement or notes after the reps.
A couple youngsters got reps with the first team defense in today's early live session. Eric Thomas Jr. and Jashaud Stewart were lined up on either end of Eric Gregory. During the twos portion, Rocket Sanders got the handoffs from Malik Hornsby.
During a special teams segment, new TEs coach Cody Kennedy was working with the punting unit to shore up their knowledge of the blocking scheme and the proper hand signal communication for what they're seeing across the line. Nothing to do with his coaching but Kennedy has some ridiculous calves.
I mentioned it in the highlight thread but the Hogs may make their April 3 scrimmage open to fans so make plans accordingly.
