Football Latest on the Georgia QB Battle

From UGA Rivals:
“ First and foremost, no, I do not know who is going to be the starting quarterback. If you follow the tea leaves, yes, D’Wan Mathis would seem to be picking up a lot of steam.

We know Mathis has received reps with the first team in all three of Georgia’s scrimmages, including the predominant amount of time this past Saturday at Sanford Stadium.

From everything we’ve been told, Mathis throws a great ball, is definitely a threat with his legs, and based on what Todd Monken recently told the media, is able to be used in similar fashion to the way the Bulldogs planned on using Newman before his decision to leave the team.

The trouble is, Mathis is still young. Redshirt freshmen can certainly be counted on to make their share of mistakes. Turnovers, especially by your quarterback, are one of Smart's deadly sins.

For those wondering about true freshman Carson Beck, the same fears would apply.

Which brings us to JT Daniels.

In trying to figure out this puzzle, Monken told reporters that the transfer from Southern Cal was actually a better athlete than many might give him credit for.

The question is, what about now?

We will be talking to Smart later this afternoon, and as of our last conversation with Kirby, Daniels was still not cleared for contact, i.e., ready to be tackled in an actual game.

Although Smart said recently that he expected Daniels would be cleared in time for the opener, reports of the redshirt sophomore “limping” during Saturday’s scrimmage have given many pause for concern.

If Daniels is truly still bothered by the knee that was operated on a year ago, the decision to start Mathis will be automatic.

But what if … bear with me now … this is all some sort of elaborate ruse by Smart and his offensive coaches.

By now you have probably heard the running joke, paraphrasing here, that Kirby Smart “plays chess when other people are playing checkers.” Well, this would certainly qualify.

One thing about the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic that I assure everyone Smart doesn’t mind is it’s given him the perfect opportunity to keep the media away from the football facilities. That would certainly make it a lot easier to practice a little gamesmanship in regards to the Razorbacks and first-year head coach Sam Pittman.

That seems unlikely this close o the season opener though.

However, if Daniels’ mobility is truly an issue, it is going to be curious to see what happens.

Daniels’ arm strength has been compared to that of Matt Stafford, but if he is basically a statue in the pocket, what does Monken do?

Georgia’s new offensive coordinator has made it clear that in a perfect world, having a quarterback with at least some mobility is important for his offense. If Daniels is cleared but still on the gimpy side, does Monken go with the healthier choice in Mathis?

Just based on what we have been able to glean, that seems to be where we sit today-again, assuming this is not some sort of ploy by the Bulldogs to keep everyone off guard until kickoff on the 26th.

Either way, we will know the answer soon.”

OT Bud Walton as early voting location

County Elections Commission just voted to make Bud Walton an early voting location. This is the first time this has happened. Student government -- I'm told -- has pushed for several years to make the campus a voting location but has always been denied. They are using early voting as a test case for doing that in the future. If you are early voting and want to do it at Bud Walton, there won't be a parking pass or mask (per state rules) required.

Arkansas has an advantage at every home game this year.

Seems like a lot of schools are struggling with energy right now and playing flat. Schools like Florida, Auburn, A&M, etc are used to playing in front of 80k fans.

we are used to only having 15k, so home games for us will be pretty normal this year.

Advantage us. They will come out flat at home and we beat them all 12-0 Natty Champs here we come.
